~ Dou Niu threatening Ryo and Ren after they hurt Yuan.

Dou Niu (斗牛 Pinyin: Dòuniú, On'yomi: Togyū) is the main antagonist and the final boss of the adventure game Shenmue II by SEGA. He also appears as the secondary antagonist in the series' anime adaption Shenmue the Animation. He is the leader of a gang called the Yellow Heads that operates in Kowloon. His right-hand man is Yuan, who also is his boyfriend, which is speculated why he has such a high rank in the gang.

Although it is not said why, Dou Niu's gang has a rivalry with Wuying Ren's Heavens gang. Dou Niu also has connections with the Chi You Men and with Lan Di. Dou Niu's current goal is to find Yuanda Zhu and bring him to Lan Di. In the end, Dou Niu is able to complete this task, but fails to hand Zhu over to Lan Di due to intervention from Ryo Hazuki and Ren.

In the game, he was voiced by Masayuki Kumagai in Japanese and Dean Harrington in English. In Shenmue the Animation, he is voiced by Takahiro Sumi in Japanese and Joe Daniels in English.

Biography[]

Dou Niu is a large brute like character who is very dimwitted and easily tricked by his rival Ren, with Ren even dubbing him as "Stupid Dou Niu". He is very strong in hand-to-hand combat, and easily overpowered Ryo on two occasions and Ren on at least one. Throw moves are useless against him as well. He is no match for martial arts masters like Xiuying since she dealt a major amount of damage to him with only one move when he defeated Ryo outside the Ghost Hall Building where his gang captured Yuanda Zhu. Ryo's able to not be easily defeated during his final battle with Dou Niu, and finally ends up defeating him with the Counter Elbow Assault move Xiuying taught him when he listens to her advice to keep his mind clear as a polished mirror.

Dou Niu is very power hungry and wants to take over the whole city of Kowloon. He also is very arrogant and has a stone bust of himself near his office and the inside of his office has large framed portraits of him and Yuan. Dou Niu is also homosexual or bisexual since he's in a relationship with Yuan who is a man that's a transvestite. This is the case in the original Japanese version of the game and in Shenmue the Animation, but in the English versions of the game, Yuan was censored to be a woman. Due to the gender change, it seems as if Dou Niu would be heterosexual in these versions. In the Japanese version, Dou Niu actually refers to Yuan as his "cute love thing", while in the English version, he simply refers to him as his "partner". The game also has several allusions that they are involved romantically too. The anime restores Dou Niu being in a homosexual relationship with Yuan and he refers to Yuan as his "cute little Yuan" rather than his "partner", making the dialogue very similar to the original.
