When facing a new challenge, sacrifices must be made...however, we were too impulsive...I have to start and influence the development of an unmanned probing robot.
~ Dr. Suka after sacrificing one of his assistants for Paradoxical Night extraction.

Dr. Suka is the main antagonist of the Junji Ito manga Black Paradox.

Formerly a surgeon and physician at a local hospital, Dr. Suka had decided to take it into his own hands to extract as much Paradoxical Night (or Paradoxical Night), ball-shaped jewels said to contain the souls from those that have lived eras ago, as he can, realizing that they can serve as a very efficient energy source. With the parodontite, he can end the city's energy crisis and be deemed a hero. When he is introduced, he takes various unethical measures in order to obtain these jewels, including the cultivation of the protagonists' body parts, which have previously displayed the Paradoxical Night from the afterlife, as well as sacrificing some of his own assistants.

Biography[]

After a fatal explosion in the city caused by shooting a paradoxical night with a gun, Baracchi visits Dr. Suka to get her birthmark removed. As that is happening, a wave of new patients are brought into the hospital due to the explosion, which had left them with bizzare ring-like burns all over their bodies. For one of the patients, Suka orders for the use of artificial skin.

Suka then meets one of the hospital's nurses, Marisou, at a coffee shop due to being absent for many of her recent shifts, due to her recent bouts of anxieties pertaining to death. Suka asks Marisou if she'd like to come to his villa, located in the mountains, and Marisou appears to agree afterwards. Baracchi and Taborou watch as the both of them leave the coffee shop, believing that Marisou had been lying about Piitan's death and the actual whereabouts of the Paradoxical Night.

When Marisou is brought to the villa, Suka starts attempting to flirt with her, and then proceeds to kiss her on the lips without warning. That night, Mariosou is awoken by her psychic abilities, and tries to search for Suka, only to find herself in a secret room littered with parodontite, with a swimming pool in the center of it.

When Marisou runs into Suka, he admits to her that he has been harvesting the parodontite after discovering the brain-dead body of Piitan still in the ambulance, which he had discovered after claiming to have been watching her silhouette transferring his brain dead-body to the hospital. There, he had discovered that Piitan's pylorus had acted as a gateway to the Spirit World, and has as a result began harvesting his stomach in the swimming pool in order to retrieve more of the precious jewels, despite knowing that Piitan was still alive.

Marisou hears a knock at the front door, and rushes up to find that Baracchi is there with copious amounts of Paradoxical Night coming out of her birthmark. This causes Mairsou to faint, where afterwards she wakes up, chained by her limbs to a metal hospital bed. In the meantime, Suka had finally completed surgery on Baracchi's face, where he removed her birthmark. He had found that even after removing the birthmark, the Paradoxical Night still emerged from it in large amounts.

A month later, Suka finally removes the bandages off of Baracchi's face, and when Taborou asks if they can leave the villa after believing their names have been cleared up following the explosion, Suka insists they stay longer. It is also revealed that after removing Baracchi's birthmark, he had stretched it out to an enormous size, and harvested it in a giant petri dish, much in the same way he harvested Piitan's stomach.

One day, Suka hires a new assistant, who was suffering from major monetary problems, to explore Piitan's stomach, putting him in a diving suit and ordering him to swim into the portal found in Piitan's pylorus, promising that he'll pay the man. When the assistant attempts to extract the Paradoxical Night, he only winds up as a gory, mangled-up, decaying corpse. Following from this, Baracchi and Taborou begin questioning Suka if these procedures are necessary, to which Suka replies that making such sacrifices are needed in order to make world-changing developments.

He then suggests that resources should be used in order to create a probing robot in order to extract the stones, to which he explains that his primary motive is to extract the stones, realizing that they can be used as efficient sources of energy, believing that this can serve as a benefit for Japan, as it has been running low on energy resources.

While Dr. Suka's ambitions led to Japan entering a new age of prosperity, Marisou prophesized that in time humanity would learn that utilising the Paradoxical Night stones of the afterlife would lead to great suffering, as humankind was never meant to have access to the energy of their own souls. The use of Paradoxical Night was eventually brought to a halt before humans would go extinct, but many were fated to die before that point.

Appearance[]

Suka appears as a handsome young man with medium-length black hair.

Personality[]

On the surface, Dr. Suka appears to be a reasonable, calm, level-headed, and respectable man. Behind closed doors, however, he is shown to be manipulative, conniving, and seductive around women.

Whenever he finds a woman that he is into, he always invites them into his villa, and flirts with them, which sometimes includes touching them or kissing them inappropriately without their consent. He shows that afterwards, he will occasionally stalk the women that he has hooked up with, as evidenced when he told Mairsou that he thought he was watching her silhouette moving Piitan's brain-dead body into the ambulance. Suka also shows that holds little regard for the feelings of others when it comes to accomplishing his goals.

Trivia[]

  • "Suka" comes from a word from a proto Fillipino language for "puke" or "vomit". This is meant to mirror how Piitan had first brought the stones into existence by vomiting them up, as his pylorus had become a gateway to the afterlife.
  • In the 2022 VIZ edition of the manga Black Paradox, the main antagonist is referred to as "Dr. Suga". Earlier translations of the manga, however, referred to him as "Dr. Suka".
