The Dragonbat is a minor antagonist of the 2012 horror/comedy film The Cabin in the Woods. It is one of the many Monsters created by the Ancient Ones for the Organization, in order to punish and kill the young.

He appeared on the betting board, but no one voted for him.

Its vocal sound effects were provided by Dane A. Davis.

Physical Description[]

The Dragon Bat is a giant dragon-bat hybrid with fragmented wings and red scales on each side of its body, and a mouth divided into three parts. It is one of the most dangerous monsters in the facility.

It can fly at high speeds and emits a deafening screech.

It has an uncanny sense of smell, as it was able to track Donald the Intern while he was hiding in a room during the purge.

Appearances[]

The Dragonbat was created by the Ancients for the American branch of the Organization to punish and kill young sacrifices. Although unconfirmed, it is believed that the object that summons it is a bat's tooth.

A dragonbat is seen flying erratically in its cubic prison during the scene where all the monsters belonging to the organization are shown. It is one of the first monsters released during the first wave of the system purge, where it immobilizes a security member and then slams him into the ground to devour him.

Later, Dragon Ball breaks through the control room window where Marty and Dana were hiding, forcing them to escape. While Dana and Marty were escaping, a scientist collides with Dana. While he warns them that the north exit is blocked, Dragon Bat comes out and grabs him, slams him against the wall, then eats him and flies away, passing by American Slow-Walking Creepy Girl. After this, he is not seen again throughout the film.

Inspiration[]

The Dragonbat is very similar to the main monster in the Stephen King short story and film Graveyard Shift. A gigantic, mutant bat that savages and devours men alive. It could also be a reference to the hybrid animal creatures that appear in some monster movies, such as Sharktopus, Dinocroc and Bippy (caterpillar/dog) from House 2: the Second Story.

curiosities[]

  • Dragon Bat was originally going to be a Pterodactyl, but was eventually replaced by the design seen in the film. The reason for the change is unknown; this is known thanks to the making-of, which shows an early scene of the system purge.
  • This one, along with the killer robot, is one of the monsters that received a redesign.
