The Duke of Gibea is a villain in The Kingkiller Chronicle, by Patrick Rothfuss. He is a significant figure in the history of The Aturan Empire. He is an infamous mass murderer and serial killer.
Biography[]
The Duke of Gibea was an aristocrat in the Aturan Empire. He would capture subjects from around his lands. He would dissect them while they were still alive, in order to study their anatomy, in order to advance his medical knowledge. He captured, mutilated, and tortured thousands of men, women, and children. He wrote many medical texts concerning anatomy and medicine, which ended up greatly advancing medical knwoledge. Eventually, the Order of the Amyr raided his home and killed him. During the raid, his house was burned, and some of his medical texts were destroyed.
Speculation[]
It is speculated that The Duke of Gibea was a member of the Amyr. The Amyr were known to act for "The Greater Good". On one of his original texts, the motto "Ivare Enim Euge" (meaning for the greater good) was written. It is possible he commited his atrocities because he was, in his opinion, fulfilling his duty as an Amyr. If so, The Armyr did not support his actions, as they ended up stopping him.
