Marks: Hmmm. I underestimated you. I really did.
Bullock: So I'm right. Aha! Yes, I'm right and so you trolled all the outpatient clinics so you could find a suitable borderline case like Randall Milkie. And then you hypnotise the poor bastard until he literally doesn't even know who he is.
Marks: And then I tell him who he is. That's pretty good intellection, Detective.
Bullock: Why? Why hypnotize a janitor and turn him into the Goat?
Marks: You wouldn't understand.
Bullock: Try me.
Marks: It isn't an act of murder, or of madness; it's an act of therapy.
Bullock: Therapy? For who?
Marks: For Gotham.
Bullock: Excuse me?
Marks: This city used to have hope and they gunned it down in the street. The rich, the powerful. Their greed is pathological; an id run rampant, eating Gotham alive.
~ Dr. Mark's confession.

Dr. Marks is a psychopathic therapist and skilled hypnotist who enjoys hypnotising others into killing people as the "Spirit of the Goat" that serves as minor antagonist in Season 1 of Gotham. She is the main antagonist of the episode "Spirit of the Goat."

She is played by Susan Misner, who also portrayed Samantha Weaver in Law & Order.

Biography[]

Past[]

Dr. Mark's origins are unknown but she gained a Doctorate in psychology and became a skilled hypnotist whilst also gaining an intense hatred for the 1%. Around 2002, she became a therapist at a mental health outpatient clinic where she began searching for patients to hypnotise into becoming serial killers under the "Spirit of the Goat." To prevent them from killing when she did not want them too, she had them perform an instinctive action; hand clenching so as to release the murderous urges. She first chose at least one other unknown victim who was killed by Detective Harvey Bullock and his partner Dix but then brought back "the Goat" using Randall Milkie who she treated "a little over ten years ago" who killed several more only to be shot dead by Detective Bullock whilst trying to kill Shelley Lawson. Afterwards, the attempts by Martha and Thomas Wayne to clean up Gotham were implied to have

Gotham[]

After the deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne at the hands of Matches Malone in 2014 however, Dr. Marks returns to her old ways and hypnotizes Raymond Earl into the next "Spirit of the Goat" whilst also becoming the therapist to Mr. Robert Hastings and his family.

After Raymond Earl kills Robert's daughter Amanda, Marks is first seen comforting the grieving couple whilst dismissing Robert's instinctive hand clenching as stress. Later, she has Raymond kidnap Ember Cooley only for her to be saved and Earl arrested which leads to Harvey confronting Dr. Marks. Although initially pretending to want advice, he reveals that he discovered she was the mastermind due to the fact that she is a skilled therapist and that Earl and Milkie have the same hand clenching reflex. instructs Hastings to kill Bullock but he subdues Hasting and shoots Marks in the leg to prevent her from escaping so he can arrest them both.

It is very likely that Dr. Marks later receives life imprisonment for his actions and will spend the rest of her life in Blackgate Prison.

Personality[]

Bullock: So your 1% solution is to kill the city's rich kids?!
Marks: Negative reinforcement. To believe that the Goat is real, that it wouldn't tolerate this... Gotham wanted that, no matter how painful it was. It's true what they say. You can't really hypnotize somebody to do something that, deep down, they don't already want to do. And deep down, we all want to eat the rich. Don't we?
Bullock: You are one hundred percent nuthouse crazy, lady.
~ Dr. Mark's mental state and Harvey Bullock's summary.

On the surface, Dr. Marks is an amicable and friendly therapist who just wants to help her patients. In reality however, she is a deeply psychotic and troubled person willing to kill innocent teenagers for the perceived crimes of their parents. She is also not above murdering the murder of police as seen when she ordered Mr. Hastings to kill Harvey.

Skills and Abilities[]

  • Psychology: Having a doctorate in psychology, Dr. Marks is a very skilled psychologist who can help a person understand their issues whilst also manipulating them with it.
  • Hypnosis: Through unknown methods, Dr. Marks can hypnotise people and forcibly insert a new personality and influence. As described by Harvey Bullock, she makes the Goat the dominant personality which manifests as constant hand clenching so they can resist the urge to kill but it eventually completely takes over.

Quotes[]

Robert, if you need to take a moment, I'm sure it'll be alright. Come on. I know your gentlemen are working against the clock but I'm afraid Mr. and Ms. Hastings might not be ready for this.
~ Dr. Mark's first words when Harvey Bullock notices Mr. Hasting's hand clenching.
Bullock: I didn't realize this before... You're a hypnotist, right?
Marks: A hypnotherapist.
Bullock: Ah, therapist. That's a funny word, therapist. Can either mean therapist or "the rapist." So, you do pro bono work at an outpatient clinic? Or a couple of 'em?
Marks: I do. I try to give back.
Bullock: Yeah, and you've been giving back for a while. Uhhhhh, twelve years now?
Marks: Hmm hmm.
Bullock: That's good. To be honest, I wanted to talk to you about one of your pro bono patients. Raymond Earl? He's a patient of interest in our investigation. Our records indicate you've seen him... At least a few times, right? And Mr. Hastings, Amanda's father, we know he's your patient. When we were here yesterday, he was doing something very curious. He, uh, he kept clenching his fist. Over and over. Yeah. See, I was reading about that. It says that, if a patient has a compulsion, a bad idea, or an impulse, that the hypnotist can put the poor sap under and introduce a-a physical movement. Like clenching your fist. So instead of doing what the compulsion wants, the person to do they just... Clench their fist.
Marks: That's how it works, pretty much.
Bullock: So Mr. Hastings, when he's in a room full of people and he wants to start screaming his head off, I don't know, instead of doing that, he just... Yeah, okay. What about Raymond Earl? Why does he clench his fist. And what about Randall Milkie? See, I know you treated him a little over ten years ago and I want you to follow me because this part gets a little weird. See, I think a hypnotist completely turned both those men upside down until their identity was the bad idea. And then, it wasn't even them clenching their fists anymore. It was the Spirit of the Goat.
~ Harvey Bullock confronting Dr. Marks.
Well, I do have another one for you. Robert, the golden temple is open. Now, kill this man.
~ Dr. Marks ordering Mr. Hastings to kill Harvey and her last words before being arrested.

Trivia[]

  • Given she acted off logic for the most part, Marks had no reason to go after families with one child or the Waynes; in fact, she only restarted her crusade after Thomas and Martha Wayne died.
    • It's notable she only targeted late teens or young adults, showing some moral restraint of going after children.
