The author is clearly Wake. It's like he's warning us. But about what? What does it mean? This page scared Jules away from the work on Wake's writing. The coward can't stand risk. But science is risk. For me, this is proof we are going in the right direction.

Dr. Diana Marmont is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Dr. Jules Marmont) of the 2024 survival horror videogame Alan Wake II DLC: The Lake House.

She is a scientist for the Federal Bureau of Control and co-head of the Lake House facility, working alongside her husband Jules. After the Oldest House's lockdown in 2019, the Marmonts changed Casper Darling's directive into creating a stable link between the Cauldron Lake threshold and their research facility. However, their obsession with one-upping each other results in them being turned into taken and being stopped by FBC field agent Kiran Estevez.

She is portrayed by Helene Maksoud.

Biography[]

Background[]

Little is known of Diana's past, but she earned a degree in science and became acquainted with Dr. Jules Marmont. The two developed a unshakeable partnership, using their strengths to cover their weaknesses (e.g. Diana's lack of people person skills). Presumably due to their work, the two were hired by the Federal Bureau of Control. After joining the bureau, the two fell in love and later married.

Research Facility WA-03[]

After the 2010 altered world event in Bright Falls, the bureau investigated the Washington town and investigated Dr. Emil Hartman's research on his patients. With the doctor's research, the organization learned that there was a paranatural entity residing underneath Cauldron Lake. Needing further investigation, FBC Director Zachariah Trench had Facility WA-03 (or the Lake House) built and assigned the Marmonts as its co-heads. Head researcher Dr. Casper Darling then assigned the couple and the staff to study the nature and power of the paranatural entity, as well as comprehend and suppress the Cauldron Lake threshold. In 2016, Diana started Project Arbutus to study the definition of art and study the concepts in a unit of measurement, but also research other forms of art that attracted "The Shadow".

During her studies, she found documents detailing Hartman's research on his patients at his lodge and decided to message Darling on using live test subjects. As the ash act protocol prohibited the use of human experimentation, bureau leadership denied her request and Casper visited the Lake House for one week. The visit left Jules in shambles, potentially starting the rift with his wife and his hatred for Darling. However, the Marmonts caught a lucky break when the Oldest House went into lockdown and Darling mysteriously disappeared. Able to commit unethical methods without repercussions, the Marmonts changed Darling's directive - create a stable link between the Cauldron Lake threshold and the Lake House by using sublevel five's newly created laboratory.

By 2021, Diana and Jules' relationship soured, with the two developing a pure hatred for each other. On Diana's side, she wondered why Jules received any credit for her work, further cementing her animosity toward him. Due to their clashing personalities and competitive nature, the two frequently clashed and wanted to one-up each other from achieving success.

New Direction[]

We're still behind our projections. The more the machines can produce, the closer we can calibrate them to Wake's style. But proper calibrations takes a lot of raw material and production is slow.
~ Diana in her video, discussing Project Arbutus.

In 2022, manuscript pages written by Alan Wake were found by the team, which summarized the Marmont's past and their growing resentment towards each other. Diana was puzzled by how Wake knew of their past and rejected the notion that the writer had dictated their entire life, but questioned whatever Wake's writing created her conflict with Jules. The research team turned their attention to finding more information on Wake's typewriter and ink brand, but wasn't able to gather anything from his associates. Despite Wake's pages warning of the Marmonts' action leading to certain doom, Diana decided to change Project Arbutus from studying the definition of art to mimicking Wake's writing style. Due to Jules' fear of the manuscript pages and differences on achieving results, he created Project Rhamnus to study Rudolf Lane's paintings.

Once the projects were separated, Diana's team went on to create automated type writers to imitate Wake's writing style, hoping it could affect reality with the same consistency as the writer. Progress was far behind initial projections, as the team needed more of Wake's pages, frustrating Diana. More frustration came when Jules sabotaged Project Arbutus by having "misplacing" manuscript pages, which gave him more time to coerce Lane into making more paintings. Once Jules achieved success with the painter, Diana suspected that he sabotaged her project and decided to copy his work in using living test subjects. As her team were watching Ed and Tammy Booker, two writers who witnessed the ritualistic murder of Robert Nightingale by the Cult of the Tree, Diana had them abducted.

Once abducted, Diana told the Bookers of her intention to have them write in Wake's style, but they (mainly Ed) believed that he was in a writing workshop. While she found some initial success with Ed, she became frustrated with he started to write about her life with Jules. Once Lane took his own life and left behind a final painting, Diana planned on worsening Ed's conditions to potentially have his writing affect the threshold. However, she became angry at Jules for preparing for his experiment with Lane's final painting, with her even thinking of sabotaging his experiment out of spite. On the day of the experiment, the threshold link became unstable and allowed the Dark Presence turn Diana, Jules and the staff into taken.

Alan Wake II[]

The Final Draft[]

Diana is mentioned in the manuscript page "Breakthrough in the Lakehouse", which speaks of the Dark Presence taking over the research facility and turning Jules into taken. In his final moments, Jules smiles as he had one-upped Diana while she thinks of his warn smile in her final moments.

The Lake House[]

With the early-warning alarm system going off upon the presence of the first overlap, FBC agent Kiran Estevez travels to the Lake House in hopes of getting information regarding the situation. Entering the facility, she sees a video of the Marmonts introducing visitors of the Lake House, which ends with the couple shouting at each other. Upon leaving the elevator, the facility's breach systems reach the rest of the Lake House and Estevez witnesses visions of Scratch and the taken Marmonts. While Jules kills Estevez's team and stalks the agent, Diana stays in the shadows as Kiran learns of what caused the facility's breach. In addition, Estevez encounters Lane's sentient painting, which also has its creations attack the agent during her investigation.

At sublevel five's lab, Diana kills Jules by crushing his head to death with black rock when he attempts to kill Estevez. After killing her husband, the taken Diana attacks Kiran but is killed in the process. Upon her death, Estevez breaks the unstable link to Cauldron Lake's threshold, thus ending the breach.

Quotes[]

"There was a crack in the Lake House. The Marmonts had let the lake in, but the water could not flow. It became trapped, stagnant. Went bad. The truth was controlled here. The art was not art. Just content for the experiment. This contrived Overlap rebounded on itself. Compressing. Compounding. Reflecting and refracting. An urban legend and a murder in constant imbalance. Cause and effect hopelessly tangled." The author is clearly Wake. It's like he's warning us. But about what? What does it mean? This page scared Jules away from the work on Wake's writing. The coward can't stand risk. But science is risk. For me, this is proof we are going in the right direction.

We're still behind our projections. The more the machines can produce, the closer we can calibrate them to Wake's style. But proper calibrations takes a lot of raw material and production is slow. No. We're changing directions. The hypothesis remains unchanged: Imitating Wake's writing style will allow us to generate art capable of linking with the Threshold. Our live subject should match Wake's style much faster. People can be calibrated just like a machine, you simply have to push the right buttons.
~ Diana's video discussing her project.
I can't allow Jules to stumble his way into success. Not after the years of work I put into this research. I got word yesterday that two writers just arrived in Bright Falls. I will beat Jules to the finish line.
~ Diana's recording.

He booked the lab. Some big experiment tomorrow! I can't find the details anywhere. The bastard is hiding them. All those years he steals credit for my ideas, my work, and now he's scared of being plagiarized? That is really f-cking rich, Jules! And he's reportedly "misplaced" the manuscript pages I need for my work. Suddenly the exact pages I need to reference have just vanished. He is actively impeding critical bureau research! I mean, if he can do that then what is stopping me from going down the lab and, I don't know, inverting the amplifiers, or, or, or misaligning the receivers, or both?! It's the same thing in principal!
