~ A goatherd from Slaver's Bay describing Drogon's murder of his young daughter. |
Drogon, also known as The Winged Shadow, is a supporting character in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and its television adaptation, Game of Thrones. He is one of the three dragons that were birthed by Daenerys Targaryen in Essos and is named after her late husband, Khal Drogo.
Drogon is the largest of the three and is also the most aggressive of all of them. Drogon appears as a major protagonist in Daenerys' chapters in four of the ASOIAF novels but becomes a supporting antagonist in A Dance with Dragons. In season 8 of the HBO adaptation Game of Thrones, he became the last living dragon in the known world after his brothers Rhaegal and Viserion were killed by the Night King and Euron Greyjoy, respectively.
Biography[]
A Game of Thrones[]
During the wedding feast of Daenerys and Khal Drogo, Magister Illyrio Mopatis gives the former three petrified dragon eggs as a wedding gift. Drogon's egg is as black as the midnight sea, with ripples and swirls of colored scarlet.
Much later, using Mirri Maz Duur's knowledge of bringing new life by making someone give life, Daenerys places Drogon's egg along with the eggs of Vision and Rhaegal on the funeral pyre of Drogo, who had fallen into a vegetative state under Mirri. After Drogo's body was cremated and Mirri was burned alive for her actions, Drogon hatched from his egg along with his two brothers, as if through a miracle. When Ser Jorah Mormont and the remaining Dothraki saw the three living dragons, their loyalty to Daenerys grew stronger.
A Clash of Kings[]
Drogon perched on his mother's shoulder when she arrived at the city of Qarth. The city's inhabitants immediately began marveling at Daenerys' three dragons upon her arrival.
When Daenerys received news of the death of King Robert I Baratheon, Drogon responded with a hiss, and he let out pale smoke that rose into his mother's face. Daenerys expressed satisfaction that the man who sought to kill her and her brother is now dead.
Drogon accompanies Daenerys when she arrives at the House of the Undying, the headquarters of Quartheen Warlocks, as she seeks an audience with the chief warlocks, the Undying Ones. He reacts to the visions that Daenerys is suddenly receiving. When Quartheen warlock Pyat Pree tells Daenerys to follow him, Drogon, sensing that it is not the real Pyat Pree but only an illusion, disobeys the warlock's orders.
In the House of the Undying's great hall, when the Undying Ones offered her knowledge and magical weapons in sweet voices, Drogon, sensing that it was an illusion, jumped from Daenerys' shoulder and pointed to a door made of wood and ebony, causing his mother to abandon the Undying One's offerings. In a dark chamber, when Daenerys receives more visions from the Undying Ones, Drogon cuts his mother from the vision as the Undying Ones themselves are now attacking her.
When they attempted to drain Daenerys of her life, the dragon saved her by burning and tearing apart a floating and pulsating heart before burning the Undying Ones with his dragonfire. However, Drogon's action caused the entire chamber to get burned in the process, and the dragon and Daenerys escaped from the House of the Undying, which has become partially damaged.
A Storm of Swords[]
Drogon became slightly larger, about the size of a dog. He took part in Daenerys' plot to free the Unsullied, eunuch slave soldiers, who were trained in the Free City of Astapor. Drogon was a part of the payment that his mother agreed with a Slaver and Good Master Kraznys mo Nakloz in order to purchase the entire Unsullied host. Once Daenerys gives her dragon over to Kraznys, who in turn gives her control of the Unsullied, Drogon refuses to obey the wealthy slaver. Daenerys immediately betrays the Good Masters and has Drogon burn Kraznys mo Nakloz alive. After all the Good Masters and slavers are killed, the dragon returns to his mother.
A Dance with Dragons[]
Drogon apparently killed and ate a five-year-old girl named Hazzeah, whose bones were brought to Daenerys by her father, who calls Drogon The Winged Shadow. Horrified by what Drogon has done, Daenerys has her dragons chained up. While Viserion and Rhaegal were successfully chained, even though they had nothing to do with the incident, Drogon evaded capture and disappeared to parts unknown.
Later, he became attracted by sudden noises and the smell of blood, and this caused him to appear above Daznak's Pit. Drogon kills a boar that is present and begins feasting on the corpse of a slain pit fighter. After being provoked, he began setting the area ablaze, causing panic and chaos as spectators tried to flee the danger and ended up trampling one another. A Ghiscari animal handler then tries to kill Drogon with a spear. When he wounds the dragon, Daenerys rushes in to save Drogon.
She tries to calm Drogon, though it proves to be difficult as the dragon burns away her hair and clothing, leaving her naked. Daenerys uses a whip to berate and mount Drogon, though the beating only annoys him. The dragon then takes off in the air with his mother on his back, taking her to his lair in the Dothraki Sea. Drogon and Daenerys stayed in the vast inland region for a few days and were then encountered by Khal Jhaqo and fifty men from his khalasar.
