Don't think that I'm naive, Zidler. I shall hold the deeds to the Moulin Rouge, and if there are any shenanigans, my manservant Warner will deal with it in the only language that you underworld show folk understand. Satine will be mine. It's not that I'm a jealous man. I just DON'T LIKE OTHER PEOPLE TOUCHING MY THINGS!
~ Duke of Monroth

The Duke of Monroth (often shorted to "The Duke") is the main villain of the 2001 live-action film, Moulin Rouge!.

He was portrayed by Richard Roxburgh, who also portrayed Hugh Stamp, and would later go on to portray Count Dracula in the movie, Van Helsing.

He was a wealthy and unscrupulous aristocrat, a potential investor in the cabaret, and became increasingly antagonistic as the story progressed.

The Duke is an obsessive fan of Satine after watching her performances, but Satine fell in love with Christian, an aspiring writer of whom she mistook for the Duke. Since they had feelings for each other in secret and the Duke interrupted them in the practice for the musical. Angered by Satine's love for Christian, the Duke made a deal with Zidler (Satine's father figure) to convince her to leave Christian because she was dying of tuberculosis. He later attempts to kill Christian during the musical but gets knocked unconscious after numerous attempts. Shortly before Satine's death, he flees the scene and gets away with his attempted murder.
