Dr. Nefarious Tropy, also known as N. Tropy for short, is the secondary antagonist of the Crash Bandicoot franchise.
He is an evil scientist who specializes in time travel and was both an ally to Dr. Neo Cortex and the right-hand of Uka Uka in their quest for world domination, but later betrays them and teams up with a female counterpart of himself in order to destroy all reality and remake the timeline in their twisted image.
He was voiced by Corey Burton in the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled, who also portrayed Hugo Strange in Batman: Arkham City and Count Dooku in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and by J. P. Karliak in Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, who also voiced Wile E. Coyote in New Looney Tunes and the Joker in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
Biography[]
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy[]
He created the Time Twister Machine in Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped!. He was summoned by Uka Uka to assist Dr. Neo Cortex in their plans for world domination. Tropy was the third boss faced in the game, but was eventually defeated by Crash who gained the Super Spin ability upon defeating him.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time[]
Trapped with Uka Uka and Dr. Cortex in the Bone Yard (a level from Crash Bandicoot 3), he and Uka Uka actively try to escape the portal. As N. Tropy is arguing with Cortex about the chance to escape, Uka Uka with all his strength creates a Quantum rift (before passing out from exhaustion). Finally free, N. Tropy encourages Cortex to leave Uka Uka behind and they set off to conquer the multi-dimensions.
In their next appearance, N. Tropy and Cortex are seen creating the Rift Generator to gain access to all dimensions. After Cortex dismisses N. Gin and N. Brio's projects, N. Tropy sends them to travel to the Hazardous Waste Dimension & Tranquility Falls Dimension respectively warning them to anticipate Crash & his allies to stop them.
Following the defeat of Dr. Cortex in the 11th Dimension, N. Tropy, through a hologram, ridicules him and reveals that he never intended to simply conquer the multiverse. He, with his new partner (his female dimensional counterpart from Tawna's timeline) plan to use the Rift Generator to recreate the timeline where they are gods and where everyone except for themselves were wiped from existence. Enraged by this betrayal, Cortex decides to join his enemies in stopping the N. Tropy's.
Once Crash and his allies gather all four Quantum masks, they infiltrate Bermugula's orbit where N. Tropy and his dimensional counterpart command Nitrous Oxide to prevent their enemies from reaching the Rift Generator. Shortly afterwards the two N. Tropys begin flirting with each other (Much to Crash, Coco, Tawna, Nitrous Oxide, and Cortex's disgust and to Dingodile's amusement as they watch on screen). Later Tawna attempts to take the two doctors down on her own but is quickly defeated before Female N. Tropy mocks Tawna about killing her dimension's Crash and Coco. The rest of heroes arrive but are quickly separated from a Quantum Rift.
After Crash/Coco defeats N Tropy, Cortex attempts to mock Male N. Tropy for betraying him (using N. Tropy's very same words) before Dingodile and the Quantum Masks banish the two Doctor N. Tropys into an unknown Quantum Rift, leaving their fates unknown. The 100% completion epilogue reveals that the two villains haven't been seen since their defeat, but hints at their possible return by reminding that "evil geniuses are harder to squash than cockroaches".
Spin-offs[]
Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled[]
N. Tropy returns again in the remaster for Crash Team Racing serving the same role he had in the original game. He is a Speed class driver.
Personality[]
N. Tropy is an evil, smug, arrogant, and treacherous person who has an unhealthy obsession with time. His personality is in contrast to Cortex's childish and short-tempered personality. N. Tropy acts with a calm and collected demeanor, complete with a smooth British accent. His quotes in all of his appearances in racing games include time jokes and stereotypical British comments such as "Blimey!" or mentions of tea. In a deleted scene from Crash Twinsanity, N. Tropy is shown to spill his tea as he heard Moritz talking about riches. Tropy is also highly intelligent and manipulative, his technological breakthroughs arguably the most advanced of all of Uka's scientists, although the doctor must constantly maintain his time traveling technology to make sure it all runs like clockwork (to the point he apparently shows signs of obsession compulsion). Otherwise the results could be disastrous; as previously seen with his Time Twister machine when he was not around to take care of it.
Tropy always acts cool-headed, however, behind that coldness, he is shown to be more weak-minded and aggressive than he looks as soon as anyone starts to irritate him: he is very quick to get frustrated when anyone doesn't listen to him, things don’t go his way, or he repeatedly misses his target. As a result, he tires easily, which makes him vulnerable in a fight. Like Cortex, N. Tropy is also highly pompous, irritable, and foul-tempered, venting his frustrations at his associates or blaming them for his errors, something N. Trance was perfectly willing to call him out on, without fearing him.
Dr. Nefarious Tropy is a tall and blue humanoid with black eyebrows and two hairy portions emerging from his beard akin to hair. In Wrath or Cortex he primarily wore a white lab coat and gold clock-themed armor. In Crash Twinsanity, the face of the clock is purely white and he wears gold-colored boots.
In Crash 4: It's About Time, N. Tropy is revealed to be much more evil than previously led on. He is more than willing to annihilate the entire multiverse and everyone in it in order to rebuild the timeline in his own twisted image and reforge himself as a god-like being. To this end, he teamed himself with the only other being who would agree with his insane plan: a female counterpart of himself who is just as ruthless as he was. He's also shown to be attracted to those who are just as evil as himself, as seen when he constantly flirts with his female equivalent over their shared love for destruction and despair.
Overall, Nefarious is one of the most evil villains in the Crash Bandicoot franchise, as he attempted to destroy the multiverse for his own sadistic, malevolent pleasure.
Powers, Abilities and Weaknesses[]
N. Tropy is a highly intelligent engineer specializing in time travel. As such, he can create highly advanced devices such as the Time Twister and a steam powered Time Machine that he wears like armor. With his TimeStaff and Time Machine Suit, N. Tropy is capable of manipulating matter, shifting time and emitting energy waves. However, using these devices can greatly drain him, leaving him open to attack.
