Duke is a minor antagonist in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, serving as the main antagonist of the side quest "A Dangerous Game". He is a Novigrad criminal who wants to aspire to one of the bosses of the criminal underworld along the lines of Whoreson Jr.
Biography[]
Duke is a Novigrad criminal who began his rise to power after the death of the powerful mob boss Whoreson Junior. He decided to take his place, but he lacked a huge amount of money, influence or even henchmen. Duke, wanting to look for money, realized that by selling rare Gwent cards he can earn a lot of money and become powerful. However, the dwarf Zoltan also wants to get three rare cards because of his debts. Duke didn't want the dwarf to find these cards, so he and his friend Earl slowed down and pushed Zoltan from the card business to gwent.
As Geralt goes to the Sage and Rosemary which is being made into a cabaret, he encounters Zoltan arguing with Duke and Earl who try to blackmail Zoltan into withdrawing from the Gwent business. Duke threatens to kill Zoltan if he gets in his way but Zoltan isn't scare of him and taunts him for healthy competition. Earl interrupts him and angrily asks Duke why he's talking to him if he could have sharpened him just as Geralt arrives. When Geralt joins the meeting, Zoltan introduces Earl and Duke, introducing Geralt himself to them, forcing Earl and Duke to disappear for a while.
After finishing talking with Zoltan, Duke sends his henchmen to break into a shop owned by Zed, a rare card dealer. Duke's men beat Zed to death trying to get information out of him but only recover one of the rare cards Duke is after. When Geralt enters Zed's house through the roof entrance, he kills Duke's henchmen and searches his house which leads him to recover one of the cards as well as Zed's ledger which reveals the location of the others. Duke also sends Earl after a collector named Ravik who has one of the other cards, forcing Geralt to play a game of gwent for Ravik's life before defeating Earl.
After Geralt and Zoltan have acquired all the rare cards, Zoltan contacts a contactee who wants to buy cards from him for a huge fortune. When Geralt and Zoltan come to the brewery to meet the client, they find Duke has killed him and stolen the money he was going to buy the cards with. Duke mockingly greets them before calling his henchmen to attack Zoltan and fleeing across town, leading Geralt to chase after him. The chase leads into the sewers where Geralt eventually finds Duke critically injured, having been attacked by drowners. Geralt gets the money back from him and can either finish him off or abandon him to die from his injuries.
