Dr. Maddiman is a major antagonist in the Yo-kai Watch series, being a major antagonist in the first game, a minor antagonist in all versions of Yo-kai Watch 2, and a supporting character in Yo-kai Watch 3.

He is a deranged Yo-kai doctor who experiments on humans and Yo-kai alike for his own shady agenda or projects, such as putting various Yo-kai in comatose states and fusing their best traits to create Hans Full, and attempting to fuse three sea turtle Yo-kai into the Yo-kaiju, which failed, but ultimately didn't matter as they were merged into Yo-kaiju regardless thanks to one of Ghoulfather's minions meddling in their affairs.

Appearance[]

Dr. Maddiman is a Yo-kai mad scientist who has a head mirror for an eye, three sets of silver knives as his weapon, a red and greenish color palette, and wears a white lab coat and medical slippers. His fused heart is attached to some kind of strange life support device.

Nogut, his implicitly more insane alter ego, shares similar traits, however wears a dark coat instead of white, has a violet greenish color palette in contrast to red greenish, and has golden knives instead of silver.

Biography[]

Past[]

Before his lore was expanded upon in the sequels, Maddiman was as psychotic and deranged as the rest of Chairman McKraken's subordinates, being a sociopathic and manic lab doctor who vows eternal loyalty to Chairman McKraken and thrives from cutting human patients open and excluding the heart from the flesh. Out of all of McKraken's subordinates, he is probably the most unhinged of the roster, being rivalled only by Slimamander's monstrous homicidal nature.

However, after the events of Yo-kai Watch, a lore dump on Maddiman's family history turned him from another McKraken subordinate to one of the most sympathetic bosses of the franchise. It is revealed in his torn diary that he used to work on Nocturne Hospital as a doctor and when their son Cliff Nocturne was born, he had sworn to protect his family for as long as he lived, and taking over the world in their name. In order to achieve such a goal, he invested most of his time to the creation of the "Ultimate Yo-kai", Amatera, otherwise known as Hans Full.

It was here that his mentality took a dark turn, as the experiment caused him to perform many dangerous experiments on humans and animals alike, and not even his patients were safe. Blinded by his research, a part of his initial goal also seem to waver, as this experiment had slowly but severely weakened Maddiman's bond over his family, to the point where his son had even gone as far as to extort 30 dollars from him.

By the time he realized his neglectful habits, however, it was too late, as his wife and son, fed up with his neglect, would go on to move from their house in Cherry Hill to Dukesville, leaving him with only his research to cling onto. Eventually, "Amatera" was completed, but in the end it served no purpose, as his wife had divorced him and took his son away with her. Some time later, he died.

His wife and son in Dukesville also died from old age, but while his wife would move on to the afterlife, Cliff ended up becoming a Yo-kai known as Dr. Nocturne, haunting the graves of Dukesville in the shadow of night.

After the doctor's reincarnation as a Yo-kai, he would resume work on Amatera, despite not all of his memories being intact, and in an unknown point in time, met up with Chairman McKraken and became one of his elite subordinates.

Yo-kai Watch[]

In Yo-kai Watch, the doctor was a pivotal major antagonistic force throughout the game, attempting to extract the player's heart through violent means and use it for an unknown reason. Once defeated, he pleads to McKraken to save him, before presumably dying, and is never to be seen again in-game.

Yo-kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits/Yo-kai Watch 2: Fleshy Souls/Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters[]

In Yo-kai Watch 2, his character was more expanded upon, and became a turning point for his character in the franchise. When the player takes on the second Lina and Zoey sidequest, after attaching a lever to the broken mechanism near the pool, the water in the pool was suddenly drained, revealing his secret underground lab where he was working on Amatera/Hans Full. At this point in the story, the player has yet to remember the doctor and his criminal record in Yo-kai Watch, however Whisper, assuming the worst, meddled with the controls for Hans' test chamber out of distrust for the doctor and accidentally released Hans Full. The doctor escapes as his creation was unintentionally released to the world, fearing the worst, and was right in his intuition, as shortly after being freed from confinement, Hans grew abruptly violent and attacked its releasers. The player wins, and the doctor's life's work was decimated forever, never to be seen again.

Shortly after the events of The Haunted Hospital, the doctor grieved for the destruction of his lifelong project, and when confronted by the player, attempted to attack them however was demotivated out of grief for Amatera. He briefly mentions his diary and the player then decides to scout the hospital for missing pages of his diary in an attempt to cheer him up. It was revealed through the diary that the doctor had an unstable marriage and obsession towards Amatera in his time as a human (see Personality for more details) and was eternally stricken with grief over his past mistakes, with only gruel to briefly relieve his emotional woes. When the player learns of his tragic backstory and returns the diary to Maddiman, he was overjoyed, however was still upset about the player destroying his life's work, and attempted to kill them. The player wins, and the doctor retreats, never to be seen again in-game, and drops a ticket to Cherry Hill, his former home before haunting Nocturne Hospital.

Yo-kai Watch 3[]

In Yo-kai Watch 3, Maddiman hired the Hapyon Detective Agency consisting of new protagonist and massive otaku weeb Hailey Anne and new mascot Yo-kai Usapyon, in order to find him 3 Yo-kai turtles. After bringing him the turtles, he would show off his true colors, planning to experiment on the three Yo-kai and create Yo-kaiju. Disapproving of the animal cruelty, the two protagonists would go on to attack Maddiman in retaliation, and were victorious. Usapyon would go on to tell his backstory regarding his relation with Dr. Hughley and the doctor, brought to tears by this, would go on to release the Yo-kai in the seas, and asked Hailey and Usapyon to take him there.

His cruelty however would later come back to bite him in the ass, when a Ghoulfather minion used their magic to merge the turtles anyway and transformed them into Yo-kaiju. Maddiman in a state of panic, reached out to the Hapyon Detective Agency and asked for their assistance to pacify the beast and revert them back to normal. After defeating Yo-kaiju using a gigantified Blazikong T, the turtles were reverted back to normal, and the doctor insisted to take them under their care, fearing that mischievous Yo-kai would harm the turtles if left to their own devices. Initially the protagonists refused, but eventually they gave in and allowed the turtles to stay with the doctor, and they would go on to live happily ever after together, with the credits in Yo-kai Watch 3 implying that Maddiman took them to a vacation in the beach.

However, in the post-game, the turtle Yo-kai would post a request on the Hapyon Detective Agency request board, reporting about the doctor's strange behaviours. Concerned for him, they asked the duo to investigate the matter thoroughly, eventually leading to them finding the deceased spirit of the son of Maddiman himself, Cliff Nocturne, or Doctor Nocturne. Once they found him, they asked if he could return to his father's old workplace one last time at nightfall to cheer him up, and agreed to the deal as despite his father's neglect towards him and his mother, he still misses him from time to time. However, instead of showing up at the hospital at night time, he instead leaves behind a can of Dr. Rapper soda, with one last note saying that despite all of his faults, he no longer holds any resentment towards him, causing the doctor to break out in tears. Nocturne would later repay the favor to Hailey for reuniting him with his father (somewhat) by having Tie-red possess her work-heavy father and having him return to the household.

Powers and Abilities[]

Being a former doctor, Dr. Maddiman is skilled at utilizing medicine and knives to his advantage. Being a former surgeon, he is able to wield surgical knives well and use them as weapons, making them act like a makeshift claw, and is able to throw exploding poisonous medicine. He is also able to temporarily snatch Yo-kai hearts through Inspiritment, and is able to recover health from his life support through tiny hearts floating about in the arena in his boss fight, which must be pinned to prevent his recovery.
