~ Dr. Moreau to Van Helsing. |
Dr. Moreau is the main antagonist of the one-shot comic book Van Helsing: From Beneath the Rue Morgue.
Personality[]
Dr. Moreau was defined by his God complex. He saw himself as a manipulator of evolution who surpassed God in every way. He cared not for his creations or the lives he ruined as a result of his actions, deciding to start over once he kills them all to allow himself to escape.
Biography[]
Dr. Moreau was a mad scientist originally from England who moved to Paris. He was also acquainted with Dr. Henry Jekyll. He began a series of unethical experiments in which he would fuse body parts of humans and animals together and create monstrous chimeras. He'd also steal corpses from the morgue to use as "clay" for his experiments. He had kept them captive in his own zoo in the sewers. With one of his monsters, he ripped the heart out of an innocent man and fused it with a body he made from the DNA of an Amazon toad called Bufo Marinus. He named the creature Beathán-an amphibious monster who still had his human consciousness inside but was powerless to do anything to stop himself from hurting others. He injected the beast with an invisibility serum, and at some point, his creature escaped and wreaked havoc in his path.
After Van Helsing was dubbed a "murderer" for killing Mr. Hyde, he claimed sanctuary in Notre Dame, much to the Vatican's dismay. As he is trying to go to sleep, one of the creatures' victims uses her psychic abilities to call Van Helsing for help. Helsing goes out the window and finds her alongside another woman in her apartment building. However, the invisible beast drags one women through the chimney, killing her, and throws the other out the window to her death.
Van Helsing manages to track the beast down to Moreau's zoo as he is about to feed it. Moreau makes it perfectly clear that he does what he does out of a God complex and is apathetic when Van Helsing informs him that the beast has murdered two innocent women.
Moreau unleashes his beast onto Helsing, who injects it with the antidote, managing to fight it off, as well as some of Moreau's other creations once the monster releases them. Soon after, though, the ghost of one of the monster's victims appears to Van Helsing, informing him of the monster's background and also revealing herself to be the monster's wife, while the second woman he killed was his daughter. Moreau, in a last-ditch effort to escape, drowns his entire lab out, killing his creations. However, Van Helsing and Beathan manage to survive. Realizing he must start over, Moreau decides he will sail to an island to begin his new work somewhere in the South Seas.
