Dr. Z (Dr. ソーノイダ Dr. Sonoida) is the main antagonist of the Dinosaur King franchise.
He is a brilliant, yet eccentric scientist who possesses an insatiable desire to reclaim the dinosaur cards that have been scattered across the globe. His ultimate ambition is to reign as the undisputed king of the dinosaurs. However, his grand plans take an unexpected turn when he experiences a profound betrayal from his once loyal comrade, Seth. This betrayal prompts a dramatic shift in Dr. Z's mindset and he undergoes a transformation, seemingly altering his nefarious ways. In an astonishing twist, Dr. Z decides to align himself with the D-Team, an organization committed to a noble cause, during the second season of their thrilling adventure as a result of the emergence of the much more dangerous Space Pirates who are working alongside his former assistant.
He was voiced by the late Tetsuo Gotō in the original Japanese dubbed version, and by Eric Stuart in the 4Kids English dubbed version.
Personality[]
Dr. Z, the leader of the Alpha Gang, is a peculiar and self-centered individual with a sinister side. His ultimate ambition is to become the revered "Dinosaur King," driven by an unwavering obsession with all things related to dinosaurs. Demonstrating a short fuse and an obstinate nature, Dr. Z rarely lends an ear to opposing viewpoints, unless they happen to praise him. Nevertheless, he often adopts these ideas as his own, refusing to acknowledge their origin. Taking no responsibility for his actions, he initially shows no remorse for the harm he inflicts upon Rex and his parents. Additionally, Dr. Z displays a frugal and possessive nature, unwilling to spend extravagantly and claiming ownership over everything he desires. Even when he comes across Rex's dinosaur tooth necklace, he refuses to splurge on it. Despite attempting to assert his authority over his maid, Helga, a single stern glance from her quickly silences him, highlighting his easily intimidated demeanor. Despite his love for dinosaurs he is sometimes shown to be afraid of them. In addition to this, he’s also cowardly often running away or having others shield him.
During his younger days, he possessed a reputation for being a compassionate and benevolent individual. This was evident in his decision to welcome the Alpha Trio and Rod and Laura's father into his home, despite their orphaned status. Remarkably, he raised them as his own children, even though there was no record of him ever having been married. This selfless act demonstrated his kindness and generosity. Over the years, this inherent trait of his continues to manifest itself whenever he comes across one of his Secret Dinosaurs. Having taken on the responsibility of raising each of them, albeit sometimes not to the best of his abilities, he mistakenly anticipates a reciprocated love and joy upon their reunion. Similarly, this same characteristic takes hold whenever his grandchildren, Rod and Laura, find themselves in distress.
Biography[]
History[]
Living in the future, Dr. Z's early life was marked by a series of remarkable events that shaped his destiny. His journey began with the adoption of the Alpha Trio, three genetically enhanced dinosaurs, and becoming intertwined with the lives of Rod and Laura's father, creating a unique family dynamic.
As time progressed, Dr. Z found himself drawn into the enigmatic world of Dr. Ancient's groundbreaking time travel mission. The mission, set in motion to rescue dinosaurs from the Mesozoic era, became a turning point in Dr. Z's life. On a fateful Christmas Day in 2127, he embarked on a journey to the past, setting the stage for unforeseen consequences.
Once in the Mesozoic era, Dr. Z's actions took a dark turn. He began manipulating the collected dinosaurs, orchestrating conflicts among them for his own amusement. Secretly, he delved into the creation of Move Cards, a technology that granted dinosaurs enhanced abilities, further complicating the timeline. Driven by his insatiable thirst for power, he raised his own super-powerful Secret Dinosaurs, adding a layer of complexity to the already intricate web of time-travel dynamics.
The chaos escalated when Dr. Z interfered with an attempt to return to the future. His disruptive actions led to the catastrophic crash of the timeship in the present day, scattering Move Cards across the world. This unforeseen event had far-reaching consequences, as the unleashed dinosaurs and their enhanced abilities posed a threat to the delicate balance of the timeline.
As the aftermath of his actions unfolded, Dr. Z found himself entangled in a race against time to undo the damage he had caused. The scattered Move Cards became sought-after artifacts, coveted by various factions vying for control over the powerful technology. Dr. Z's role in the unfolding drama became increasingly complex as he navigated the consequences of his choices and faced the repercussions of disrupting the fabric of time.
Season 1[]
Dr. Z, who is based at the man-made island named Zeta Point, typically initiates each episode by assigning the Alpha Trio the task of retrieving the latest dinosaur card that has been activated. While the Trio carries out their mission, Dr. Z remains in his laboratory, engrossed in inventing various contraptions, some of which are relevant to their mission while others are not. He also spends his time using dinosaur bone chants to locate the next card in advance or expressing his dissatisfaction with the Trio's failures. In the earlier episodes, Dr. Z busies himself with recreating Move Cards for the Trio's use and appears to be the mastermind behind their vehicles and other technological devices, although these creations are often designed for one-time use only. Despite his technological expertise, Dr. Z lacks knowledge about the inner workings of the robotic Helga, whom he built using an online kit in the future, and is unable to repair her when she malfunctions, as seen in the episode "Planes, Trains and Dinosaurs".
The D-Team has very limited interactions with him due to his frequent absence from the field. In fact, their first encounter with him occurs when they unintentionally trespass onto Zeta Point using Alpha's Zeta Point device. However, there are rare instances where he does join his team, particularly when one of the Secret Dinosaurs he raised makes an appearance (episodes 14, 28, & 34). In these situations, he eagerly attempts to reunite with the dinosaurs, but they often choose to run away or engage in conflict instead. Additionally, he takes charge of the team during important or relatively easy missions, such as retrieving the Dinomond Amber from New York in The Big Apple Grapple or dealing with the Doppelganger Alpha Gang in Double or Nothing. While his usual instruction to the Alpha Trio is to summon their dinosaurs, there are occasions when he himself utilizes an Alpha Scanner, typically summoning Terry and occasionally Spiny.
In Metal Imbalance, an interesting turn of events occurs. Tank experiences an unfortunate incident while handling a boulder containing precious Alpha Metal ore. As he cracks open the boulder, a portion of the ore unexpectedly falls, and in a reflexive action, Tank catches it. However, this sudden movement causes him to strain his back, resulting in a painful injury. Consequently, Tank is confined to his bed, unable to participate in any activities until the events of A Kyoto Caper unfold. Surprisingly, during this mission to Kyoto, Tank miraculously springs back to life and eagerly joins the team. Some speculate that he may have fully recovered from his back injury earlier, but intentionally prolonged his bedridden state for personal reasons. Nevertheless, Tank's sudden recovery allows him to partake in the adventure, not only to accompany his teammates but also to catch a glimpse of the captivating geisha. Well, at least that's the official reason. Deep down, his true motivation lies in the pursuit of the elusive last dinosaur card.
As revealed in the first season's finale arc, it is uncovered that Dr. Z and the Alpha Gang originate from a future time period. Utilizing the advanced technology of the Backlander, a hidden timeship located beneath Zeta Point, they have managed to travel back to the era of dinosaurs. Originally, they were part of a team led by Dr. Ancient and Dr. Cretacia, who were the true parents of Rex. These brilliant scientists had a noble goal of saving the dinosaurs by utilizing the powerful Element Stones they had discovered. As the time for Ancient and Cretacia to return to the future approaches, Dr. Z becomes suspicious of their intentions. Fearful that they may remove him from the mission, he teams up with Seth and betrays his former mentors. In a shocking act of mutiny, Dr. Z ejects Ancient and Cretacia from the Backlander while it is in mid-flight. Fortunately, Jonathan steps in to protect Rex, inadvertently causing the Element Stones to become dislodged in the process. This unforeseen event leads to the Backlander crashing in the present time, with the dinosaur cards being scattered across the globe. However, during their mission, Dr. Z's ambition takes a dark turn. He develops Move Cards and begins to manipulate the dinosaurs, forcing them to engage in battles against each other. His ultimate desire is to establish his own dominion, a dinosaur kingdom under his rule. This treacherous act goes against the original intentions of Ancient and Cretacia, who only sought to preserve and protect these magnificent creatures. To add even more complexity, baby Rex and Jonathan find themselves landing in the timeline 12 years earlier than intended. This twist of fate sets the stage for an exciting journey filled with adventure, as Rex and Jonathan must navigate the challenges of the present while also uncovering the truth about their origins and the fate of the dinosaurs.
During the course of the story arc, Seth unexpectedly turns against Dr. Z before the latter has a chance to betray him and claim credit for his groundbreaking work, just as he had done with Dr. Ancient. This act leads to Seth taking charge and forcefully expelling Dr. Z and the Alpha Gang from their base at Zeta Point. Reluctantly, Dr. Z finds himself forming an unlikely alliance with the D-Team, as they join forces to confront the imminent threat posed by Seth's newly created Black T-Rex, which he plans to unleash upon Sanjo City. In a twist of fate, Rex comes to Dr. Z's rescue, saving him from the clutches of the monstrous creature. Deeply remorseful for his past actions, Dr. Z takes the opportunity to extend a heartfelt apology to Rex for the harm he caused to the young boy's parents. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Dr. Z puts his knowledge to use by summoning additional dinosaurs to form a small army to combat the Black T-Rex. Together with Terry, Saurophaganax, and Daspletosaurus, these summoned dinosaurs join forces with the D-Team's Secret Dinosaurs. In an attempt to contribute further to the battle, Dr. Z tries to ride a Pachycephalosaurus, only to find himself unexpectedly thrown off the creature's back. As he plummets through the air, his Alpha Scanner is snatched away by Dr. Taylor, while the Alpha Trio swiftly rescues him in Reese's aircraft. From that point on, Dr. Z plays no further active role in the ensuing battle.
After successfully saving the day, it is discovered that Drs. Ancient and Cretacia have been secretly kept in stasis on the Backlander all along. It is unclear how they ended up there, but it is speculated that Dr. Z may have rescued them before the crash, possibly due to hidden guilt. Another theory suggests that they may have returned from the future on their own, hinted at by a later recap intro. However, despite their rescue, Dr. Z and the Alpha Trio are punished for their past misbehavior and are confined to their quarters for the return journey to the future. Unfortunately, their punishment is short-lived as they are immediately faced with an attack from the Spectral Space Pirates. The Pirates then proceed to kidnap the parents of the D-Team, leaving Dr. Z with no choice but to agree to repair the damaged Backlander and follow them. In an ironic twist, his attempt to repair the ship goes awry, causing them to be thrown into the timestream without any control over their destination. This mishap leaves Rod and Laura stranded in the present while the rest crash-land in the Cretaceous period. Without wasting any time, Dr. Z reverts to his evil ways and commands Terry to attack the wild dinosaurs. However, Terry is defeated by Chomp and the other wild dinosaurs, and the Alpha Gang find themselves trapped and outnumbered by Ace and Paris. As if things couldn't get any worse, they are forced to retreat from the impending meteor that threatens their very existence.
Season 2[]
During the upcoming season, the focus on Dr. Z and the Alpha Gang diminishes as their involvement becomes less significant to the overall plot. Instead, they find themselves entangled in various side adventures, keeping them occupied and away from the main storyline. However, it is worth noting that Dr. Z's presence is more pronounced this season compared to the previous one, as he frequently ventures outside the Backlander, often joining forces with the Alpha Trio on their individual quests.
After witnessing the impressive Spectral Armor of Torvosaurus in the episode "Ancient Roman Holiday," he becomes determined to develop effective strategies to counter this powerful armor throughout the Ancient Rome arc. This leads to the protagonist devising innovative and improved Moves for the D-Team in the subsequent episode titled "Desperately Seeking Spartacus," enabling them to confront their adversaries with greater strength and skill. Furthermore, the protagonist introduces a groundbreaking invention known as the Element Boosters in the episode "There's No Place Like Rome," which bestows the DinoTector Armor upon the dinosaurs, thus enhancing their abilities and providing them with a formidable defense in their ongoing battles.
As "Whitebeard," he finds himself embroiled in heated disputes with the formidable British Navy, engaging in spirited verbal duels that test his wit and resourcefulness. Ever the rebellious spirit, he even resorts to pulling off the ship's steering wheel during a treacherous storm, demonstrating his refusal to conform to the norms of the high seas. With his quick thinking and strategic prowess, he skillfully utilizes the power of Terry, his trusted ally, to triumphantly defeat Gabbro's mighty Edmontonia using the awe-inspiring Ultimate Fire attack. However, their triumph is short-lived as the ever-watchful Helga insists they return to the safety of their base to apply sunscreen, ensuring their well-being under the scorching Caribbean sun.
In Ancient China, Z is suffering from a seasickness caused by time travel, forcefully pulls along the Alpha Trio in pursuit of a dinosaur. In their reckless chase, they accidentally collide with Foolscap's ship, leading to a disastrous crash. This incident sets off a series of events: the locals mistake them for wizards and share with them the legend of the Fruit of Eternal Life. However, their true identities are revealed, and they are forced to flee from the angry townsfolk (known as Four Part Harmony). Later on, they mistakenly consume unripe peaches, believing them to be the coveted Fruit of Eternal Life, and are consequently mistaken for Sanzo Hoshi and his companions (Dr. Z taking on the role of an older student). Unfortunately, their actions inadvertently bring underground lava instead of water to the village crops, resulting in their hasty departure from the town (known as Elements of Surprise). Determined to make amends, they decide to impersonate Sanzo and his company intentionally (with Dr. Z assuming the role of Sanzo this time). However, their ruse is quickly discovered when Dr. Z becomes trapped between two large rocks, his cape acting as evidence of his deception (known as Monk in the Middle). In The Third Cosmos Stone, the real Sanzo arrives and pleads for Dr. Z's release. As his cape slips free, Dr. Z plummets into what appears to be Lotus Land, the mythical home of the Fruit of Eternal Life. Unfortunately, his attempt to reach the largest peach ends in a fall, leading him to unexpectedly land among the Alpha Trio.
In the ancient land of Japan, there exists a peculiar situation where an individual is confined to a ship against his will. This unfortunate circumstance arises due to his refusal to consume a bowl of mush that was diligently prepared by a woman named Helga. Faced with this predicament, the distressed individual seeks solace by assigning a task to the Alpha Trio, requesting them to acquire a fresh dinosaur card in order to alleviate his suffering. However, fate has a different plan in store for them, as their quest for the desired card takes an unexpected turn when they encounter a group of bears who relentlessly pursue them.
In the ancient land of Persia, Dr. Z finds himself embarking on a daring adventure alongside the Alpha Trio. Together, they venture into the dark and mysterious treasure cave of the infamous 40 Thieves. However, their thieving escapades are abruptly interrupted when the Thieves catch them red-handed. To further complicate matters, Dr. Z, a cunning individual, finds himself imprisoned in the palace dungeon alongside the Sultan. This imprisonment becomes a means of leverage for Zayid, forcing the Alpha Trio into another confrontation with the D-Team. However, hope shines through when Aladdin, mistaking Dr. Z for the Sultan, comes to his rescue. As chaos ensues with a fierce battle between dinosaurs causing the water tower to collapse and flood the dungeon, our protagonist and the Alpha Trio almost manage to obtain the coveted Red Cosmos Stone. Alas, their triumph is short-lived as Helga, a persistent character, intervenes and drags them back to reality, forcing them to attend to the mundane task of cleaning their dusty clothes. In the following episode, a devious character named Zayid forces our heroes to turn against their own friends, the D-Team. Their mission? To capture Princess Zahrah. Despite their best efforts, the Alpha Trio fails to complete their task, leaving them in a precarious situation.
During the Renaissance Paris Arc, Dr. Z whose identity remains undisclosed, cunningly dispatches the Alpha Trio on a mission to procure the highly coveted Green Cosmos Stone. Under the pretense of a simple errand to purchase French bread, this enigmatic figure secretly seeks to harness the immense power of the Cosmos Stones, their ultimate goal being the attainment of the title of Dinosaur King. However, once this task is completed, this mysterious character seemingly fades into the background, only to resurface in the later episode titled "All For One." It is then revealed that in a surprising twist, this individual had actually adopted the Alpha Trio as young children, alongside the enigmatic father of Rod and Laura.
In the aftermath, he declares himself the Dinosaur King, ruling over all the dinosaurs that he and his team have saved from the ship. However, his role takes an unexpected turn when he is entrusted with Dr. Drake's giant needle, which is used to care for the dinosaurs. Alongside the Alpha Gang, Seth, Rex, and the Ancients, he is unexpectedly transported back to the future. Unfortunately, in their quest to retrieve the Black Cosmos Stone in The Search for the Last Cosmos Stone, they are faced with a volcanic eruption that prevents them from obtaining it. Nevertheless, our protagonist manages to retrieve the Stone from a mammoth skeleton later on. In a "heroic" act, he agrees to become the Dinosaur King by wielding the Stone, with the intention of using its power to rescue the parents of the D-Team. Meanwhile, Max takes the Stone to negotiate a trade for their parents' freedom. In a bid to combat the combined power of the Cosmos Stones, our protagonist suggests combining the Stone Plates. This enables the other members of the team to infiltrate the Dark Pterosaur, defeat the Space Pirates' altered dinosaurs, and ultimately locate the Space Pirate Ship. However, our protagonist becomes instantly enthralled by the abundance of dinosaur life on the ship, momentarily distracting him from the task at hand. Fortunately, they succeed in saving the universe. In the final arc of the story, our protagonist becomes furious with Seth upon his return, but his anger is quickly diverted by the adorable gel chibi dinosaur Seth brings along. Determined to rescue his friends Rod and Laura, he fearlessly dives into the alternate present filled with plants and insects, known as The Forestfire Effect. However, the group realizes that they forgot to bring an Alpha Scanner, which is essential for their mission. Fortunately, Helga comes to their rescue by saving them from a giant mantis. With Seth back on their team in the Clash for the Cosmos Stones, Dr. Z creates a new Move for Max to defeat Cryolophosaurus. However, he protests when the D-Team suggests trading the retrieved Cosmos Stones once again. Upon returning to the present, our protagonist engages in a chase with Seth, who has stolen the Cosmos Stones. Unfortunately, their pursuit leads them into the D-Lab, where Armatus destroys it with Spectral Stinger. Thankfully, Helga manages to pull our him out from the wreckage in the following episode, which sets the stage for the finale, Fate of the Cosmos.

Trivia[]
- In the first episode, there is a hilarious scene where Terry, the mischievous pet of Dr. Z, bites a hole in his pants, revealing a unique and unexpected piece of underwear. This underwear is none other than a pair with a picture of Helga's face printed all over it. Helga, who is presumably not a fan of this particular fashion choice, expresses her disapproval of the placement of her face on Dr. Z's undergarments.
- However, in the Japanese version, this particular underwear is absent and instead, it reveals the exposed buttocks of Dr. Z.
- In the past, he had a pet turtle named "Sue", and interestingly enough, this experience influenced him to also give one of his Deinonychus dinosaurs the same name "Sue".
- Dr. Z has a strong affinity for sauerkraut. This peculiar preference of his is highlighted in episode 19, where he curiously contemplates whether the museum canteen offers this tangy delight. However, it is in episode 43 that Dr. Z's love for sauerkraut reaches new heights, as he willingly consents to consuming Helga's concoction of sauerkraut and chili broth. Despite the added intensity of spiciness, Dr. Z perseveres and ultimately triumphs by consuming every last drop of the peculiar mixture.
