~ Don Sal to The Gang.

Don Sal is an antagonist in the third season of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, serving as the main antagonist of the two-part episode "The Gang Gets Whacked".

He is a mob boss of the Philadelphia Crime Family, also known as Philly Family. They are a dangerous gangsters that are involved in a drug trade.

He was portrayed by Joe Cortese.

Biography[]

The gang gets involved with the mob after Charlie and Dee come across a pair of speakers that had cocaine hid in them fell out back of their truck. After the gang ditch Mac because of his ego, he joins the mob so he can call off their hit on him and the gang.

While Mac is cleaning the urinals told by the mobsters, he sees Don Sal coming out of the stall, who mistakes Mac of being the janitor. He tells that he's not being utilized properly and wants to do some "mobster s-it". Sal asks him to do a personal favor for him, having him go over his house and take care of his wife. Mac asks if he wants him to rub her out and have sex with her, Sal tells it's nothing like that. The scene then cuts to Mac cleaning out Sal's house gutters.

Inside of the house, Dennis is dancing for Don Sal's wife, a hugely obese woman. When Mac notices this, he approaches him and requests to speak with him. Dennis, who appears to be brainwashed, tells Mac that "you have to take yourself out of the situation." Frank rushes in, attempting to drive Mac away. Mac tells Dennis that he doesn't have to and shouldn't because she's the mob boss's wife, but Frank insists that he does. Mac and Frank started to smack Dennis around, who starts to think what to do. The wife comes down stairs and demanded Dennis to comeback to her room, but refuses and leaves.

While the gang Mac and Frank meets up with Charlie and Dee in the bar, Don Sal and his mobsters show up, asking for their money or their drugs. Frank, Dee, and Charlie pulls out their guns and the mobster pulled theirs, starting a standoff. Dennis shows up with the twenty-five thousand dollars, However, Sal's phone rings and answers it. He is very upset and tells Mac that his wife explained to him that one of the latter's friends tried to force himself on her. When Mac says he has no idea, Sal concludes it was him, but Ricky Cricket shouts "I did it, and I made it so sexy!" while working on his musical. The Gang pins the blame on him and the mobsters carrying him out to break his legs.

Trivia[]

  • Based on the time that the episode "The Gang Gets Whacked" aired (November 1, 2007), it is heavily implied that Dom Sal was based on Joseph "Skinny Joey" Merlino, a notorious Italian-American Mafia boss who was the boss of the Philadelphia crime family from 1999 to 2024.
    • Merlino was first the underboss of the Philadelphia crime family from 1995 to 1999 (during the rule of Ralph Natale, the boss of the Philadelphia crime family at the time) and then the boss of the Philadelphia crime family from 1999 to 2024 (after the arrest of Ralph Natale), thus becoming the second longest-serving Mafia boss of the Philadelphia crime family (behind only the legendary Angelo "The Gentle Don" Bruno, who was the boss of the Philadelphia crime family from 1959 to 1980).
  • Dom Sal is considered the most serious, ruthless and dangerous antagonist of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, since in his eagerness to recover the drug cargo (and consequently the money from these drugs) that was stolen by the gang, he threatened to kill the five protagonists of the series (suggesting causing a possible massacre).
