Zordonicus: Do not challenge me! There is one more test of courage that must be passed. One of your friends must be selected by you to face the dreaded Drill Master.
Adam: My friends? I can't do that.
Zordonicus: Then I cannot help you and Mondo will rule the Earth forever.
Adam: What am I going to do? What would Tommy do?
Zordonicus: Tommy? Mwa ha. An excellent choice. Mwa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
Adam: No! Zordonicus, I didn't mean to! Tommy!
~ Zordonicus forcing one of the Rangers to fight the Drill Master.

The Drill Master is the Drill-themed monster of the Machine Empire and a supporting antagonist in Power Rangers Zeo. He serves as the secondary antagonist of the episode "It Came from Angel Grove," a supporting antagonist in the episode "A Golden Homecoming" and a minor antagonist in "Mondo's Last Stand."

He is voiced by Dan Woren who was previously the voice of the Hydro Contaminators also in Zeo and is later the voice of Medicon in Power Rangers Time Force as well as both Onikage and providing the second and most recurring voice of Zen-Aku in Power Rangers Wild Force six years later. Outside of Power Rangers, Woren is best known as Jagi in Fist of the North Star Caster in Fate/Zero, Shuji Ikutsuki in Persona, Colonel Killing in Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket and Rudol von Stroheim in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

Biography[]

Before he appeared, a destroyed shell of the Drill Master is scrapped and thrown in the Machine Empire's scrapheap where it is seen when pieces of machinery form the Defector although the Drill Master's shell does not fuse with him.

Whilst studying for a test, Adam ends up falling asleep and waking up in a strange world where the other Power Rangers have became weird parodies of classic movie monsters. After the encounter with a witch-like Kat, Adam is transported to a labratory where he meets Zordonicus but the wizard refuses to turn things back to normal until one of Adam's friends is chosen to fight the Drill Master. Adam chooses Tommy who is morphed and teleported there, encountering the Drill Master and a Quadrafighter. Although Tommy is easily overwhelmed by the Drill Master's titular drill and buried under a pile of rocks, he breaks free and gets the two to accidentally shoot each other; crippling the Quadrafighter and wounding the Drill Master. Equipping his Zeo V Power Sword, Tommy is able to defeat the monster by stabbing him in the head wound and the Drill Master is destroyed immediately after when the Quadrafighter falls on top of him and explodes. Although Zordonicus then tries to destroy Adam with more monsters, Adam is abruptly woken up by Kat and Tommy as this entire experience has been a dream.

Later on, after Trey of Triforia transfers his Gold Ranger powers to Jason Scott to deny them to Mondo, the Machine King executes his ultimate plan; recreating an army of past monsters (including the Drill master) and upgrading them with the Neo-Plutonium Armour. The new and improved monsters are much stronger than they were before and are completely immune to the Rangers' weapons with the ultimate mission of destroying the Zeo Megazord.

The dream version of the Drill Master is recalled along with Punch-A-Bunch, Main Drain, the Leaky Faucet and the Somnibot as monsters that fought the Zeo Rangers and lost. Frustrated with his constant past defeats, and prompted by Queen Machina's comment that they lacked his particular cunning, Mondo decides to destroy the Zeo Rangers himself only to be defeated by the Super Zeo Megazord.

Personality[]

The Drill Master was a ruthless and violent monster loyal to both Zordonicus and King Mondo that would stop at nothing to destroy his enemies. Like many other monsters, he relentlessly taunted and mocked Tommy; especially after a Quadrafighter joined him in battle and considered shooting Tommy from both sides fair. However, his own arrogance was ultimately his undoing as he willingly put himself in a Quadrafighter's crossfire to shoot Tommy; not anticipating Zeo Ranger V would flip out of the way and cause the machines to shoot each other.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Durability: The Drill Master survived being shot by a Quadrafighter relatively unscathed.
  • Sight: The Drill Master could see despite lacking eyes.
  • Speech: The Drill Master could speak despite lacking a mouth.
  • Drilling: The Drill Master could spin its drill and use it to burrow through and underground.
    • Drill Attack: The Drill Master could spin his drill and lunge with it to try to impale his enemies with enough force to make the ground shake and knock down Tommy. A direct hit from it sent Tommy flying into the air for dozens of feet.
  • Sliding: When spinning his drill, the Drill Master could slide forwards into the enemy.
  • Fireball Blasts: The Drill Master could spew orange fireballs from the cannon on his right arm. These could cause massive explosions, knock Tommy down, sending him flying several feet into the air, make rocks bury him and cripple a Quadrafighter.
  • Energy Deflection: The Drill Master's drill could spin fast enough to harmlessly deflect away the Advanced Zeo Laser Pistol's lasers.

Weaknesses[]

  • Head Wound: After being shot by a Quadrafighter, the Drill Master gained a sparking wound atop its head that, when hit by Tommy's Zeo V Power Sword, crippled him.

Arsenal[]

  • Drill: The Drill Master repeatedly tried to impale Tommy with his massive drill.
  • Fists: The rebuilt Drill Master assaulted Super Zeozord IV with his fists.

Quotes[]

Your friend has chosen you to fight me to the finish. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
~ The Drill Master's first words when confronting Tommy in the Angel Grove Quarry.
Hey, two against one. Good odds.
~ The Drill Master cornering Tommy with a Quadrafighter and his last words.

Trivia[]

  • The Drill Master was originally the very first monster in Ohranger. Due to his very limited screen-time in Ohranger's first episode, the first monster in Zeo became Staroid and the Drill Master was relegated to a later dream sequence episode.
