Duregh was a Klingon male featured in the Star Trek: The Next Generation novel The Devil's Heart.
Biography[]
He was a direct descendant of the Klingon Emperor Kessec who used the powers of what the Klingons called the Pagrashtak - an object of immense power that humans called The Devil's Heart - to found the first Klingon Empire. Kessec willingly gave up the Pagrashtak to a slave as he knew that if he held on to it too long he and the Empire would be destroyed, and for that Kessec was killed by his sons.
By the late 24th century Kessec's house had fallen on hard times and was a shadow of its former self. Meanwhile Duregh had become a Captain in the Klingon Defense Force and by 2368 commanded the bird of prey Plath. Duregh's grandfather Kruger told Duregh that the Pagrashtak had resurfaced. Duregh set out on his ship to find and retrieve the Heart and soon learned that it was being held by Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise, who was trying to work out what the Pagrashtak wanted of him.
Duregh found the Enterprise in rough shape due to a battle it had fought with the Romulans. Duregh fired upon the Enterprise, causing even more damage to the Federation starship before revealing that he had a claim to the Pagrashtak. Picard refused his claim, knowing Duregh would use it for violent ends. Duregh ordered his crew to destroy the Enterprise, but the Pagrashtak caused the Plath's phasers to misfire, destroying the Klingon ship as the object felt its best chance of continuing on its journey was to stay with Picard for the time being. For his part, Picard felt it was even more vital to remove the stone completely from the galaxy's affairs, and that Duregh's betrayal showed that the continued presence of the Pagrashtak would destabilize the entire Alpha Quadrant.
