Dwight Kurt Schrute III is the deuteragonist of the American sitcom The Office.
He is the antagonistic "Assistant (to the) Regional Manager" for most of the series, until his goals are met in becoming manager at the end of the show. At the start of the show, he is characterized as sycophantic and gullible and the foil to straight man, Jim Halpert. As the series continues, Dwight's toady attitude becomes more self serving but at his core he is still very intense and eccentric. After Michael Scott leaves in the show's seventh season, Dwight and Jim take over as the lead characters.
He was portrayed by Rainn Wilson, who also played Gallaxhar in Monsters Vs Aliens, Gargamel in Smurfs: The Lost Village, Jack Morris in The Meg, Peace Master in Adventure Time, and Lex Luthor in the DC Animated Movie Universe.
Personality[]
Dwight is considered extremely unorthodox with his socially apathetic and oblivious actions and ideals. He tends to not always possess people skills when going about his business. He is also very competitive, gullible, and respects authority and hierarchy. It gets to a point where, while he isn't a bad person, he is very much capable to be a danger to others whether or not his intentions come from a well-meaning or selfish place. An example of his craziness coming from a good place was when he started a small fire in the office with the intention of training his workers in fire safety. Although he was coming from a protective and educational place, he ended up instilling hysteria among the office and indirectly caused a plethora of destruction. When he revealed that the fire was merely a test, coworker, Stanley Hudson keeled over from a heart attack. Whether or not Dwight's aim was to help, his reckless and extreme actions could have potentially killed his coworker.
Biography[]
At the beginning of the series, Dwight Schrute is a loyal and successful salesman at the Scranton branch of Dander Mifflin, despite his lack of general knowledge. Michael gave Dwight the title of "Regional Manager's Assistant", but he always calls himself "Regional Manager's Assistant" and is trying to be promoted to Michael's Deputy Commander. Dwight longs for power and authority over his peers and welcomes the little work Michael or anyone else gives him. Despite being better than many individuals and often deceived and naïve (allowing him to be easily fooled by Jim), Dwight is an intelligent worker who has saved Dunder Mifflin from any crisis and maintained the company successfully.
Dwight serves as the rival of both Jim Halpert and Andy Bernard during the show. He finds many ways to inconvenience the two and many other people around the office. He adamantly wants Jim to be fired for a majority of The Office but most of Jim's actions are reactionary to Dwight's madness. One occurrence of said madness was when Jim threw a snowball at Dwight's face for making an unnecessary comment and retaliated by attacking Jim with snowballs outside. Dwight pelted Jim with borderline ice balls until he was tired and Jim started to bleed. Despite their differences, the two end up becoming closer and their bond goes from enemies to best friends. Along with Jim, Andy is also antagonized probably harsher but less frequently. When Andy arrived back from anger management with an optimistic attitude, Dwight sprayed Andy in the eyes with pepper spray without hesitation and proceeded to reassure the office that what he did was to protect them. He was also engaged in an affair with Andy's fiancée and Dwight's lover, Angela Martin. Despite Angela not truly loving Andy, Dwight doesn't seem to care about Andy being hurt at all by the two's actions behind his back. Like Jim, Andy and Dwight settle their differences with Andy being in support of Dwight and Angela's love at the wedding.
