Earl Firefly, also known as The Professor is a minor antagonist in the 2003 horror film House of 1000 Corpses.
He was portrayed by Jake McKinnon.
Biography[]
Background[]
Earl Firefly was the husband of Gloria Teasedale. The two had a happy marriage and had two sons, Rufus and Tiny. One day, however, Earl suddenly went mad. He claimed he was possessed by ghosts and tried to burn down the farm house where the family lived. With gasoline, he started a fire in the basement, where his son Tiny was sleeping at the time. All survived the fire, but Tiny was badly burned. Earl then disappeared from his family's life. The exact timing is unknown, but he became one of experiments Dr. Satan who made deep surgical incisions on him to make him a super human.
Either the fire or the operations severely deformed Earl's body so that it hardly looked like a human. Missing limbs were identified by Dr. Satan replaced with mechanical modifications. Whether all of this happened prior to his attack on his family, and possibly even what triggered his madness, is not known. In any case, after the attack on his family, Earl lived in Dr. Satan's underground cave system below the Firefly Farm. There he was responsible for receiving the victims who were lowered down a well by the Firefly family so that Dr. Satan can experiment on them.
House of 1000 Corpses[]
When it's Halloween again, two more victims, Jerry and Denise, are lowered into the well. Denise is able to break free before Earl arrives, so Earl only picks up Jerry and brings him to Dr. Satan. While Dr. Satan operates on Jerry, Denise also kicks into the operating room and testifies in horror at Jerry's death. Dr. Satan sees Denise and immediately calls Earl. Earl immediately storms over and sees Denise aiming at her with his mechanical eyes. On Dr. Satan's orders, he stomps on Denise and takes out his axe, but as Denise ducks under the attack, Earl smashes the fragile wooden door instead and allows Denise to escape into the catacombs.
Furious, Earl yanks the axe out of the wooden door and goes in pursuit. As Denise gets lost, Earl can finally catch her and slowly steps towards her. Again he strikes back with the axe, but one more time Denise ducks under the blow. Instead of Denise, Earl hits a support beam of the tunnel and when it breaks, the entire tunnel collapses over Earl. Earl is buried under the rubble and is presumed dead, but Denise survives and is able to fight her way up through the collapsed tunnel to the surface. Denise is then recaptured there by Captain Spaulding and Otis B. Driftwood, and they returned her to Dr. Satan, in which Dr. Satan was already on her brain and Earl (who is shown to have survived the collapse) is at his side again. However, this might've been Denise's dying hallucination after she was stabbed by Otis in Spaulding's car.
Trivia[]
- During the scenes where Earl Firefly is chasing Denise with an axe and swinging it at her, actor Jake McKinnon could barely see in his goggles and he was wielding a real axe in order to cut through the wood, nearly killing Erin Daniels with it at one point. Director Rob Zombie noted "We just assumed she would get out of the way".
