Earle Devine is the supporting antagonist of the Rizzoli & Isles novel "I Know a Secret". Earle is the father of Holly Devine, a sociopath who pushed Earle to kill the man she sent to prison on false reports.
Biography[]
Holly was one of the first kids to report the Stanek family in the Apple Tree daycare case, where she and Billy Sullivan lied the Staneks raped them, then other kids were pushed by their parents to send them straight to jail as well. As Holly's mother and Earle's late wife was raped by her uncle, they both stood by her completely.
After Martin Stanek was released, the people who reported the Staneks were killed and grotesquely mutilated based on the paintings of Christian martyrs in the Stanek house. Billy and his mother Susan were behind the murders, as Billy and Holly killed Lizzie DePalma, whose disappearance sent the town into the panic that sealed the fates of the Staneks. As Holly herself was worried Martin would tell the truth as well, she lied to her father about Martin being responsible and, knowing he had nothing to lose while dying from lung cancer, pushed him to shoot Martin in his home. Martin committed suicide by cop by provoking Detective Darren Crowe to shoot him dead.
The truth came out after the Sullivans tried to kill Holly, only for the both of them to be shot. Holly's legal fate is left ambiguous, even after Lizzie's remains were found.
Trivia[]
- Earle is inspired by Gary Plauché, the murderer of the pedophile guilty of kidnapping and raping his son Jody. He was told by a cameraman filming the arrest of the pedophile, Jeff Doucet, when and at which airport Doucet would be, where Gary shot Doucet and was swiftly arrested. He was acquitted at trial and later passed away.
