My master... New world... Space resources... Even a decaying pile of scrap like you can guess with that many hints, no?!
~ Earthrock Torirovich justifying himself.

Earthrock Trilobyte, also known as the Earthrock Torirovich in Japanese, is one of the bosses and a minor antagonist in Mega Man X8. He is a new generation Repliroid who was designed after a trilobyte, hence his American name. The Maverick Hunters face him while they investigate the mines in the Metal Valley. Earthrock Trilobyte's weapon is the Crystal Wall, which Gigabolt Man-O-War is weak to, though Earthrock can move his around, as seen in his Overdrive attack.

He was voiced by Kyouzou Kudou in Japanese and Randall Wiebe in English.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Earthrock Trilobyte is a short and stocky Repliroid. His armor was mostly brown and yellow on the outside, and evoked the appearance of a trilobite with the character's head, antennae, and back resembling the animal's carapace. Once this outer armor was knocked off, Earthrock Trilobyte was revealed to have a light blue suit underneath.

Personality[]

Earthrock Trilobyte is a spiteful and arrogant individual who looked down on the Maverick Hunters, believing they were ignorant and outdated. He was very loyal to Sigma and often touted his supremacy, and was also very excited about the "new world". Despite his big talk, he appeared very stressed and cowardly whenever his armor was knocked from his body.

His Weapon[]

Earthrock Torirovich uses the Crystal Wall for his main weapon. These walls can act as a shield and can be knocked over, crushing enemies in their way. They manifest as tall yellow-orange crystals. Earthrock himself can summon purple, mobile, flat-topped variants for his Overdrive Attack. Upon Earthrock's defeat, X gets the yellow-orange variation. X can also charge it up to summon a bigger wall that reveals an item that can restore his life energy as well as reveal a Rare Metal.

Roll gains the Violent Mirror Sever, which changes the Z-Saber that she inherited from the then-deceased Zero to orange, allowing Roll to reflect projectiles that she strikes with her attacks.

Axl gains the Bound Blaster, another weapon that Earthrock can use during his fight. With this gun, Axl can fire balls that bounce throughout the room.

Gigabolt Man-o-War is weak to all three of these weapons, which can destroy his jellyfishes. The formermost can also redirect Gigabolt's Thunder Dancers in his overdrive.

Biography[]

Earthrock Trilobyte makes his lair in the Metal Valley stage, which served as the base of operations for Earthrock Trilobyte's old job.

At first, X and his allies are pursued by a berserk Mechaniloid that must be taken down, lest they cannot progress. Afterwards, they must head into the hangar, where Earthrock Trilobyte tries to hamper their pursuit with his Crystal Walls. Following this is another fight with the berserk Mechaniloid that attacked them earlier. Afterwards, the gang enters the room where Earthrock Trilobyte is fought.

Battle[]

Earthrock Trilobyte has several attacks at his disposal. His main attack has him summon Crystal Walls to crush the player's character. Another has him dash on all fours at the player, stopping at an edge. This can destroy his Crystal Walls. He can also throw purple crystal balls that bounce around the arena. Upon losing half his stamina, Earthrock Trilobyte will barrage the player with Crystal Walls. Earthrock Trilobyte's defeat nets the player access to the Crystal Wall weapon. Earthrock Trilobyte is weak to the Squeeze Bomb, which can blow off his armour.

Quotes[]

Pre-battle[]

If X is the player character[]

  • Earthrock Torirovich: "The minerals we mine here are essential to the development of space."
  • X: "What do you plan to do with these rare resources?"
  • Earthrock Torirovich: "Even if I explained, I doubt a brainless Maverick Hunter like yourself could understand. I'll bury you old heaps of junk right here!"
If at least four Irregulars were defeated prior[]
  • Earthrock Torirovich: "Do you realise that the ore we mine here is used in space development?"
  • X: "Shiguma... He must be behind this! What does he want with these minerals?"
  • Earthrock Torirovich: "My master... New world... Space resources... Even a rotting piece of sh** like you can guess with that many hints, no?" (X doesn't respond.) "The end of your world has come!"

If Roll is the player character[]

  • Earthrock Torirovich: "The minerals we mine here are essential to the development of space. But I don't suppose that means much to you, does it, Zero?"
  • Roll: (Plays along.) "Space development? Mavericks don't usually worry about such complicated issues."
  • Earthrock Torirovich: (Scoffs.) "I will not be insulted by a broken-down scrap heap like you!"
If at least four Irregulars were defeated prior[]
  • Earthrock Torirovich: "The minerals we mine are essential to the development of Zero."
  • Roll: (Plays along.) "And you're mining it for Shiguma? Are you crazy?"
  • Earthrock Torirovich: "Have you given any thought as to why my master might want such resources such as this?"
  • Roll: (Outraged.) "I don't need to know your plan to know that it stinks and I won't let you get away with it!"
  • Earthrock Torirovich: "You'll have to answer my master sooner or later, you worthless piece of sh**!"

If Axl is the player character[]

  • Earthrock Torirovich: "The minerals we mine here are essential to the development of space. I don't suppose a half-***ed prototype like you could guess what I'm getting at."
  • Axl: (Frustrated.) "You Mavericks never made a lick of sense to me."
  • Earthrock Torirovich: (Boastful.) "I've been chosen and you've been left behind. You'll never be as brilliant as me!"
If at least four Irregulars were defeated prior[]
  • Earthrock Torirovich: "Do you realise that the ore we mine here is used in space development?"
  • Axl: "Let me guess... Sigma ordered you to dig it up for him, right?"
  • Earthrock Torirovich: "A pile-of-sh** prototype such as yourself dares to place judgement on my master!?"
  • Axl: (Outraged.) "You're the one with poor judgement, Trilobyte. Getting fooled and used by Shiguma!"
  • Earthrock Torirovich: "Our brand new world will soon be born! Fools like you from the old world will fall!"

Trivia[]

  • Earthrock Trilobyte shares his gimmick of losing his suit of armor with Armored Armadillo and Crystal Snail.
  • Etymology: The "Torirovich" in "Earthrock Torirovich" is derived from a Japanese transliteration of "trilobyte" and the Slavic name ending -ovich.
  • The entrance to Earthrock Trilobyte's warehouse still contains Crystal Walls after his defeat, but his voice isn't heard. A robot mimicking his powers may be the culprit.
  • Earthrock is the only Mega Man X8 boss to curse, and one of the few in the Mega Man X series. Double, who says the word "damn!" post-defeat and pre-mortim in Mega Man X4, is another, while Infinity Mijinion curses in Japanese in Mega Man X6, as his defeat line is, "What the hell are you doing!?" In the Japanese version of Mega Man X6, Metalshark Prayer may say, "Kuso!" (one translation of "Dammit!") upon taking damage from a Meteor Rain, his weakness.
