Dr. Boyer is a minor antagonist in the manga and anime series Monster. He is a doctor at Eisler Memorial Hospital, and is initially friends with Dr. Kenzo Tenma, but turns on him when Tenma disobeys Director Heinemann. He supports the director's views, and is therefore corrupt and money-minded, and doesn't care about saving lives.
Biography[]
Dr. Boyer is first seen congratulating Tenma for the successful surgery he performed on a famous opera singer. He is later seen at a press conference with Director Heinemann and Dr. Oppenheim, taking credit for the surgery. It is revealed that the opera singer was given priority over an injured Turkish man, who had arrived earlier, resulting in the man's death.
A few days later, he is on duty when Johan Liebert arrives at the hospital in critical condition. When the city's mayor arrives a short time later, Director Heinemann orders Tenma to work on the mayor instead. He also contacts Dr. Boyer and Dr. Eisen and tells them to also work on the mayor, which would severely jeopardize Johan's surgery. As Boyer tells Tenma to get ready, Tenma decides to operate on Johan, telling Boyer to take charge of the mayor. As a result, Johan is saved while the mayor dies during surgery.
As Tenma leaves the operating room, Dr. Boyer confronts him and loudly blames him for the mayor's death, accusing him of creating a "hole" in the team by leaving without permission. When Tenma protests that Johan came in first and would have died, Boyer coldly says that he doesn't care who came first. Dr. Oppenheim arrives and supports Boyer, telling Tenma that he has reported him to the director and to prepare for sanctions.
The following night, at a social party, Director Heinemann orders the crowd to applaud Dr. Boyer despite the fact that he failed to save the mayor. Tenma is then humiliated with the sudden reveal that he has been demoted, and Boyer has been appointed head neurosurgeon in his place. Boyer goes to the podium and gives a speech about how "an operation requires teamwork," implicitly blaming Tenma for the mayor's death in front of everyone.
In the days that follow, Dr. Boyer abuses his position by overworking Tenma to the point of exhaustion. He then meets with Director Heinemann and Dr. Oppenheim, complaining that Johan and his sister are an inconvenience for the hospital, since there's nobody alive to pay their medical expenses. Director Heinemann then tells them to give the media a photo of the twins together, as an "emergency image-saver" for the hospital. However, Dr. Tenma would stand in the way of this, as the twins have not fully recovered yet. Heinemann orders Oppenheim and Boyer to remove Tenma from caring for Johan, which they immediately agree to do. Boyer also steals candy from Johan's room, along with Heinemann and Oppenheim.
When Boyer brings the twins together, Anna screams and faints, while Johan begins to cry and reaches out for her. Tenma discovers this and is outraged to see Boyer posing with a camera. Tenma confronts Boyer and accuses him of using the children to cause a media circus. Boyer gloats that Tenma has been dismissed as Johan's doctor, and he is now making all decisions. He tells Tenma that he is following the director's orders, and threatens to see Tenma ruined if he disobeys him again. He also shows no concern for how upset the twins are, only caring that Johan is "reacting normally" to stimuli, and then he has Tenma thrown out of the room.
Unbeknownst to Boyer, the candy that he earlier stole from Johan had been poisoned by him, and he is found dead in the hospital that night.
