Biography[]
Past[]
In the past, there were two warring tribes living on different sides of Diablo Island. One of the tribes summoned Eclipso; an evil entity of vengeance, trapping it in a black diamond. However, the Entity eventually killed them all.
Eventually, an explorer named Bruce Gordon rediscovered Diablo Island and brought the black diamond back to the United States with him, becoming the new host of Eclipso. Gordon used it to achieve wealth and fame and became obsessed and reliant on the power, to the point where he couldn't put the diamond down. However, he felt guilty for the deaths the entity had committed, and sought to end his life, but he was manipulated into relinquishing control of his body to the entity instead.
Eclipso then killed a young girl named Rebecca McNider, the daughter of the original Dr. Mid-Nite which brought him into conflict with the original Justice Society of America. Starman eventually killed Bruce, returning Eclipso to the diamond and placed it in a box for safe keeping.
Return and Final Defeat[]
“ | I see you in there. Eclipso. | „ |
~ Cindy Burman finds Eclipso's diamond. |
Following the aftermath of the ISA's battle with the new JSA, Cindy Burman finds the black diamond in the Wizard's storage unit and tells Eclipso she sees him.
Several months later, Eclipso begins working with Cindy to take down the JSA by forming Injustice Unlimited while secretly manipulating her and Stargirl. He is set free after Stargirl destroys the diamond with her Staff, betrays Burman and kills Isaac Bowin. Eclipso assumes the form of a ten year old Bruce Gordon and resumes his reign of terror to make himself more powerful by feeding on the negativity and darkness within the residents of Blue Valley. His ultimate goal was to possess Courtney and use her connection with the Cosmic Staff to become a god by merging the Earth with the Shadowlands, his home dimension and consume every corrupt soul on Earth at once. Eclipso is eventually stopped for good due to the combined efforts of the Justice Society of America and their new allies.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
“ | Pat: He's the devil in the shadows. Evil, Court, real evil, imprisoned inside the black diamond. And whoever has the diamond has Eclipso's power. Courtney: What are Eclipso's powers? Pat: He can get inside your head, make you see things that aren't there. |
„ |
~ Pat Dugan explaining what Eclipso is capable of to his step-daughter, Courtney Whitmore |
“ | Evil boy. Your soul is so ripe! | „ |
~ Eclipso using his powers to absorb Isaac Bowin's soul |
- Soul Absorption: Eclipso consumes corrupted or troubled souls, and with each soul, his powers grow stronger. He seeks out a target and then inhales their soul through his mouth, relishing on the essences that he has consumed. This leaves his victims as piles of ash.
- Darkness Detection: Eclipso can sense the inner darkness within souls of people brought into his presence, allowing him to identify which targets to feed on.
- Hypnosis: Eclipso has the ability to hypnotize humans and influence their minds.
- Telepathy: Eclipso has telepathic abilities that he uses to influence, control, and manipulate his victims.
- Mental Illusion Casting: Eclipso can use telepathy to create mental illusions that can be used as distractions, causing the target to lash out or feel inclined to act in a way they normally wouldn't. He can also use this power on multiple people at once, driving a group of his enemies to suffer the mental hallucinations of their worst nightmares that appear as real as anything else and are not limited to the visual, but vanish the second he's finished with them.
- Subliminal Messaging: Eclipso has the unique ability to implant his thoughts into another person, making them believe the thoughts they are having are their own. Once he implants his messaging, he can manipulate how the victim sees their surroundings to better force the victim to act out his will.
- Fear Projection: This allows Eclipso to sense the greatest fear of someone and make them believe their fears are coming true. Eclipso used on Bobbie Burman, Wildcat, Hourman, and Doctor Mid-Nite to carefully select the right mental hallucinations to make them suffer.
- Possession: Eclipso has the power to possess humans. When Cindy became threatened by Bobbie Burman, he possessed Cindy and killed Bobbie. When Eclipso's powers grew, he could possess people without the need of the Black Diamond, such as Paul Deisinger. During the JSA's final battle against Eclipso, he forced Courtney to say out loud that she hates him, thereby embracing her inner darkness and allowing Eclipso to get his hooks in her and possess her body, which also allowed him to wield the Cosmic Staff.
- Teleportation: Eclipso is able to teleport from one place to another through unknown means
- Weather Manipulation: While not an entirely conscious power, Eclipso's very presence brings out the darkness in others and the area that he inhabits.
- Astronomical Manipulation: When Eclipso was freed from the black diamond, a lunar eclipse appeared in the sky that many residents of Blue Valley witnessed.
- Superhuman Strength: Eclipso has superhuman strength that allows him to inflict serious damage on others, beyond the scope of normal strength.
- Superhuman Speed: He has the ability to move at an inhuman speed.
- Superhuman Durability: Eclipso's durability against otherwise lethal attacks is one of his greater attributes, allowing him to stay alive in otherwise deadly situations.
Abilities[]
- Master Manipulator: Eclipso was well skilled in the art of deception, as he was able to escape from the black diamond by manipulating both the Justice Society and Injustice Unlimited.
- Master Martial Artist: Eclipso is a highly skilled fighter, as he easily defeated every member of the original and new JSA in unarmed combat, while his opponents had weapons.
Weaknesses[]
- Light: Because Eclipso is a being of darkness and despair, the counter opposite of his powers is light. The light from the Cosmic Staff physically annoyed Eclipso and left him in a weakened state. This weakness was present again when Jennie-Lynn Hayden used her green energy to push Eclipso backward. Similar to the staff, Eclipso was affected by the light but pushed through the light to knock Jennie aside. The lightning of Thunderbolt also was able to exploit this, visibly affecting Eclipso more than most attacks and leaving him heavily sighing shortly after their brief fight. Thunderbolt was also one of the three people fighting Eclipso considered one who "commands the light".
- Thunderbolt: Although it was a team effort, Thunderbolt was the one who took down Eclipso in the end by turning him into toast; showing that despite how powerful Eclipso is, he’s still susceptible to the reality warping powers of the Thunderbolt.
Victims[]
- Rebecca McNider
- Bobbie Burman
- Isaac Bowin
- Solomon Grundy
Indirectly[]
- Bruce Gordon

Trivia[]
- This interpretation of Eclipso seems to draw inspiration from Freddy Krueger and It.
- One of Eclipso's hosts from the comics; Alex Montez, appears in the series as Yolanda's younger brother, portrayed by Jonathan Blanco. However, he was not possessed by Eclipso in the show.
- When his host dies, Eclipso will be forced back into the diamond, and as long no one touch it, Eclipso will be powerless inside.
- He is arguably the Bigger Bad of the entire series as it was the murder of Dr. Mid-Nite's daughter that led the original Justice Society of America to kill Bruce Gordon in order to defeat him which caused the group to fracture and ultimately meet their end at the hands of the Injustice Society.
- Eclipso is similar to Deathstorm, from season 8 of The Flash, as they are both manipulative, evil entities that satisfy their hunger by feeding off of the emotions of humans and have the ability to consume their victim's essence. Also like Deathstorm, Eclipso gains a physical form through deception (Deathstorm made Caitlin Snow believe he was Ronnie Raymond to obtain the quantum splicer, Eclipso tricked Stargirl into shattering his diamond) and both use their enemies' fears against them by creating illusions.
- He also shares similarities with the demons Neron and Mallus from DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. All three of them possessed a hosts’ body for various reasons in their quests to destroy mankind and made their vessels' face have a frightening appearance. In addition, Eclipso and the two demons betray and/or kill their human allies once they are no longer of any use.
- Stargirl was Eclipso's first live-action appearance.
