Biography[]
Early life[]
Donald Anderson, born on November 11, 1939, in Nashville, Tennessee, possessed a deep familiarity with weaponry and advanced technology. His remarkable skills caught the attention of Major Zero, who, recognizing his talents, recruited Anderson into the CIA. This opportunity came at a time when racial discrimination made it challenging for Anderson to secure employment elsewhere. However, Anderson's recruitment stirred controversy among his peers, leading to frequent complaints directed at Major Zero, who had to handle these issues approximately three days each month. At some point, Anderson had a close friendship with Jim Houseman.
One notable achievement in Anderson's career was the invention of the Raikov mask, initially developed for a CIA-sponsored mission. The mission involved an agent infiltrating the Soviet Union, assuming the identity of a GRU officer, and infiltrating a classified Soviet facility to acquire sensitive documents. Although the mission was eventually aborted, Major Zero instructed Anderson to discard the mask. Nevertheless, Anderson hesitated, considering it a remarkable invention, being the first mask to incorporate a "blinking" feature. He regarded disposing of it as an affront to science, even though he believed achieving lifelike lip movement was a challenge for anyone.
Operation Snake Eater[]
As a FOX operative, was bestowed with the codename "Mr. Sigint," a nod to the military term "SIGINT" (which stands for Signal Intelligence). While not directly involved in the August 1964 Virtuous Mission, Mr. Sigint provided Major Zero with valuable notes on various technologies, including the anti-personnel sensor, motion detector, and active sonar.
A week following, Sigint was officially meets Naked Snake during the beginning of Operation Snake Eater, with information on every weaponry, machinery, camouflage, gadgetry, and many others. Among his inventions were the active sonar and motion detector, both of which proved invaluable for Snake's mission. Sigint also provided tactics against the Spetsnaz and Cobra Unit, including the latter’s microbombs. Following Snake's encounter with The Sorrow, Sigint reveals that the former Cobra had, in fact, died two years prior in Tselinoyarsk while confronting The Boss. As Snake embarked on his mission to destroy the Shagohod at Groznyj Grad, Sigint later provided advice of C3 explosives to him.
After the success of Operation Snake Eater, Sigint was present at Snake's award ceremony held at Langley. During this ceremony, Snake was bestowed with the Distinguished Service Cross by President Lyndon B. Johnson, along with the title "Big Boss". Sigint couldn't help but show his concern as Snake left the room without uttering a single word.
Post-Snake Eater[]
In the year 1965, Sigint enlisted with ARPA and played a pivotal role in the development of ARPAnet. Between 1965 to 1970, Sigint found himself engaged in two notable projects. The first of these projects, codenamed "Metabolism Dominance," aimed to train soldiers to complete missions without consuming any sleep or eating for five days, as well as other projects relating to GPS satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles, the creation of a specialized human cannon designed for launching Special Forces operatives atop buildings, and the development of an aircraft with an uncanny resemblance to a UFO.
San Hieronymo Incident[]
In November of 1970, Sigint received a communication from Naked Snake while stationed at ARPA. This unexpected message arrived shortly after Snake's escape from imprisonment at the hands of the now-rebellious FOX Unit, after a takeover on the San Hieronymo Peninsula. With Major Zero facing charges of treason due to the unit's mutiny, Sigint told Snake that he and Para-Medic might face court-martial proceedings unless Snake could prove their innocence in connection with the treason charges against him. In a strategic move, Sigint also advised Snake to assemble a group of allies to support his cause. As their conversation unfolded, Sigint disclosed that their contact with a Green Berets squad dispatched to the peninsula had been severed, urging Snake to seek their assistance if he came across them. Unbeknownst to Sigint, Snake had already encountered the last surviving member of the Green Berets within the prison.
After their successful mission, Sigint, alongside Para-Medic and Zero, warmly welcomed Snake on an airport runway upon his return to the United States. All three had been cleared of the charges of treason, marking a triumphant reunion on American soil.
Founding The Patriots[]
Anderson, alongside Dr. Clark, Big Boss, Ocelot, and EVA, were recruited by Zero to become the founding members of an organization that would eventually come to be known as Cipher. Anderson used ARPAnet, the precursor to the modern Internet, to orchestrate the group's grand design for virtual global dominance over the world. It was under the subtle guidance of ARPA itself that many of their ambitious developmental plans took shape, as they embarked on their path towards shaping the world's future.
In the late part of 1974, Anderson believed that artificial intelligence should lead over humanity, deeming it superior to the AI weapons conceived for Hot Coldman's Peace Walker Project. Following a devastating bio-weapon attack by the rogue subordinate Skull Face that left Zero incapacitated, Anderson was entrusted with the leadership of Cipher. Yet, for a period, Skull Face managed to control of Cipher away from Anderson. It wasn't until the mercenary group Diamond Dogs, led by Venom Snake, intervened and ultimately led to Skull Face's demise that Anderson was able to regain control of Cipher.
In the early months of 1984, Anderson successfully realized his brainchild: an advanced AI network programmed to maintain the "norms" mandated by Zero. This network was intended to serve as the successors known as the Patriots. Despite Zero's initial insistence that these AIs should lack thinking capabilities, due to the near-disastrous events of the Peace Walker Incident involving AI, Anderson ultimately was forced to allow them with the capacity to think and learn for themselves. He provided them with instructions to follow. Specifically, Strangelove, the woman initially entrusted with the task of developing the AIs, had passed away before incorporating certain traits, like compassion, into the AIs. This would lead to in unforeseen consequences in the future.
Metal Gear REX[]
In 2002, Anderson assumed the role of Chief at DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). He firmly supported the nuclear retaliation theory and, having received bribes from Kenneth Baker, he provided funding for the Metal Gear REX project. This collaboration involved a joint effort with ArmsTech, financed using a portion of the Pentagon's covert budget. Over the course of several years, the payments in the tens of thousands of dollars were funneled into the bank account of a dummy company, with the DARPA Chief's wife acting as a consultant for this operation. The development of REX was also motivated by the need to counteract a global trend of military downsizing.
Shadow Moses Incident[]
In February 2005, Anderson and Baker made a visit to Shadow Moses Island, where they witnessed Metal Gear REX's rail gun testing exercise. Their purpose was to deliver the exercise data to the U.S. Secretary of Defense. However, their plans were foiled when they were taken hostage during a rebellion instigated by FOXHOUND. Anderson's cranial implants proved to be a formidable defense against Psycho Mantis' mind-reading abilities during the subsequent interrogation. Anderson refused to divulge the detonation codes for REX, thanks in part to his reinforced mental defenses through hypnotherapy. Tragically, Anderson met his demise during a "botched" torture session orchestrated by Revolver Ocelot. This unfortunate incident was later framed as an accident, concealing the fact that FOXHOUND was deprived of access to his code.
Consequently, under the orders of FOXHOUND commander Liquid Snake, Decoy Octopus disguised himself as Anderson, aiming to deceive Solid Snake into divulging an alternative means of activating Metal Gear REX. It wasn't until later, during Snake's captivity orchestrated by Ocelot, that he stumbled upon Anderson's corpse. However, the ruse of the switch was not revealed to Snake until Vulcan Raven disclosed the truth. Anderson, having enjoyed a personal friendship with Jim Houseman, was the sole reason that the Secretary of Defense had intended to rescue. Following the uprising, reports circulated to Solidus Snake suggesting that the DARPA Chief had been purposefully killed due to his knowledge of Ocelot's true identity and underlying motives.
