~ Doyle trying to hire Smith.

Doyle is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Fredo Strozzi) of the 1996 movie Last Man Standing.

He was portrayed by David Patrick Kelly, who also portrayed Luther in The Warriors, Orville Underwood in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, T-Bird in The Crow, and Sully in Commando.

Biography[]

Doyle is a bootlegger lord from Chicago residing in the town of Jericho. He lives at the Alamo. He is at war against the Italian gangster Fredo Strozzi though the two established a truce by the time being.

After some of his men are killed by John Smith, he hires a hooker to trap the man and sends another bunch of his men in retaliation. The attempt fails again.

Surprisingly, Doyle decides to recruit Smith as an assassin, having deemed the men Smith killed as idiots. He visits him in the tavern and offers him the job to kill Strozzi and his men, thinking Doyle is only for the money. Smith asks info about his dreaded right-hand Hickey. Doyle warns him Hickey can be dangerous sometimes. As an answer, Smith says he will think about it, angering Doyle, who calls him an idiot and leaves the tavern.

Doyle is later informed that Giorgio is in Mexico and is planning the next shipment of boozes. Happy to hear this, Doyle tries to hire Smith again, only for Smith to say he will think about this. Angry, he shouts at Smith what holds him back, which alerts his men. Doyle introduces Smith to Hickey and brings his men to his office for a meeting. He orders Hickey to kidnap Carmonte to demand a hundred grants from Strozzi. The kidnapping is successful and the exchange happens between the two rivals. It goes well at first, but Doyle’s right-hand shoots the man who brought the briefcase with the money inside. This prompts Strozzi to show he has Doyle’s daughter in hostage and tell he will keep her as long as he Carmonte is not released. This forces Doyle to agree. Strozzi and Doyle then leave the place once the exchange is done, but not before Doyle threatens Strozzi to murder him soon for what he has done.

Later, Doyle gets Smith’s services in exchange of a thousand grants. Hickey is revolted and shoots in the air, but Boyle stops it, telling to save the bullets for Strozzi. Smith informs him his rival has planned to get more men in order to defeat Doyle. The crime lord sends Smith to check over his girl.

The next day, he goes to the cabin where the girl is and finds out she’s gone. Smith claims she was hold captive by Strozzi’s men and fled when the shootout between them and Smith happened (he deliberately helped her to get back in Mexico in fact). A sad Doyle declares they will finish Strozzi soon.

Things change when Doyle learns Smith’s story was a lie. He has Hickey bring him to his lair where he tortures him to have the location of his girl. But Smith doesn’t talk.

Later at night, Smith escapes. Furious, Doyle searches everywhere in Jericho, torturing the bartender as he suspects him to hide the traitor in his tavern. However, the corrupt sheriff of the town informs the gangster Smith is at Slim’s Roadhouse. Doyle and his men go there and wipe out Strozzi’s gang. His Italian rival is shot by Hickey and Doyle orders his men to shot Carmonte.

After winning the war against Strozzi, he travels to Mexico with Hickey to find Felina, without success. He returns to Jericho at the roadhouse to find Smith waiting for him. Doyle claims to be impressed and offers to cure him so he can work for him again. He also asks her to return to Mexico with him to look for Felina. With no response from Smith and his rifle still pointed at him, Doyle begins to lose his temper, but is promptly killed by the bartender in revenge for the torture inflicted upon him.
