Mighty, INDEED!
~ Proletius

Proletius is the secondary antagonist of the third Gloryhammer album, "Legends from Beyond the Galactic Terrorvortex". He was originally a paladin and great hero of light, before he was killed and corrupted by the evil wizard Zargothrax and transformed into a deathknight.

Proletius is portrayed by the band's guitarist, Paul Templing.

History[]

Zargothrax: Grandmaster Proletius, dispatch your knights of evil to slaughter more peasants in Auchtermuchty!
Proletius: As you command, Lord Zargothrax. Deathknights of Crail, TO BATTLE!
~ From Masters of the Galaxy

Long ago, in the distant future, Proletius was a great hero who fought on behalf of the Intergalactic Great Empire of Fife, as grandmaster of the holy knights of Crail. He was responsible for helping to defeat Zargothrax in 992 AD, then for maintaining the evil wizard's frozen prison, and after being revived in 1992 AD, he fought Zargothrax once again.

Following, Zargothrax's defeat in 1992, a wormhole opened in space and time, allowing Zargothrax to use his last amount of strength to go back in time to before everything had started, to 10 years before the day when the hero Dundax would destroy Zargothrax' home and set him on the path of evil. Zargothrax quickly set about conquering the world which, at this time, had no heroes to defend it.

With that, Zargothrax had erased the bloodline of his arch-nemesis, Angus McFife, but he would still need to deal with Proletius and the Knights of Crail. Zargothrax chose not to simply kill the paladin as a child the way he had previously done with this world's version of the hero prince Dundax. Instead, he allowed Proletius to grow into a mighty paladin before challenging him. Zargothrax stabbed Proletius in the heart with the Knife of Evil. The knife's anti-telharsic power corrupted his body and soul, changing him into an evil undead.

With Proletius' help, Zargothrax killed the rest of the Knights of Crail and converted them into undead as well, along with the giant eagles that served as their mounts. Zargothrax allowed Proletius to continue leading the now-undead knights, serving as Zargothrax' top general and enforcer. Zargothrax regularly sent Proletius on missions to slaughter peasants. Whether these missions were only intended to sew terror, or to accomplish some other goal is unknown.

In 992 AD, the Terrorvortex opened once again and Angus McFife XIII appeared from it, seeking to end Zargothrax' reign over this world, only to discover that his magic hammer had no power in this new dimension. Angus traveled to repower the Hammer of Glory, in the process meeting up with Ralathor, the leader of the anti-Zargothrax resistance. With the newly empowered hammer, and Ralathor's flagship the DSS Hootsforce, they confronted Zargothrax in the middle of godhood ritual. Proletius was sent out to face the heroes, but before he could even enter battle, he and his death knights were immediately destroyed by the DSS Hootsforce's missiles of nuclear justice.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Immortality: Even as a human, Proletius was ridiculously long-lived. He was canonically 52 when he fought Zargothrax in Tales From the Kingdom of Fife, and lived to the age of 140. As an undead, Dreadlord Proletius was beyond mortality, and would not have died of old age had he not been destroyed.
  • Durability: In Return to the Kingdom of Fife, the living Proletius was at the center of the 50-megaton nuclear blast that destroyed Dundee and survived, suffering only permanent scarring from it. It's safe to assume that the undead Proletius had the same durability as his living counterpart, if not more, and that Ralathor's missiles were simply far more powerful than 50 megatons.
  • Swordsmanship: Proletius was widely reknowned as the greatest warrior in the world, both as a human and as an undead.
  • Eagle Riding: The Knights of Crail's great claim to fame is their giant eagles, which they ride into battle. As a death knight, Proletius had the eagles changed into undead monsters as well.
