I want you to eat her...
~ Jacob's most famous quote as he reveals his true colours.
You see you're not in charge of this situation, you can't fit it all neatly into a 15-square grid, this is messy and illogical and out of control. This is my revenge Nigel SO SIT DOWN WHILE I PREPARE YOUR FOOD!
~ Jacob's villainous breakdown.
Tastes like chicken apparently, but then again doesn't everything...
~ Jacob's other most famous quote before forcing Squires into eating Nina's flesh.

Dr. Jacob Tyler is the main antagonist of the Inside No. 9 episode "The Riddle of The Sphinx". He is a professor of marine biology as well as the head lecturer and father of Charlotte seeking vengeance against Professor Squires for essentially ruining his life, willing to go to extreme lengths to gain said revenge.

He was portrayed by Reece Shearsmith who also played Ray, Hector, Dr. Maxwell, Mr. Warren, George, David, Henry, Viktor, Neville Griffin and SPC Varney in the same series as well as Mr. Jelly, Maureen Sowerbutts, Jeremy Goode and the Silent Singer in Psychoville, Edward Tattsyrup, Ross Gaines, Papa Lazarou, Geoff Tipps, Bernice Woodall, Judee Levinson, Oliver Plimsoles, Cathy Carter-Smith and Father Halfhearte in the League of Gentlemen, Gagan Rassmussen in Doctor Who, Malcolm Webster in The Widower and one third of the Vogons in the 2005 film adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Tyler attended university with Nigel Squires who he quickly became best friends with, at one point however he met and fell in love with a fellow student who he later impregnated. The two ended up having two children together before Tyler found out that his wife was having an affair with Squires behind his back. In a fit of rage he abandoned her with Squires and raised their children by himself, with his son Simon growing obsessed with winning back his mother's approval. In an attempt to win his mother over Simon enters one of Squires' crossword competitions and actually wins, however Squires uses a technicality of claiming his "u" at the end of a word looked like a "v" resulting in his disqualification. A depressed Simon killed himself further fuelling Tyler's bitterness especially when he found out from the autopsy that Simon wasn't actually his son but Nigel's.

The Riddle of The Sphinx[]

Tyler enlisted the help of Charlotte and developed a revenge plan of his own which played into Nigel's love for crosswords by seemingly getting Charlotte to poison him with extract of a pufferfish liver in his tea after breaking into his house and posing as a clueless girl trying to help her boyfriend with one of the crosswords to impress him. However Tyler contradicted his own plan deliberately by calling Squires and telling him what she was going to do, causing him to switch cups and poison her instead knowing that Jacob promised a cure when he arrived.

After coming to the scene Tyler reveals to Squires his true intentions and backstory and that there was never actually an antidote for Charlotte, telling him he wants him to eat her so he can truly say he "devoured his victim" like the real Sphinx. Naturally Squires is horrified at the concept especially as the story becomes clearer and clearer to him that Tyler was poisoning his own daughter and willing to let her die just so he can frame Squires with the crossword and enact his revenge in a complicated but malicious way. He fries a portion of Charlotte's posterior on a portable frying pan before forcing a disgusted Squires to eat it. To add insult to injury he reveals that Charlotte is actually Squires' daughter and he had been tricked into poisoning and eating her, leaving a devastated Squires and defeated and alone with nothing left but his empty gun. Tyler leaves him a bullet and completes the crossword which leaves it's final words as "RIP NHS (Nigel Hector Squires)" before Squires shoots himself in the head in grief, meaning Tyler had won.

Personality[]

Tyler is a cold, calculating, patient and emotionally numb man who has grown completely nihilistic and blinded by nothing but vengeance, going as far as to use the child he raised's life just to enact his own revenge. He was incredibly bitter at how his life had gone and blames Squires for stealing everything from him from a nice house, his girlfriend, even his children and appears to know nothing aside from his own hatred for his former friend.

Appearance[]

Tyler is a skinny man in his forties with pale skin, receding blonde-ish hair, light stubble and blue eyes. He wears a yellow tartan blazer with a marigold cardigan, white shirt, tartan tie and beige trousers alongside black shoes.

Trivia[]

  • Originally Tyler wasn't actually going to appear in the episode, with it being a two-hander between Squires and Charlotte instead.
