S. Quentin Quale, better known as Dr. Satan, is the overarching antagonist of the 2003 horror film House of 1000 Corpses. Although he only appears briefly, he is still a central relevance to the plot of the film.
He was portrayed by Walter Phelan.
Biography[]
Past[]
Quale was a master surgeon, but he was completely insane. As an intern at Willows County Mental Hospital, he used his role to take his sadism out on inmates in the form of surgical torture and brain operations. His goal was to turn the inmates into a race of superhumans, but in the end they found his plans. Quale, who later became known to the press because of his cruel experiments as Dr. Satan, was caught by some villagers, dragged into the forest, sentenced to death in vigilante justice, and hung from a tree.
The next day, however, Dr. Satan's corpse disappeared, so that this curiosity became something of an urban legend of the region. In fact, Dr. Satan was still alive. The exact circumstances are unclear, but he continued his experiments in an underground cave system below the Firefly's farm. Every year on Halloween the Fireflys let down some victims through a well, on which Satan experimented from then on in order to make them superhumans; the successful experiments stayed with him as his henchmen. The failed experiments, which survived, remained in the cave system and lived there from then on. He was supported by Earl Firefly, who apparently himself was one of Dr. Satan's successful experiments.
House of 1000 Corpses[]
When it's Halloween again, two students, Jerry and Denise, are lowered down the well by the Fireflys. However, Denise can break free and only Jerry becomes delivered to Dr. Satan. Dr. Satan then begins to cut open Jerry's brain and perform an operation. But since he is extremely merciless and does not even drug Jerry, Jerry dies instantly on the operating table. At the same moment, Denise, who ran aimlessly through the corridors, also gets into the operating room. Dr. Satan notices this and calls Earl to catch Denise. Denise immediately fled, followed by Earl. Denise escapes Earl and flees to the surface, where she falls into the hands of Captain Spaulding and Otis. After this, they bring Denise to Dr. Satan, who then begins to operate on her.
The Devil's Rejects[]
Dr. Satan does not appear nor is mentioned, although he might've been either killed in the police shootout or was committed to a hospital, as shown in a deleted scene, where he kills a nurse while in a coma.
Trivia[]
- In the second part of the film series, The Devil's Rejects, another origin story of Dr. Satan presents. In this one is Dr. Satan the leader of a cult that briefly included Otis and Baby Firefly. Dr. Satan was also due to appear in this movie, but the plan was cut.
- The original plan was to have Grandpa Hugo as the real Dr. Satan, which was ultimately rejected because Rob Zombie found the idea to be too anti-climactic.
