Dottie Quinn is a supporting antagonist in the Netflix TV show You, serving as a minor antagonist in Season 2, a major antagonist in Season 3, and a minor character in Season 5.

She is a manipulative abuser who is responsible for the upbringing of her serial killer daughter Love, and her drug addicted son Forty. She is the Matriarch of the filthy rich Quinn family dynasty who are based in Los Angeles, California.

She was portrayed by Saffron Burrows, who also portrayed The Witch's possession of Catherine in Baghead.

Biography[]

She is first introduced as Love and Forty's abusive mother. While she is outwardly awful and demeaning towards Love, even slapping her on one occasion, she is kind and welcoming to Forty. When Forty and Love were young, Forty was repeatedly sexually assaulted by an au pair, known as Sofia. Love had killed her in order to protect him, and then made it seem like Forty was the one whom committed the act. Dottie, unwilling to let her son take the fall for Sofia's death, used her exorbitant wealth to cover up Sofia's death, by making it look like a suicide, and paying "fixers" to clean up the fallout. When that did not suffice, Dottie simply resorted to bribing the authorities, resulting in Love getting off scot-free.

Years later, Dottie lives an extremely fashionable life, running the high-end grocery store, Anavrin. She along with her husband, Ray Quinn, not only endorse, but encourage Forty's outrageous attitudes, such as when Ray had sent in millions of dollars as a donation to Dartmouth in order to allow Forty to be admitted despite the fact his SAT scores were inadequate. She is introduced to Joe Goldberg via his recent paramour Love Quinn, and Dottie immediately comments on how she feels he is a great fit for Love. However, her true colours are soon revealed when she physically assaults Love. Her favouritism towards Forty exacerbates Love and her's hostile disposition towards each other. This is also further proven as Dottie, while not having proof, suspects Love for her husband James murder.

When Love Confronts her covering up Forty's "murder" of the au pair, and how she refused to have Sofia arrested or face proper judgement by court of law, Dottie refuses accountability, and gaslights Love, and dismisses her as a "Drama Queen". Her dismissive attitude of Love continues, as when Love calls on her and Ray in order to allow her access to a Private Investigator to keep tabs on Joe, she obliges. This is also in accordance when she allows Love to use her resources to allow Ellie to avoid suspicion of having been responsible for Henderson's murder.

In the finale, Dottie once again uses her vast wealth to prevent any accountability for her, her son, or her family's actions. When police look into Forty posthumously for his suspected role in Henderson's death, she uses her money to quote on quote "make any investigation radioactive" seeming as she wants to protect Forty's legacy, cementing her as an authoritative and ruthless figure, who is committed to holding up her family's reputation, and abandoning any semblance of authenticity.

In Season 3, Dottie follows Love and Joe to Madre Linda, much to Love's chagrin. Dottie and Love consider themselves to be "financially struggling" since Dottie chose to divorce Ray due to the fact that Ray was cheating. Dottie and Ray spend the entire season combatting each other's machinations in a spiteful divorce. Initially, Dottie is respectful to Joe and Love's wishes, and supports them in caretaking their son Henry. Love feels betrayal when Dottie personally befriends duplicitous gossipy neighbour Sherry, who was at odds with Love previously, and the two have a blowup fight, culminating in Dottie calling Love "ungrateful."

However, things change when Dottie begins to lose footing in her battle against her husband in their divorce, resulting in Dottie becoming financially crippled, and losing key assets such as Anavrin, however, the key loss was a vineyard that Dottie had apparently purchased on her own wealth. When Dottie lost the vineyard, her state of mind fractured, and she resorted to reckless substance abuse in an attempt to self-soothe, which mostly consisted of drinking. Dottie began to disturb Love with her tantrums, and deranged outbursts. While Love and Joe plan to attend a fundraiser, Dottie wants Love to allow her to watch over Forty. However, Love, disturbed by her, refuses. This prompts Dottie to kidnap Forty and take him on a ride to the vineyard, which Dottie sets ablaze the vineyard, prompting Love to immediately disown her. Dottie uses her last remaining funds to shield her from the consequences of her arson rampage.

While Dottie is about to be sent to Rehab, as a last spiteful gesture, she tells and confides in Joe that Love may or may not have been responsible for James's death, Love's late husband.

You Season 5[]

Dottie appears in a tiktok condemning Joe for his murders along with many others dog-piling him and accusing him of various atrocities. While on the app, she butts heads with Sherry and Cary, survivors of her serial killer daughter Love Quinn.
