Drogoth the Dragon Lord is a major antagonist from The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II. He was the dragon lord and an ally of Sauron who terrorized dwarves mainly in the Withered Heath and the Blue Mountains.

Biography[]

Little is known about Drogoth's past, but it is certain that he also hated dwarves, but he was different from other dragons. He wore thick armor on his head and back, and he was greedy and wanted power and wealth. He decided to get these from the dwarves and take part in the War of the Ring as one of Sauron's important northern allies.

Evil campaign[]

The Mouth of Sauron and three Nazgul traveled with a small group to the Withered Heath to contact the dragons so that their master could find a possible ally against the dwarves. Drogoth was just to the north in front of his cave, where he guarded his treasures, with two dragon offspring by his side. The dwarves locked twelve fire drakes in the area behind thick walls and guarded them with serious protection. The Mouth of Sauron then took up the plan, what if they freed the dragon offspring and thereby gained Drogoth's trust and then tried to negotiate with him. Serious fights broke out in the area, the dwarves launched continuous counterattacks and the forces of Dol Guldur could only advance slowly, but the dwarves' losses also increased more and more and finally Sauron's forces were able to successfully free the fire drakes. After freeing them all, killing all the dwarves and completely destroying all their buildings, the Mouth of Sauron felt he could finally meet the dragon lord and went north with all his troops. The men of Dale tried to stop them, but they were all killed and the sides of evil finally met.

DrogothMouthofSaurondeal

Drogoth accepts the offer of the Mouth of Sauron and joins Sauron's forces.

Drogoth did not attack them, but at the same time he did not care that the fire drakes lived, but then the Mouth of Sauron made him an offer. He told him that the armies of Dol Guldur would attack Erebor and that if they succeeded in capturing, the entire fortress with all its treasures will become the property of the dragon lord. Drogoth immediately accepted the offer and became Sauron's ally along with other dragons. He then took part in the siege of Rivendell, took part in the final attack, killed some eagles and destroyed a couple of buildings. He was then present at the moment of the final victory of evil and Sauron winning the war.

Good campaign[]

Sauron made an offer to the dragon lord that if he would join him, he could receive one of the seven dwarven rings that he had acquired long ago. The dragon accepted the offer and became Sauron's ally, but he wanted more. He attacked the dwarves of the blue mountains, captured and burned their largest citadel.

DrogothFirePrepare

Drogoth prepare the kill the remaining survivors of the dwarves of the Blue Mountains.

One survivor successfully reached two heroes, the elf Glorfindel and the dwarf Glóin, who captured Ettenmoors. When they heard what happened, they set out with a smaller group of elves to help the dwarves and met them in their smaller camp. However, as soon as they arrived, the dragon lord immediately attacked them and destroyed the dwarves' buildings with his fireballs. The heroes and survivors fled to a place where the dragon could no longer fly, but at the same time he was constantly visited the area of the camp. The elves and dwarves also fought goblins and spiders, but they knew they couldn't fight monsters and dragon at the same time, so they used a different strategy. The dwarves distracted the dragon while building towers, and the elves advanced with the dwarven siege engines and killed the spiders and goblins. At first, it seemed that the tactic would not work against the dragon lord, but more and more towers were built, and the monster tried to destroy as many as possible, but he was injured more and more often and had to retreat as the elves made their way deeper and deeper into the captured citadel. When they finally made it to the throne room, Drogoth decided that he would fight until he died or until he killed all of his enemies. He caused serious losses with his fireballs, but finally the silver arrows of the archers of Mirkwood and the dwarves' throwing axes killed the dragon lord, around whom a huge fiery explosion occurred and his body fell down.

Personality[]

Drogoth was a devastating, ferocious, unbridled and merciless dragon. Like the other dragons, he hated dwarves, but he single-handedly did far more damage than any other dragon in his time. What emerges from both campaigns is that Drogoth, like Smaug, was very greedy, power-hungry, profiteering and covetous. At all costs he wanted to take something from the dwarves and keep it for himself, and he served and followed Sauron, but at the same time rather selfishly, joining him in both campaigns in such a way that it would be useful and valuable to him.

Trivia[]

  • As stated above, he was made exclusively for the video game, having never appeared in any other interpretation of Tolkein's works. Generally/canonically, Smaug is supposed to be the last of the Dragons.
  • In an interesting coincidence, his name sounds similar to that of a dangerous dark fantasy series dragon, Drogon, from A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones.
