Ebisu is a minor antagonist turned supporting playable character in Dragalia Lost, being the main antagonist of the event "A Clawful Caper". He is a lazy catlike dragon who, out of jealousy for his rival Daikokuten, stole all the New Year's presents that were to be delivered, forcing the Wyrmclan leader Mitsuhide and Euden to track him down.
He is voiced by Wasabi Mizuta in Japanese, and Brian Drummond in English, the latter who also voices Xenos in the same franchise.
Appearance[]
Ebisu is a chubby, feline dragon resembling a calico cat with black and white fur. He has golden eyes, gold-tipped black horns and purple inner ears as well as gold markings on his arms, legs, back, tail and back of ears. He wears a purple bib with bells and what seems to be the Japanese kanji for "fortune" on it, along with a green and black nio-dasuki rope around his neck. He also carries a white and gold bag slung around his body filled with taiyaki and carries a simple wooden fishing rod.
In overdrive mode, every part of his outfit and body that isn't golden turns gold in color, with the markings on his limbs turning black instead.
Personality[]
True to his feline appearance, Ebisu is an exceptionally lazy dragon, enjoying relaxing and daydreaming in the sun. Despite this, he seems quite ambitious and attention-seeking, hoping to gain Daikokouten's approval and attention, which leads him to steal the New Year's presents.
Biography[]
Background[]
Long ago, Ebisu and Daikokuten would chase each other throughout Hinomoto, doing it every day for centuries. Unbeknownst to everybody, Ebius only did this so that one day, he'd catch up to his rival and grow closer to him, but no matter what he did Daikokuten was always one step ahead, with the chase perturbing him. One day, Ebisu hears that the ruler of Hinomoto's dragons, Amaterasu, was selecting dragons to be part of her Great Twelve, so he immediately jumps at the opportunity as once he became famous and powerful, Daikokuten would be forced to acknowledge him. However that new year's eve was a cold winter and by instinct, Ebisu huddled up and overslept. Once he woke up, he heard that Daikokuten was the first to reach Amaterasu and was selected instead, further increasing the gap between them. Further fuelling his jealousy, rumors were circulated that Ebisu's constant chasing helped improve Daikokuten's speed, sending him spiralling into depression as his rival kept climbing the ranks, never really knowing him.
A Clawful Caper[]
Upon hearing news that Daikokuten and his soulbound Wyrmclan leader Mitsuhide were tasked with delivering New Year's presents to Alberia, Ebisu was overcome with jealousy and stole them all away. As such, Mitsuhide sends her attendant Chitose to seek out Euden and his friends for help while she, her other attendant Hanabusa and fellow Wyrmclan leader Nobunaga seek out the dragon, lest they be disgraced before Amaterasu. Grouping up, they decide to catch a fish to lure Ebisu in. They succeed in catching one, but said fish turns out to be a gigantic Sunrise Snapper which the party have to fend off. Killing it successfully, they find a heavenly gleamshard in its stomach which they deduce Ebisu dropped as he stole the gifts.
Capturing Ebisu, he attempts to flee but is tackled by Hanabusa as he releases his pent-up stress. As a final trick, the dragon whips out an Otherworld Shard, sending himself to a bizarre realm known as the Kagura Stage, with Euden and the party in hot pursuit to determine his motives. Beating him back, the party attempts to threaten Ebisu to give the presents back but all fall short, with Chitose even giggling halfway through his threat. This changes when Daikokuten arrives, knowing of Ebisu's regret of now becoming one of the twelve so the dragon escapes. Daikokuten explains the story of how Ebisu failed to become one of the Great Twelve from oversleeping, and realises that he could've woken him up and prevented him from being so jealous.
Travelling to seek out Ebisu, Hanabusa gets another stomachache but refuses Mitsuhide's offers for him to relax, stating that he will not be looked down upon ever again for his stomachaches, being determined to perform his dance to everybody. This also encourages Daikokuten to try being a better friend to Ebisu and give him a good scolding for his good. Finding the cat dragon, Ebisu is defeated by the party and forced to surrender. Daikokuten tells him that his selfish actions have made him unworthy of being one of the Great Twelve, which Ebisu confirms he realised, only pursuing the position as he wanted it and admitting he stole the presents so he'd know how delivering them feels like. Mitsuhide comforts him, telling him that while life is short and dark, he can still correct his mistakes and offers Ebisu to join her and the party in distributing the gifts. He happily agrees and thus, joins in the party in distributing the gifts.
Later on that night, whilst relaxing under the moon, having come to terms with what he's done, Ebisu is approached by Daikokuten who apologises for not waking him that New Year's eve. Ebisu quickly realises that it wasn't Daikokuten that drifted away from him, but it was him that prevented himself from getting close. Laughing at his own folly, Daikokuten mistakes Ebisu as laughing at him and angrily leaves, causing the cat dragon to chase after him again, perpetuating their never-ending game of cat-and-mouse.
Trivia[]
- Ebisu's Japanese voice actress ironically voices Doraemon currently, another red-bean pastry loving cat-like creature, with Doraemon being a robot. Contrastingly, Doraemon is selfless and hardworking while Ebisu is lazy and selfish.
