Villain Overview

Video games are everything! Jobs, entertainment, lifestyle, it's the engine that powers society itself, and to make it in this society, you need to win...a lot. Be it in FPS games, platformers, battle royales, you name it. There are gamers who train every waking moment of their life in hopes of becoming the best. And at the top of the food chain, you have Meta Runners. People who are willing to replace their limbs just for a boost in accuracy, dexterity, and performance. With legions of fans who adore them, Meta Runners are the best of the best. That is, until the world sees what I have planned. Until the world sees you... Tari.
~ Sheridan in the beginning of the series.
Oh, getting into Meta Runner arms is easy if you know what you're doing. As for who I am, Well... I have gotten a few names and aliases recently, but for you, my dear, you can call me... Sheridan.
~ Sheridan to Evelyn Claythorne at the end of Season 2.
Sheridan: Get off me! I am supposed to win! None of you stupid, brainless, weak-minded IDIOTS are going to destroy my work ever AGAIN!
Marco: Well technically, I'm not going to destroy your work. You are.
~ Sheridan's ironic last words and villainous breakdown before Marco puts several of his own control bugs on his body and electrocutes him to death.

Dr. James Sheridan, also known as simply Sheridan or the Annoying Neighbour, is the overarching antagonist of the Glitch Productions computer-animated web series Meta Runner and the main antagonist of the third season of the same series. He also serves as a supporting character in the prequel comic book series Meta Runner: SOURCE.

He was an ex-TAS Corp scientist and the mastermind behind Project Blue, a mysterious project where he planned on creating an A.I called T.A.R.I. (stands for Turbo Artificial Rapid Intelligence) to assist Meta Runners in order to avoid getting fired by Derek Lucks. His dream was to use the project to become known in the gaming industry, but after an accident that ended the project prematurely, he then abandoned this dream and went down a path of spiteful insanity. He is also Tari’s creator and arch-nemesis.

He is voiced by Anthony Sardinha, who also voiced Lamar Williams from the same show, DJ Grooves in A Hat in Time, and the Funky Fource and Froy and Doy Maloy in Sunset Paradise.

Personality[]

Masa: Congratulations, Sheridan. You actually did outdo Lucks.
Dr. Sheridan: Oh yeah!? How's that!?
Masa: You're a bigger monster than he ever was...
~ Masa comparing Dr. Sheridan's heinousness to Lucks.

Before the accident, Dr. Sheridan appeared to be an affable and encouraging man, as he is shown gently encouraging Tari and pushing her to do her best when training at her games.

Throughout the completion of Project Blue, he began growing signs of mental instability, as he is shown laughing madly and becoming more disturbed as time goes on.

After the accident, Sheridan has been shown to have gone completely insane, frequently going on long rants and acting incredibly eccentric and constantly joyful regardless of the situation. He also gained an incredibly short temper, childishly claiming he didn’t want Belle and Masa on his team when they refuse to join.

Despite his insanity, Sheridan at least manages to maintain a part of his calmness in some situations and is still determined to ensure that he would do anything to win, even if it meant enslaving those who had worn his creations for the sake of it.

Appearance[]

Sheridan has dark skin, brown eyes, dark brown hair, and dark brown eyebrows. He wears a grey and blue coat with a tan vest and white undershirt. The ending of Season 2 also reveals that he has severe burns on the left side of his face, likely due to the incident. In Season 3, Sheridan's skin tone is somewhat lighter.

Biography[]

Background[]

Sheridan was originally a scientist working at TAS Corp until he was under Lucks' threat of being fired, in which he started his lifelong Project Blue to keep his job and to revolutionize the gaming industry. At first, everything was going smooth as the AI he built proved to be useful, beating each game he chose optimally. While looking for a human host to implant the AI, Sheridan acquired help from Lucinia, one of the Meta Runners working for TAS Corp.

After a while of testing, Sheridan decides to take the experiment to the next level by downloading a more advanced version of the AI into Lucinia's arm, however, it ultimately results in an explosion which puts her comatose and Sheridan scarred.

Season 2[]

Starting from "Firewall", Sheridan was disguised as Masa's "neighbor" who likes constantly bugging him, before letting him talk with Lamar and Sofia. He did not show up until he was seen in the stadium and slapped Masa's arm on his way to distract Lucks, before retreating to his hideout and watching the events unfold. Sheridan hacked Masa's arm and made him pull the trigger to kill Lucks, framing him for the CEO's death.

Shortly after Lucks' death and the departure of MD5, Sheridan contacted Evelyn to have her join him to have his revenge on Tari.

Season 3[]

It was revealed that Sheridan warped the minds of Belle and Masa into his server, thus meeting them face to face. He also created an AI version of Lucks as his servant. During that time, he revealed to Masa that he made him kill Lucks, much to Masa's anger.

Sheridan managed to revive Lucinia with the fragments Evelyn got from Tari, albeit she is in a state of amnesia and cannot talk. Belle and Masa found out about this during their training at Battle Blaze, in which their opponent is Lucinia. Masa congratulates Sheridan on outdoing Lucks by being a bigger monster than him before getting sent back to training.

He then sent Evelyn and Lucinia to find Tari and her friends in Skybreakers, with the latter's new abilities to hack the game, which allowed them to kill players in the safe zone. After taking out Theo, Lamar, and Marco in-game, Evelyn orders Lucinia to attack Tari and reclaim the fragments to which she complies. But Sofia calls out to her sister, which momentarily awakens her memory, Tari takes the chance to attack Lucinia, and gain her Meta Runner vision back.

In "Death Warp", Sheridan psychologically tortures Masa with his flashback of killing Lucks and offers him a control bug so he won't have those memories again. After Masa, Belle became another victim of his brainwashing. Near the end, when Lamar was warped to Sheridan's server, he finds everyone else was there with the brainwashed Belle and Masa standing aside from the doctor. After showing the advertisement for his company, Sheridan asks everyone if they had any questions, then proceeds to drop weapons from the video games presented in the series, and forced them to kill each other, before leaving the server.

Sheridan was back at his hideout, unaware of his computer overloading, watching himself on breaking news, wanted for the mass Meta Runners outage. He soon was aware Masa's free will was overloading and tried to control him again, but Masa pinned him and tried to choke him. Sheridan stabbed Masa's neck with a screwdriver, and it causes an explosion, knocking both of them unconscious. When Sheridan regained consciousness, he tried to kill Masa again, but he noticed Tari breached his server along with Lucinia. When Tari tries to convince him to stop what he was doing, Sheridan refuses and plans to harvest her brain functions, but Sofia hacks into the server and helped Tari to fight Lucinia, albeit to no avail. Tari managed to make her way to the lab and subdue Lucinia, but Sheridan stuns her and revoked Sofia's access while boasting about his victory over them.

Just as he is about to celebrate more, Sofia reveals that she had a tracker on the tracer program Sheridan made, which leads to Marco and his gang breaking into his hideout. Sheridan tries to shoot Marco, but he blocked off the shots and pinned him onto a table, Marco recognizes him as the masked man at the low tier, selling control bugs. Marco puts several of the bugs on Sheridan and knocks him over.

Sheridan then suffers a long and agonizing death by electrocution through his own meta bugs, along with his servers getting destroyed, until he was burnt to a crisp putting a fitting end to his reign of terror.

Quotes[]

My life's work is almost complete! Lucks is finally going to see the fruits of my research, and more importantly, I'm not going to be fired! (laughing) Wait, I probably shouldn't have said that...
~ Sheridan prior to the lab incident.
You two are just as bad as Lucks! None of you appreciate my work! I sprung you from prison, so you can join my new Meta Runner team and change the world with me! But maybe some prison time is exactly what you need! Wait, just checking. Do you want to join my team?
~ Sheridan getting frustrated at Belle and Masa.
Sheridan: Oh, don't be scared, Tari. I'm proud of you! You went out into the big world, and you did exactly what you were supposed to do!
Tari: What? Get kidnapped repeatedly?
Sheridan: No, silly. You took down Lucks! Bit of a roundabout way in how you did it. Didn't expect android's crew to show up but you know variables. But you got there in the end, sport! And now, I can decommission you and return all those extra brain functions you don't need to the person you took them from!
~ Sheridan revealing his plans for Tari.
Well, I didn't deserve this either, but you are going to help me fix all of that.
~ Sheridan, after showing his real face to Tari.
Greetings, citizens of… well, everywhere! My name is James Sheridan. Dr J. Sheridan, and today, I am announcing the launch of both Sher Corp and our flagship product! […] Introducing; Global Warp Technology! […] What’s the price of this grand new product, might you ask? Well, nothing! You see, I just want to help people. […] See, you all thought that Lucks was the visionary, but, he wasn’t! I AM! I invented the Meta Runner arm! Oh, didn’t know that, did you? All he did was slap HIS STUPID LOGO on it, and take all of MY credit! Well, I hope this demonstration helps everyone realize… just how much I am going to change the world.
~ Sheridan revealing his grand plan.
Who's famous now, Lucks?
~ Sheridan seeing himself on the news.
Masa: You can't control me anymore!
Sheridan: Oh no! My implant's gonna explode! You're gonna kill me!
Masa: So? I thought you wanted to be just like Lucks!
~ Sheridan getting attacked by Masa.
Tari: Sheridan! There's still time fix this! Stop your warp program and work with us to put everyone back in their bodies safely!
Sheridan: (chuckling) You think I'm stupid? I learned my lesson with TASCorp. I'm not sharing my work ever again. Now! Be a good little program and let me harvest you for... (he gets an alert for a server security breach.) brain functions?
~ Sheridan facing Tari.
You know, Tari. You put up a really good fight, and I probably be mad, if it weren't for the fact that I built you. So I guess, good job me! (laughs) But Sofia, you really went all in on that last malware, huh? You kids think so short term. You just made it easier for me to wipe you out of the system. So I WIN. I WIN!
~ Sheridan gloating his victory at Tari and Sofia.

Trivia[]

  • His favorite drink is coffee, as he is seen drinking it constantly.
  • When Masa shoots Lucks, Sheridan's theme plays, making this a hint he was the one who made Masa kill Lucks.
  • The burn on his face may be a nod to Zuko's scar from Avatar: The Last Airbender, as it’s in the same area where Zuko's is.
  • The mind illusion devices he uses to torture Masa with in Season 3 are likely a reference to the Marvel villain Mysterio and his ability to create illusions with his technology.
    • In fact, Sheridan has a lot in common with his MCU interpretation. Both have a want for revenge against their former boss for trying to fire them (though in Sheridan's case it was only a starting element of his fall into villainy while Mysterio completely snapped from the action alone) as their ulterior motive and both are Pure Evil while still maintaining several comedic moments and an over-the-top demeanor to boot. They also die with the item that killed being one of their personal resources while also being outclassed in terms of fighting prowess and physical strength by the one that finally put them to rest (though Mysterio's death was accidental when Peter reflected a drone while it was still firing.). Plus, their master plan truly starts to come into fruition once their boss is finally dead; said boss also being a major figure for the standards of their respective works.
  • The way he kills one of the Meta Runners in his server is similar to how Vecna kills his victims in Stranger Things.
  • Having to Kill Derek, Sheridan serves as the final main villain to die.
  • Ironically, Both villains got killed in a poetic way.
