Cummings: So, this is what you call a "baby"?
Boris Johnson: Uh, yes!
Cummings: It looks delicious. May I eat it?
Boris Johnson Haha! Jolly good! Uh, 'fraid not, Carrie would be furious.
~ Cummings requesting to eat Boris Johnson's baby.

Dominic Mckenzie Cummings is a supporting antagonist in the ITV revival of Spitting Image.

He was a government advisor to Boris Johnson, whose aim was to orchestrate an invasion in the UK on behalf of his alien race.

He was voiced by Daniel Barker.

Physical appearance[]

Cummings' puppet was given an exaggeratedly large forehead, and detached eyes. He was often seen wearing a sinister, alien-like cloak. When thinking, his head pulsates.

Personality[]

Cummings demonstrated an intention to control the UK population, and was a skilled manipulator to the politicians he worked with. He was able to evade being held accountable for his plans through having his subjects become dependent on him for his ability to create political spin. He fails to understand some basic human functions, such as how to eat.

Biography[]

Background[]

Cummings is supposedly an alien from Epsilon 5, a fictional planet. He was appointed as a government advisor to assist in the Brexit campaign which, after its success, brought Cummings a lot of reputation. He became a senior advisor to Boris Johnson as a spin doctor, and was widely viewed by the British public to be a strong voice of authority over government action.

Spitting Image[]

Cummings is introduced as an alien (which goes unnoticed by the government) who seeks to wreak mayhem by implementing destructive policies to weaken the British public and invade on behalf of his race. Cummings is seen first having written a speech for Prime Minister Boris Johnson, which Johnson criticises for being too "harsh." The speech itself declares the working class should sacrifice themselves for "the good of the hive".

Cummings provokes Johnson, and questions if he will be fired. Johnson says it will not be necessary, but Cummings' reaction reveals that he has indomitable power over Johnson and cannot be sacked. Cummings then sees Johnson's new-born baby, and asks if he may eat it. Johnson declines, claiming his partner would be "furious" if Cummings did.

Cummings' speech becomes increasingly sinister and eugenic, which Johnson further criticises. Cummings becomes defensive again and reminds Johnson the reason he has Cummings around is to protect him. Cummings once again asks to consume Johnson's baby, but is again told no. Cummings' scandal during the pandemic where he was seen flouting rules by making a long-distance travel to get an eye test (which is widely disbelieved by the British public) is revealed to be so that Cummings could shed his exoskeleton.

Cummings is nominated to engage in negotiations with the North of England by Boris, and to gain intelligence on the North, he absorbs Johnson's knowledge through placing his finger in his ear. This results in Cummings demonstrating classist stereotypes about Northerners, which results in the Northern negotiators taking offence.

At a curry house with Michael Gove, Cummings is asked by Gove to have his support to unseat Johnson. Gove learns Cummings is an alien, and the pair realise their similarities in having no empathy and a pessimistic view of society. Gove poisons Cummings with turmeric (toxic to Cummings' race).

On Bonfire Night, Cummings learns of the history of Guy Fawkes, and takes inspiration from him to blow up Parliament. Cummings asks if he were to do the same, what the consequences would be. Johnson reveals he would not even fire him. Later, after private messages between Johnson and Cummings are leaked that ridicule Johnson's wife, Carrie, he is fired. Cummings objects and reveals how he has been the one responsible for protecting Johnson. Johnson explains he cannot keep Cummings around, and must leave government. Cummings submits, and attempts to kidnap Johnson's baby to eat it on the way back home, but is ultimately stopped. Cummings arrives at the station, where he is believed to be returning to his home planet, but it is revealed Cummings is truly from Durham, and had been human all along.
