~ Dr. Betruger explaining his motives. |
Dr. Malcolm Betruger is the secondary antagonist of the 2019 direct-to-DVD science-fiction horror film Doom: Annihilation, the second film adaptation based on the video game series Doom. He is based on the character of the same name from the games.
He was portrayed by Dominic Mafham.
Personality[]
Unlike his video game counterpart who wants to release the demons out of obtaining power, this Betruger sees the demons as the true owners of the Earth.
Biography[]
Dr. Betruger is the head scientist on the UAC's base on the Martian moon Phobos. For thirty years, he oversaw a project conducting ancient teleporters called "Gates", one on Phobos and the other on Earth, believing that it could help in humanity's future to find another planet to colonize.
After three decades of advances in technology, both Gates became operational, with a test to send a subject from Earth to Phobos. The experiment works, but the subject emerges partially deformed and mentally insane. Seeking answers, Betruger activates and enters the Phobos Gate himself against Dr. Khan's warnings. He finds himself in a hellish landscape where he encounters demonic monsters and their overlord Stanga, the latter of which manipulates him that they seek to enlighten humanity. The power on the Phobos base suddenly goes offline before the demons burst through the Gate and attack the scientists. Most scientists are killed instantly, others mutate into zombie-like creatures.
By the time the Marines arrive to investigate the incident, only Betruger and two others victims were still alive, alongside Chaplain Glover and Dr. Veronica Cyr. After he explains the purpose of the Gates, he suggests for the Mariners to help him restore the base's power so they could use the Gate to teleport everyone back to Earth. Lt. Joan Dark disapproves and orders everyone to instead evacuate the base on their transport. On the transport, however, the team is attacked by demonic imps which kill several Mariners and Glover. Joan kills them, but the controls on the transport are damaged, leaving them stranded.
Joan and the remaining Marines agree to Betruger's plan to restore the base's power, but Joan could tell that Betruger was hiding something. As they try to fix the main generator, Betruger identifies Joan as a disgraced lieutenant who allowed a terrorist to go free and mocks her, warning the team not to trust her. Once power is restored, Betruger stabs Veronica in the back with a pocket knife and locks the Marines in the power server with the imps.
The imps kill the Marines off until only Joan and Bennett are left, with Joan obtaining the BFG 9000. She confronts Betruger trying to restart the Gate. He reveals that he intends for the demons to invade Earth for they were the planet's initial conquerors and hold the next step in the evolution of mankind. Joan is distracted by a zombified Bennett, giving Betruger enough time to activate the Gate. After killing Bennett, Joan shoots Betruger. However, Betruger immediately stands back up and opens his shirt, revealing a hollow hole where his heart used to be. He taunts Joan that she can't kill what's already dead and uses telekinetic powers to push her through the Gate.
After escaping the demons from Hell, Joan jumps through the other Gate on Earth. The scientists restrain her when she orders them to turn the Gate off, as Dr. Kahn was convinced Betruger was coming through. A demonic growl is heard just as the film fades to black, implying Betruger succeeded in having the demons invade Earth.
