Now, Cower before me!
~ Dokurobei tells to Doronbo to cower them to telling the mission or whenever they failing this mission

Dokurobei is one of two main antagonists (alongside Doronjo) of the anime series Yatterman and its 2008 remake, as well as the main antagonist of Yatterman Night.

He is the benefactor of the Doronbo Gang and an unseen being who gives orders to Doronjo, Boyacky and Tonzura through speakers in various objects. He assembled the Doronbo Gang for the purpose of obtaining the four Skull Stones, which he promised them would lead them to the greatest treasure in the world. He is prone to zapping the Doronbo Gang when they fail or complain about his information being inaccurate.

At the end of the series, he finally appears in person as a short, squat and ugly man, but this is revealed to be a decoy for his true form, the Skull Stone itself.

In the original and remake, he was voiced by the late Junpei Takiguchi, who also voiced Count Brocken in Mazinger Z and Dr. Jango Tarantino in The Brave of Sun Fighbird. In Yatterman Night, he was voiced by Hori.

Appearance[]

Dokurobei's human form resembles a short fat man in the original and remake series. He looks like a short, portly man with purple glasses and a long handlebar mustache, balding with tuffs of hair on the sides and a little skull on his forehead. He also wears a purple shirt and skirt, dark purple gloves, boots, and cape, and either tan coloured pants or no pants on at all.

In the remake he looks the same as the original, with his long handlebar mustache, balding with tuffs of hair on the sides and a little skull on his forehead, but his hair is pink, his glasses are red, his cape is green and his shirt and skirt are blue.

In Yatterman Night, In a flashback his original human form was like in the original, but his new form resembles a tall slim man. His mustache now goes down his face (or it’s part of a mask), the glasses have been traded in for a monocle, and he now has grey hair with a patch of black sticking out, although the tuffs remain intact. His clothes and robes are red and black, he has white gloves, and he wears a belt with a skull.

And since Dokurobei's true form is the Skull Stone, he is a skull made of black stone with red eyes, and the same as the remake series and Yatterman Night.

Personality[]

Dokurobei gives orders to the Doronjo Gang in unusual ways, such as through a hamburger or screen. Even when he is proven wrong, he still punishes the gang first. For all his talk about how they often fail him, he proves himself to be no better than them and isn't above comical moments at times. It's ultimately revealed that he has deceived them all along and has no intention of giving them any treasure, as his goal is just to put himself back together so he can return home.

Dokurobei's personality varies between adaptations. In the classic series, he is just a standard supervillain of the time. In the remake, he shows genuine love for his grandson and is implied to return to Earth to hang out with the Doronjo Gang, having grown fonding of them. In Yatterman Night, he is depicted as a sadist who will stop at nothing to remain the ruler of Earth. And since in Yatterman Night, both the original series and the 2008 remake happened, it is implied that he has grown out of his comedic tactics and care for Dokubon, as well as his fondness for the Doronbo Gang.

Biography[]

Yatterman[]

Dokurobei assembled the Doronjo Gang for the purpose of gathering the four Skull Stones, which he told them would lead them to the greatest treasure in the whole world. Typically, he would give a lead to the Doronbo Gang each episode as to where a Skull Stone was, that would often turn out to be inaccurate, and zap them whenever they failed to obtain a Skull Stone, failed against Yatterman, or if they complained about his leads being wrong. Even when the gang successfully obtained a Skull Stone, Dokurobei still chose to zap them so as not to deprive the audience of the gang's weekly punishment.

In the final episode, the Doronbo Gang successfully obtain all four Skull Stones. However, it's at that point that the complete Skull Stone is revealed to be the true form of Dokurobei, who deceived the Doronbo Gang into collecting all of them.

Dokurobei revealed that he was actually an alien from the Dokuro planet, renamed Planet XYZ, who had visited the Earth when it was nothing more than a ball of magma. The extreme heat splitted his body into four pieces, and he had spent eons trying to put himself back together. With his true form was complete, Dokurobei departed from the Earth and left his former henchmen with nothing.

Time Bokan: Royal Revival[]

Dokurobei is the main antagonist of the Time Bokan: Royal Revival OVA. He first appears at the end of the first episode, congratulating the Doronbo Gang for winning the race only to then "reward" them with a trip to a lava pit so that they can train for the next episode.

In the second episode, Dokurobei poses as Togurobei and sends the Doronbo Gang to the Tatsunoko Kingdom in order to retrieve the Tonguro Stone. When they complete the mission, he once again punishes them by unleashing Matatabinga so as to once again satisfy the audience.

Yatterman (2008)[]

Dokurobei serves as a similar role in the 2008 remake, where he recruits the Doronbo Gang to steal the five Skull Rings and tells them that they will grant them any wish once they're all assembled. In his first message to the gang, he also introduces himself as a "God of Thieves". Dokurobei also has a grandson named Dokubon.

At the end of the anime, it's revealed that the Skull Rings were really objects that were planted recently by Dokurobei, and that he had sent them on a wild goose chase for his own entertainment to suck out the hopes and dreams (or hearts) of every single being on Earth to become unstoppable. Barely able to hold on, Gan-chan manages to feed Yatter-King a Mecha-Moto, which enables him to produce mecha scapbooks of past events. Emotionally touched by the memories, along with the scrapbooks causing Dokubon to miss his mother (Dokurobei's daughter), Dokurobei decides to stop his attack and return to XYZ peacefully, but he vows that he will return.

However, not long afterwards he comes back to Earth, claiming that there are actually 50 Dokuro Rings to be found, although it’s implied to be an excuse to hang around and have more fun with the Doronbo gang.

Yatterman Night[]

Dokurobei's new human form in Yatterman Night

Dokurobei's new appearance in Yatterman Night.

In this series, it was revealed that both the original Yatterman and the 2008 remake happened as a result of Dokurobei returning from Planet XYZ to Earth to get revenge on the Yatterman gang. After the Doronbo Gang's mutiple failures to do so, he did it himself and succeeded, conquered Earth under the identity of "Lord Yatterman" in order to get revenge on the Yatterman gang for getting in the way of his quest to obtain the Skull Stones by disgracing their name. He established the tyrannical Yatter Kingdom to rule over the planet, but was faced by a resistance formed by the descendants of the Doronbo Gang.

Leopard, Voltkatze, and Elephantus hold off the Yatter-Guardians while Galina and Alouette, taking up the mantle of Yatterman and onboard a newly built Yatter-Wan, proceed to fight Dokurobei, who grows to an immensely colossal size to fight them. After a long and tense struggle, the new Yatterman are able to strike down and destroyed Dokurobei, ending his chaos over Earth once and for all.
