Dr. Carl Wessinger is the main antagonist from the 1997 Sci-Fi Action Horror movie, DNA.
He is portrayed by Jürgen Prochnow, who also played Sutter Cane in In The Mouth Of Madness, General Ivan Radek in Air Force One, Maxwell Dent in Beverly Hills Cops ll, and Woodsmen in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.
Biography[]
Dr. Carl Wessinger is a genetic scientist who knows how to replicate DNA, but has grown tired of making formulas for other companies. He discovered a way to reanimate an enzyme with medical byproducts. When he finds out about a Doctor's studies on a cure for a lot of diseases, he wants the research.
Wessinger sees the Docter in a small village in the jungles of Bonero named Ash Mattley. Ash studies an enzyme that could strengthen the immune system of people inside a rare beetle. Wessinger wants to find the beetle for the cure and convinces Ash to help him. So when Ash takes Wessinger to the cave where he found the beetle, along with a group of explorers, they journey into the cave to find an ancient shrine that belongs to the Jungle's Natives. There, one of the explorers finds two of the beetles. After he finds them, Wessinger takes them and shoots all of the explorers, including Ash.
Wessinger than hears the discovery of an ancient fossil of a mysterious creature. When he and a new team check it out, they find the fossil is made of the same material as the rare beetle's exoskeleton. Wessinger decides to add this into his research and calls it "Balakai". Wessinger starts to work for the government to get funding for his research on the fossil. Wessinger, however, plans on turning Balakai into a living creature, clone it, and sell the clones to other foreign governments to be used as a weapon of war. Balakai, however, grew hostile and escaped Wessinger's compound. Wessinger and his two scientists try to recapture Balakai for two years, but they have no avail.
Wessinger decides to get a sergeant, named Reinhardt, to help him find Balakai. Meanwhile, a CIA agent named Claire Sommers gets Ash Mattley, who somehow survived from getting shot, to help her find Wessinger, along with a Native boy named Matzu. Bakakai returns to Wessinger's compound and attacks, so Wessinger and the two scientists hide in a panic room. When Claire, Ash, and Matzu find the compound, Matzu gets seperates and Claire and Ash get chased after by Balakai and find Wessinger, whom leads them into a panic room. Ash confronts Wessinger for his betrayal from before and calls him out of his experiment. Everyone in the room, especially the two scientist, blame Wessinger for their predicament.
Since the power generator of the compound won't last, they have to work together to get out to get to the backup generator. Ash and the others look for Matzu while Wessinger and one of the scientists try to turn the generator back on. Balakai arrives and kills the scientist, while Wessinger gets away. After finding Matzu, Reinhardt and his team arrive and hold Ash, Claire, and the Scientist at gunpoint, while Matzu gets away. Wessinger arrives and helps Reinhardt trap Ash and Claire in a hole being filled with water. Ash tries to convince Wessinger to destroy Balakai, but he wouldn’t listen.
Wessinger then plans to use Ash and Claire as bait to capture Balakai. After the scientist calls him insane, Wessinger shoots him and has him be put in the cage, using him as the bait instead. Ash and Claire manage to escape and save the scientist. When Wessinger finds out, he and the mercenaries shoot at them, but they manage to escape back into the compound and find Matzu. Matzu gives them a remote he stole that was for the detonators that Reinhardt brought with him. The scientist tells them go while he stays behind to activate the detonators. Claire, Ash, and Matzu ride in a jeep to get away while Wessinger and the mercenaries shoot at them. However, they manage to escape as the scientist activates the denonators and blows ups the compound. Wessinger tries to run, but the explosion catches up to him and Wessinger gets incinerated. However, Balakai didn't get caught in the explosion, so Ash ends up fighting it until he kills it for good, erasing Wessinger's genetic research.
