You know, nineteen years ago, my wife Mary gave birth to an eight-pound, nine-ounce baby girl. And at the moment of birth, I got to touch every inch of her. She had ten fingers, and ten toes, and she felt--she was... perfect. And I made a solemn vow from that day forward that she would always be perfect. But the world we live in doesn't cherish perfection. And by the time she reached her teens, my daughter was out of control, and I felt... well, you know how it felt. I felt helpless. And that's when I was inspired to develop this program, and I devoted every ounce of my being to rescuing her. And... I'm proud to say that she's been accepted to the veterinary school of medicine at Stanford. She's in a committed relationship with a young San Francisco district attorney. And she bakes Toll House cookies that makes you see God.
~ Dr. Edgar Caldicott explaining his viewpoint and spinning lies about his daughter's fate in a deleted scene.
Steve: It's over, you son of a bitch. It's finished.
Dr. Edgar Caldicott: "Finished"? There'll always be other towns, and other troubled teens, and other worried parents. Science is God!
~ Caldicott's last words.

Dr. Edgar Caldicott is the main antagonist of the 1998 teen sci-fi thriller film Disturbing Behavior.

He was portrayed by Bruce Greenwood, who also played Nick Parsons in Double Jeopardy, Cooper in Super 8, Wotan in Young Justice, The President in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and Gerald Burlingame in Gerald's Game.

Biography[]

Caldicott is a school psychologist who heads the Blue Ribbons, a special program that turns troubled teens into clean-cut citizens. He welcomes new student Steve Clark to Cradle Bay High School and is hailed by school staff for his success with the Blue Ribbons. Steve befriends three outcasts Gavin Strick, UV, and Rachel Wagner. Gavin suspects something sinister behind the Blue Ribbons. Caldicott is next seen at a parents meeting that Steve and Gavin spy on and announces that Gavin is the newest candidate for the Blue Ribbons. Gavin is taken and turned into a Blue Ribbon, effectively shunning Steve. Another Blue Ribbon, Lorna, attempts to seduce Steve in his house only to suffer a breakdown in which she injures herself. Caldicott supervises Lorna's treatment and tells her parents that she needs a new brain implant.

Steve befriends school janitor Dorian Newberry, who has fashioned the E-Rat-icator, which emits a high-pitched whine that acts as a deterrent against rats. Newberry reveals that the parents, faculty, and other officials of Cradle Bay hired Caldicott to reprogram the town's children into Stepford-like people to rein in their unruly behavior. Rachel finds a video that Gavin recorded of himself before his transformation into a Blue Ribbon, which tells more about Caldicott and the Blue Ribbons. She and Steve follow Gavin's lead and visit Bishop Flats, a mental hospital. There, they find out Caldicott is using mind control on Cradle Bay’s rebellious teens. However, Caldicott's implant has a glitch that results in momentary relapses and violent fits in their hosts. It turns out that Caldicott lobotomized his own daughter Betty, whom he previously tested his implant on.

Steve and Rachel decide to leave Cradle Bay to expose the truth about the Blue Ribbons. When Rachel and Steve return to the latter's home to get his sister, Lindsay, Steve's parents reveal that they moved to Cradle Bay to sign him up for the program. Caldicott appears and tries to talk an angered Steve down, only to be punched in the gut by him. Steve attempts to flee, but he and Rachel end up captured by Blue Ribbons. Caldicott has a brief confrontation with a restrained Steve before he's nearly subjected to the transformation procedure.

After Steve and Rachel escape and attempt to flee town with Lindsay and UV, Caldicott and his subjects form a roadblock in front of them. When Newberry arrives to rescue Steve and his group, Caldicott fires at him with a handgun but gets hit by Newberry's car. Newberry then activates multiple E-Rat-icators that scramble the Blue Ribbons' implants. After a fatally wounded Newberry drives off a cliff with most of the Blue Ribbons hanging onto his car, Caldicott faces off against Steve and ends up kicked off the cliff.

Though Caldicott dies, it is strongly hinted that Gavin, who survived the film's events, will continue his work in an urban high school.

Quotes[]

Every time one of these kids gets a hard-on, they go out and beat somebody with it.
~ Caldicott lamenting the imperfections of his implant.
Dr. Edgar Caldicott: We're trying to determine the cause of her violent reaction. Now, part of the treatment was designed to regulate endocrinologic surges during moments of arousal or emotional conflict. There appears to be an irregularity, a wild-card response.
Surgeon: Which threatens to compromise us and the entire project.
Dr. Edgar Caldicott: We've mopped up the mess; there is no threat of exposure. The treatment works for the most part. Now, with every successive kid, we are getting closer and closer to perfection. I got a couple of tiny glitches to iron out. You'll have your prototype.
~ Caldicott explaining what went wrong with his implant in a deleted scene.
Steven, you are home. Cradle Bay is where you belong, here with your family.
~ Caldicott appearing in Steve's house.
Dr. Edgar Caldicott: Steven, do you really like the way you feel?
Steve: Oh, shut the f*** up!
~ Caldicott during Steve's argument with his parents who betrayed him.
It's time to leave mediocrity behind, Steven. Step up on the bus.
~ Caldicott to Steve as he and his subjects form a roadblock.
