Duo Keyshauna Renee Lingo, better known simply as Duo, is the titular mascot of the language learning app Duolingo. While seldom depicted as a villain in the app, being an encouraging and helpful teacher, the promotional material very frequently depicts him as extremely evil and willing to go to extreme lengths to get people to do their lessons.
Villainous Acts[]
Kidnapping[]
Duo's most well-known crime is kidnapping. He very frequently abducts those who miss their lessons, sometimes kidnapping their families as well. He also occasionally kidnaps people for seemingly no reason at public events, such as Duolingo On Ice.
Stalking[]
Duo has personal information about all of Duolingo's users. He uses this for finding those who don't do their lessons, even in Duolingo Push where he doesn't even kidnap them.
Torture[]
Duo often torments those he kidnaps with starvation and destruction of personal belongings.
Theft[]
Duo will sometimes steal objects from those who fail to do their lessons.
Homicide[]
Duo has pushed several people off of ledges, most prominently seen in the trailer for Love Language.
Assault[]
Duo shoved down many people while advertising for Barbie, and attacked people in a bar with Red from Angry Birds. He even attacked players in a maze in the official Roblox game based on Duolingo.
Abuse of Power[]
Duo is a terrible boss, often forcing his employees to work under harsh conditions and making them do bad things. He chases his employees around the office threateningly and makes them attend long and boring meetings where he threatens them.
Child Abuse[]
Duo and Scrub Daddy had several children, sponges shaped like owls. Duo gave one of them a makeshift lobotomy with a drill. He has also poorly treated many of his abducted children.
Public Indecency[]
Duo frequently walks around in public wearing a bikini, twerking. He also once gave someone $50 to kiss his butt.
Trivia[]
- When Duo was created, he wasn't intended to be villainous in any way, or even as comical as he is now. This villainous characterization came from internet memes about him being evil, and the company adopted it into their brand.
- A common meme in the Duolingo and Owl House fandoms is that Duo is in a romantic relationship with the house demon Hooty. While Duolingo has utilised this meme in their social media posts, the latter's creator Dana Terrace has yet to make comment on this pairing.
- In addition to the aforementioned pairing, Duo is seemingly is in a relationship with Dua Lipa, with a cutout of her appearing in a romantic ice skating skit with Duo, flavor text for users of the app revealing he spends a lot of time looking at pictures of her, and the obituary for Duo's death asking fans to respect Dua Lipa's privacy.
- Interestingly, Dua Lipa has participated in this in-universe joke, "mourning" Duo's death on her Twitter account.
- According to Duo's obituary during his "death", he was born in 1000 BC, making him 3,025 years old.
