Earl, also known as The Walrus, is a minor character in the top-down shooter video game Hotline Miami. He is a 50 Blessings operative who wears a walrus mask. He is unsuccessful in carrying out a massacre ordered by 50 Blessings.
Appearance[]
Other than wearing a walrus mask, much of Earl's physical appearance is unclear. Found dead, Earl appears to be a bald, shirtless man wearing blue jeans and dark turqoise shoes. Earl is covered in blood and bruises, and appears to be rigged to a large battery.
Biography[]
Nothing is known about Earl's past. When 50 Blessings takes a stand against "Russian oppression" in America by using cryptic and threatening phone calls to coerce people into killing members of the Russian Mafia, Earl is one of the many people in Miami who start receiving these phone calls. Implied to be experienced enough in combat for 50 Blessings to target him, Earl complies with the messages left on his answering machine and tries to massacre a group of Russian mobsters occupying NW 184th Street. However, Earl botches the hit and gets captured by the Russian Mafia. Looking to crack down on the mysterious killing sprees targeting their criminal organization, the Russian mobsters tie Earl to a chair and begin torturing him for information, brutalizing his body and rigging him to a large battery to repeatedly electrocute him.
On April 16th, 1989, Jacket is sent by the callers to attack NW 184th Street to make up for Earl's failure to do his job. Jacket is successful in wiping out the gangsters occupying the house, including Earl's captors. There he discovers Earl's bloodied corpse after he had been electrocuted to death. Jacket finds that the mobsters were unable to get any substantial information out of Earl, as Earl had apparently sat through the entire torture session without giving any answers, ending his life in the process. Looting the walrus mask from Earl's body and fleeing the scene, Jacket seems to realize from the grisly sight of Earl's body that he is not the only one receiving and complying with threatening phone calls. Earl's walrus mask grants Jacket the "Survive Two Bullets" ability when worn, making Jacket durable enough to survive two direct gunshots without dying.

Trivia[]
- Earl's corpse is recycled for one of Hotline Miami's bonus levels, "Exposed".
- In the first game, Earl's mask is a direct upgrade to the Rufus mask. However, in Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number's level editor, both masks share the exact same perk.
