Dr. Anna Ripley is a major antagonist in the first campaign of the D&D web series Critical Role and its animated adaptation The Legend of Vox Machina, and the titular main protagonist of its prequel graphic novel The Legend of Vox Machina: The Whitestone Chronicles: Ripley.

She was a Tinkerer under Lord and Lady Briarwood's employment until they betrayed her. When Vox Machina found her, she briefly joined them to get back at the Briarwoods. She would later join forces with the black dragon Umbrasyl in his quest to take over Tal’Dorei for the Chroma Conclave and kill Vox Machina. She is also the second archenemy of Percival de Rolo and Vex'ahlia.

She was voiced by Kelly Hu, who also played China White in Arrow, D'Vorah in Mortal Kombat, Cheshire in Young Justice, Karai in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Lady Shiva in Batman: Arkham Origins, Lady Deathstrike in X2 and Miss Mirimoto in Scooby-Doo! and the Samurai Sword. As a child, she was voiced by Kimiko Glenn, who also voiced Susan in Hazbin Hotel and Lena De Spell in Ducktales 2017.

Background[]

Anna once developed military weapons for the capital of the Dwendalian government. But she was eventually caught performing illegal human experimentations in an attempt to use arcane diseases as the basis for new biochemical weaponry. She fled to Port Damali, where she met Lord & Lady Briarwood, who had escaped from prison for necromancy. The three fugitives decided to form a pact, with Anna participating in the murder of the de Rolo family and taking over Whitestone. Quickly after that, Anna tortured and interrogated Percy about Whitestone Castle.

Anna helped the Briarwoods reestablish social control of Whitestone. The Briarwoods appointed her their chief scientific designer to help create an acid compound that would instill whitestone ore into residuum.

A year later, Percival escaped his imprisonment and tracked down Anna's location in a failed attempt to kill the doctor. Percy was caught by the guards and reimprisoned in the Umbra Hills. Little did Ripley know, Vox Machina found Percy in his cell and provided him with food to keep him alive.

A week before Vox Machina showed up for Percy's aid, Ripley finished her work for the Briarwoods and packed up, ready to leave. However, Professor Anders saw this and informed the Briarwoods of it, which led to Ripley's imprisonment. The doctor believed this was a measure to be taken until the ziggurat's completion.

The Legend of Vox Machina

Season One

When the party went underneath Whitestone castle, they went through the cell room, where Dr. Ripley happened to be locked in. She offered to take them to the Briarwoods if they freed her. Just as Vax was picking at the lock in the cell door, Percival angrily stood in his way and pointed his pepperbox at her face preparing to kill her, until Cassandra convinced him otherwise, since keeping Ripley alive could be useful. Percy reluctantly agrees and pledges to kill her after.

As soon as they release her, they take her hostage. Ripley reveals the Briarwoods imprisoned her after she had outlived her usefulness to them. Percy searched the doctor's back and found she had been putting together her own pepperbox, which he confiscated. Ripley told Vox Machina that she found and restored the ziggurat for Silas and Delilah and had found a way to augment it with the help of residuum, although she claimed ignorance on what the Briarwoods wanted with it. As the party went further with her, she asked Percy about how his gun worked, only to be met with silence by him. Ripley soon led the party through a trapped hallway in the de Rolo family tomb, where they fought a cluster of zombies. After that, they entered a room redesigned to to refine residuum.

After Cassandra betrayed the party (Under Silas' charm) and locked them except Vax, (who was also charmed) the Briarwoods mocked them, as well as Ripley before leaving them to die in an acid trap. But soon enough, Ripley helped Percy find out how to turn the machine that spewed the acid off. Once it was done, she asked for her freedom, only for Percy to coldly reply, "If you're lucky, you've earned a few more minutes of life."

When the party finally reached the ziggurat, Ripley informed Percy he could not defeat the Briarwoods and offered him to go with her, deciding to flee. This tempted Percy to kill her then and there. Percy had to force himself not to shoot Ripley however, not to attract the Briarwoods' attention. Ripley then runs away, tauntingly uttering, "Until next time Percival."

Season Two

Thordak: (contacts Umbrasyl via. scrying sphere) Umbrasyl.
Umbrasyl: Thordak.
Thordak: You have what I need for the emergence. Where is my gold?
Umbrasyl: (
hang up the call by smashing his scrying sphere outright) Apologies, my king.
Anna: Umbrasyl, what happened?
Umbrasyl: An ambush.
Anna: And the other vestiges?
Umbrasyl: Are on their way to us. The fools are bringing them here willingly.
Anna: But how will you defeat them? We should flee. You're injured.
Umbrasyl: (
finishes his healing) Am I?
Anna: Impressive.
Umbrasyl: (
flaps his wings and growls in agreement)
