Dr. Spam is a major antagonist in the Monica's Gang franchise.
He is the alter-ego of Professor Spada (Steven in the English version), a friendly computer technician who, when hit by electrical discharges projected by computers or just a strong blow to the head, becomes the evil Dr. Spam, a villain who is bent on world domination by using the internet and other modern technologies
Apperance[]
As Dr. Spam, he uses a white coat-style robes and violet gloves, his hair is purple and spiky, the same color as his beard. He has a huge nose and wears glasses with an “@” or green lines in the middle. His pants are black.
In Mauricio Presents Nº 8 – The Twelve Symbols of Christmas, he says he got sick of white because it was too “nice”, so he adopts a black outfit and purple belt but continues with purple gloves and removes the "@" from his glasses to fully adopt the characteristics. However, this outfit was never worn again.
As Professor Steven, his white coat is much more detailed and formal, more like a work outfit rather than a suit, his pants are still black, his beech features are less exaggerated, his hair and beard are brown and tidy and his glasses are square, making it possible to see his black pupils.
As MEGASPAM, his hair and beard are spikier, he now has large, bulky green armor that covers his torso, arms and legs, he again has black pants and now his gloves are also black.
Personality[]
While Steven is calm and moderate, his Spam side is lunatic, with ridiculously exaggerated approaches, conspiring at all times and always creating cybernetic challenges to test the children's skills, having fun with other people's misadventures. Spam has the power to physically dissolve into digital information to invade electronic systems and browse the internet like a virus, he has a fervent temperament and is easily irritated.
There are also many examples that show that despite being incredibly intelligent in terms of technology, he is very short-sighted when it comes to actual evil plans, as he either never thinks about his plans in the long term or leaves out very obvious flaws that lead to his many defeats
Although he started as a typical power-hungry villain, his desire to conquer the world has transitioned from that to a desire for respect, since he always fails in pretty pathetic ways due to his incompetency, he is seen as a joke by both the kids and his fellow villains, so nowadays he is desperate to be feared as a powerful supervillain.
Biography[]
He appeared for the first time in the comic Mônica Nº 233, from Editora Globo, in the story, Monica wanted to throw her bunny Sanson at Jimmy Five, but she missed and hit Prof. Spada by mistake, who was repairing her computer and thus got shocked and turned into the villain. Only Bloguinho's anti-spam program made him return to normal.
Ever since then, Dr. Spam became a fairly popular character and made multiple appearances throughout the series, acting as either the main antagonist of the story or a supporting antagonist, usually working for other villains.
However, his apperances are always very spaced out, usually there is a one to two year gap between stories where he is the main focus, which leads to many fans either thinking he's a forgotten character or forgetting about him themselves, which ended up blending into his personality and story, since nowadays not only Spam look for ways to takeover the world, he also seeks validation from the chilren and his fellow villains, who mostly see and treat him as a joke.
In Monica Adventures Spam is seen briefly in the 4 Magical Dimensions arc. There an alternative version of the character called MEGASPAM faces Jim Five in Tobor's dimension.
Only in Monica's Adventures Nº 21, 3ª Series would Spam be defeated once and for all after Steven manages to create a virtual reality to contain Spam in one of the BRASA's supercomputers.
Trivia[]
- Professor Steven and Dr. Spam are inspired by Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde from the novel Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
- Dr. Spam is considered Jimmy Five's archenemy, but that's mainly by technicality since Jimmy has faced Spam the most through the years, but neither of the two characters actually acknowledge this relationship, since Jimmy considers Spam too lame of a villain to be his archenemy.
- The fact that Spam appears so infrequently in the comics is frequently lampooned in his stories, with characters noting how long they haven't seen him or flat out not even remembering him.
