| ~ Victor Frankenstein regarding his lack of forethought when it came to his experiment. |
Dr. Victor von Frankenstein is the titular main antagonist of Guillermo del Toro’s 2025 film adaption of the 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus by the late Mary Shelley.
He’s an egotistical and delusional scientist who, upon his mother's death, experiences what he believes to be a vision from the Dark Angel of Death, inspiring him to recreate life. After being rejected by multiple investors and universities, arms-dealer Henrich Harlander reaches out to him, offering the mad doctor resources with which to conduct his experiments; this later backfires on both of them, however, as Frankenstein ends up despising his own creation and Harlander is denied his chance to extend his longevity.
He was portrayed by Oscar Isaac, who also played Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse, Blue Jones in Sucker Punch, Laurent LeClaire in In Secret and Nathan Bateman in Ex Machina.
Personality[]
Throughout the duration of the film. He is proclaimed by many as brilliant, who was capable of naming every organ in the human body. With this knowledge, he was curious to know more of the human body, specifically with death as this fascination with it made him more preoccupied with him experiencing life itself. However many have come to label him as a very self-centered man, filled with ego and pride which led serval people including his brother and love-interest, to fear him and avoid him.
As a child, he was strongly attached to his mother, which bordered on obsession; her death is what provokes his eventual obsession with conquering death itself. He had the habit of drinking milk, which seemed to be an indicator of his obsessive love for his late mother. In contrast, he felt distant from his father, and resented him for his domineering and abusive demeanor; Victor considered himself exceptional, yet his father never felt he was good enough, which fed into his hatred. Ironically, upon successfully creating his creature, Victor would end up adopting his late father's cruelty and callousness for his own "child."
