Villain Overview

Well, haven't we gotten far for a pair of fuzzy marsupials? I am Dr. Nefarious Tropy, master of time and the creator of the very Time Twister machine you see before you. Uka Uka and Dr. Cortex have sent me to end this little charade, so you won't be leaving my area with the crystals. I swear it!
~ Dr. N. Tropy
You were content to simply rule over space and time, but I'd rather start from scratch. Erase it all. Wipe the slate clean. I'm going to reset the timeline and rebuild it to my liking. I will become a god. Which means YOU won't exist, and neither will those featherbrained masks, or those meddling marsupials! Hahahahaha!
~ Dr. N. Tropy betraying Cortex and revealing his ultimate plan to destroy the multiverse

Dr. Nefarious Tropy (or N. Tropy for short) is a major antagonist in the Crash Bandicoot video game series. He serves as a major antagonist in Crash Bandicoot: Warped, a minor antagonist in Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, a supporting antagonist in Crash Twinsanity, and he returns as one of the two secondary antagonists (working together with his female counterpart from another universe) of Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time.

He was voiced by Michael Ensign in all of his appearances, except Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled, where he was voiced by Corey Burton JP Karliak voiced him in Crash Bandicoot: It's About Time.

Biography

Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped!

He created Time Twister Machine in Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped!. He was summoned by Uka Uka to assist Dr. Neo Cortex in their plans from world domination. Tropy was the third boss faced in the game, but was eventually defeated by Crash who gained the Super Spin ability upon defeating him.

Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex

He also appears as a supporting character in Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex and an obstacle in some of the levels.

Crash Bandicoot 2: N-Tranced

N. Tropy serves as the main antagonist in Crash Bandicoot 2: N-Tranced. He kidnaps Coco, Crunch, and Fake Crash so his friend N. Trance can brainwash them into doing their bidding. However, he fails to realise that Fake Crash isn't the real Crash Bandicoot until the doppelgänger is defeated in battle. Tropy leaves N. Trance to try and stop Crash while he escapes to parts unknown. Only after collecting the Gems and Gem Shards in the game will Crash be able to fight him.

Crash Twinsanity

His next major appearance would be in Crash Twinsanity where he teamed up with Nitrus Brio, believing Crash knew the location of a treasure. The doctors fought Crash after he escaped N. Gin's battleship, but are both defeated by the bandicoot. Tropy reappears later with other villains in the Tenth Dimension before the final boss fight.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time

N Tropy returns as one of two primary antagonists for Crash Bandicoot 4 which takes place directly after the events of Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped. Trapped with Uka Uka and Dr. Cortex in the Bone Yard (a level from Crash Bandicoot 3), he and Uka Uka actively try to escape the portal. As N Tropy is arguing with Cortex about the chance to escape, Uka Uka with all his strength creates a Quantum rift (before passing out from exhaustion). Finally free, N Tropy encourages Cortex to leave Uka Uka behind and they set off to conquer the multi-dimensions.

In their next appearance, N Tropy and Cortex are seen creating a rift generator to gain access to all dimensions. After Cortex dismisses N Brio & N-Gin's projects, N Tropy sends them to travel to the Tranquility Falls Dimension & Hazardous Waste Dimension respectively warning them to anticipate Crash & his allies to stop them.

Following the defeat of Dr. Cortex in the 11th Dimension, N Tropy through a hologram betrays him revealing he never intended to just conquer the multiverse, but he with his new partner (his Female dimensional counterpart) will recreate the timeline where he is a god and where Cortex and all of his enemies were wiped from existence.

Once Crash and his allies gather all four Quantum masks, they infiltrate Bermugula's orbit where N Tropy and his dimensional counterpart order Nitrous Oxide to prevent their enemies from reaching the rift generator. Shortly afterwards the two N Tropys are flirting with each other (Much to Crash, Coco, Tawna, Nitrous Oxide, and Cortex's disgust and to Dingodile's amusement as they watch on screen). Later Tawna attempts to take the two doctors down on her own but is quickly defeated before Female N Tropy mocks Tawna about killing her dimension's Crash and Coco. The rest of Team Crash arrives but is quickly separated from a Quantum Rift. After Crash/Coco defeats N Tropy, Cortex attempts to mock Male N Tropy for betraying him (using N Tropy's very same words) before Dingodile and the Quantum Masks banish the two Doctor N Tropys into an unknown Quantum Rift leaving their fates unknown (Toys For Bob confirmed that Crash 4 events takes place in an alternate universe where only the original trilogy happened).

Spin-Off Games

Crash Team Racing

He also appeared in Crash Team Racing as a secret unlockable driver who could be obtained by beating his set records for Time Trials on each track.

Crash Nitro Kart

N. Tropy returns in Crash Nitro Kart . Again serving as an unlockable driver and a ghost for Time Trials. He is unlocked the same way as in CTR and is a part of Team Cortex.

Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled

N. Tropy returns again in the remaster for Crash Team Racing serving the same role he had in the original game. He is a Speed class driver.

Personality

Dr

Dr. Nefarious Tropy aka Dr. N. Tropy.

N. Tropy is an evil, smug, arrogant, and treacherous person who has an unhealthy obsession with time. His personality is in contrast to Cortex's childish and short-tempered personality. N. Tropy acts with a calm and collected demeanor, complete with a smooth British accent. His quotes in all of his appearances in racing games include time jokes and stereotypical British comments such as "Blimey!" or mentions of tea. In a deleted scene from Crash Twinsanity, N. Tropy is shown to spill his tea as he heard Moritz talking about riches. Tropy is also highly intelligent and manipulative, his technological breakthroughs arguably the most advanced of all of Uka's scientists, although the doctor must constantly maintain his time traveling technology to make sure it all runs like clockwork (to the point he apparently shows signs of obsession compulsion). Otherwise the results could be disastrous; as previously seen with his Time Twister machine when he was not around to take care of it.

Tropy always acts cool-headed, however, behind that coldness, he is shown to be more weak-minded and aggressive than he looks as soon as anyone starts to irritate him: he is very quick to get frustrated when anyone doesn't listen to him, things don’t go his way, or he repeatedly misses his target. As a result, he tires easily, which makes him vulnerable in a fight. Like Cortex, N. Tropy is also highly pompous, irritable, and foul-tempered, venting his frustrations at his associates or blaming them for his errors, something N. Trance was perfectly willing to call him out on, without fearing him.

Powers and Abilities

N. Tropy is highly intelligent and a bit of an engineer. As such, he can create highly advanced devices such as the Time Twister and a steam powered Time Machine that he wears like armor. With his TimeStaff and Time Machine Suit, N. Tropy is capable of manipulating matter, shifting time and emitting energy waves.

Trivia

  • During the development of Crash Twinsanty it seems that N. Tropy was originally meant to have a more prominent role as the secondary antagonist to Crash and Cortex. Tropy was going to lead a team with N. Brio, N. Gin, and N. Trance to get the treasure of the Evil Twins before Cortex did. There are removed levels from Wumpa Island and Twinsanity Island where Crash, Cortex, and Nina had to keep facing previous bosses again like frog N. Brio (along with Koala Kong) and N. Gin (who attacked Nina at the Uka Tree). N. Trance was going to get wounded by Evil Crash during the treasure hunt and stalking of Cortex's group. Out of all this, only a cutscene at the end of the game remains, where Cortex, Crash, and Nina faced N. Tropy, N. Brio, and N. Gin at the treasure chamber.
  • N. Tropy was going to serve as the main antagonist of the cancelled game Cortex Chaos, which was meant to be a sequel to Twinsanity, where Tropy gets back at Cortex by kicking him out of the league of evil scientists and replace him as the leader.
