Doug MacRay is the main protagonist of the 2010 thriller-action film The Town. He is a professional and intelligent robber who leads a Crew of robbers. He works for an Irishman named Fergus Colm.
He is portrayed by Ben Affleck, who also portrayed Ivan Block in Runner Runner, Fred O'Bannion in Dazed and Confused, Shannon Hamilton in Mallrats, Bartleby in Dogma, Tom "Redfly" Davis in Triple Frontier, Vic Van Allen in Deep Water, and Count Pierre d'Alençon in The Last Duel.
Biography[]
Childhood[]
Not much is known about Doug's past. He is of Irish origin, his father Stephen MacRay moved from Charlestown to the suburbs, while his mother Doris abandoned him at 6 years old.
Doug talks about the day she left, explaining that as a child he got out of bed in his pajamas and saw his father crying, after the father noticed his son he stopped and said that the lady had left and not to hope that she will return because she would never return. Doug, who had already lost his dog the previous year and had found it by hanging flyers, thought the mother was perhaps lost so she started hanging flyers hoping she would call but she didn't call and never came back. Doug's grandmother had a club in Florida and Doug thought it was her place, but after a while he started to accept that she was gone and gave up.
At school he was enrolled in ice hockey but after several attempts he failed to pass the qualifications even after a second chance losing his dream of qualifying for a team.
Criminal Life[]
He started a Crew and he started committing crime with his crew and his father Stephen MacRay, he often worked for the Irish mob Fergus.
After some time he started committing robberies until he became a professional, at a certain point his father Stephen MacRay was arrested.
Doug continued to commit robberies without any problems until the Cambridge robbery.
After Cambridge Heist[]
After entering the bank with his Crew they immediately begin to steal the money from the cash registers, the time has come for the bunker to be opened, MacRay has taken the director of the bank to open the vault which after a few attempts succeeds, however the director named Claire Keesey, is kidnapped by Jam after he activates the silent alarm.
The group will release her (after taking her license) on the beach and they will tell her that until her bare feet touched the water she will not be able to remove her blindfold. After being interrogated by the FBI, Doug spies on her to make sure she doesn't know too much about her but he ends up falling in love with her and Jem finds out. After a hit to an Armored Van with his Crew, who had shot a guard of the van injuring him and several policemen during the escape, Doug will return to Claire but Jem will remind MacRay that Fergus wants another job and that he cannot abandon him because they are brothers. After an argument Doug will go to Claire but he will see her crying and he will understand that she had discovered her true identity, after talking to her she will go to the Irish mafioso Fergus to accept the next assignment.
The plan is to steal money from horse betting and takings from horse racing at the racetrack, for a total of $3 million. However, one of Doug's exes will try to get closer in order to get a slice of the money but she will be removed and thrown out of the apartment with her baby.
Once they enter the racecourse the plan goes well, they tie up the guards, steal the money and dressed like policemen they leave the garage, when they arrive in front of the ambulance they take off their police clothes but Doug realizes that something is strange, after looking outside he discovers that the FBI and the police knew about the plan and discovers that a SWAT team was inside the garage after an intense firefight Desmond and Albert die and Jem and MacRay dressed as policemen leave the scene, however MacRay sees that from afar Jem is spotted by the agent FBI, Adam Frawley, who calls him and after calling him by name James turns quickly and starts shooting at the agent who takes cover, Jem shoots chasing Adam for a while until he runs out of bullets and runs away.
Once he reaches the middle of the road the police surround him and Jem takes cover among the passing cars. Jem will be able to fight alone for a while against the policemen even after receiving several wounds, however after taking cover he runs out of ammunition and not wanting to be arrested he comes out with his weapons unloaded making believe he is ready to shoot and is shot dead by the officers , MacRay sees the helpless scene and decides to flee, MacRay will run until he reaches Rusty and Fergus and kills them both in a firefight.
After calling Claire he discovers that the police were in her house and says goodbye to her one last time. Finally he leaves a note to insult the agent Adam will go and a bag in Claire's flower garden, the bag contains his share of the money from the racetrack heist which he will give to Claire.
Doug escapes to Florida by disguising himself as a bus driver and then boarding a train.
Personality[]
Doug has a very good personality, although he often commits crimes he tries to avoid murders as much as possible even if he later kills Fergus and his right-hand man in revenge. MacRay is very intelligent, good at organizing plans, he has a lot of cold blood and also knows how to manipulate, in fact he will manipulate Claire, he has a protective personality towards family and friends and has a lot of humanity and good characteristics, however due to the environment he grew up in here and the family he had was corrupted into living a life of crime causing pain to those around them or those who stole. Although Doug felt remorse several times, he never stopped committing the acts he committed.
