Red Ranger, I'll see that you pay for this, if it's the last thing I ever do.
~ Ecliptor after Andros seemingly kills Astronema and his final words before his demise.

Ecliptor is the robotic third and later second-in-command of the United Alliance of Evil, the father figure to Astronema, the archenemy of both Andros and Darkonda. He the secondary antagonist of Power Rangers In Space.

He is voiced by Lex Lang who previously voiced the Ghost of Darkness in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the Defector and Louie Kaboom in Power Rangers Zeo, Rygog in Power Rangers Turbo and later voiced Jakarak also in In Space as well as providing the second and more used voice of Zen-Aku in Power Rangers Wild Force.

Biography[]

Past[]

Ecliptor's origins are unknown as is whether he was built for Dark Specter's United Alliance of Evil or joined it later. What is known is that, by 1988, he had become a high ranking member of the organisation and was clearly very trusted by Dark Specter. After Darkonda kidnapped Karone of KO-35, he had Ecliptor raise her into the villainous Astronema although he grew to deeply care about her like a father.

In Space[]

For unknown reasons, Ecliptor is not present at the United Alliance of Evil's meeting on the Cimmerian Planet nor is he present when Astronema first encounters the Space Rangers. He first appears when Astronema sends him to destroy the NASADA space silo where the Mega Shuttle is kept so the Astro Megazord will be unformable. He encounters and defeats Andros and his teammates but they manage to rescue the Shuttle before the Dark Fortress annihilates the silo so Astronema enlarges Ecliptor with the Sattelasers. The Space Rangers form the Astro Megazord and, although Ecliptor initially has the upper-hand, they swiftly turn the scales and defeat him with the Astro Megazord Saber. Somehow, despite being completely obliterated by the explosion, Ecliptor survives unscathed and joins back up with Astronema as her second in command and helps her repeatedly try to destroy the Space Rangers to no avail.

When Darkonda arrives on Earth and presents himself as a new general, Ecliptor completely distrusts him as Darkonda is a notoriously treacherous and self-serving being which leads to a rivalry and many fights between the two. At one point, Darkonda captures and forcibly fuses with Ecliptor; becoming Darkliptor and later being badly injured by the Astro Delta Megazord's Flying Power Punch. Eventually, after Astronema realises who she is, Ecliptor's love for her leads to him betraying Dark Specter which allows her to escape at the cost of Ecliptor being beaten down and captured by the Quantrons. Despite resisting, the badly injured Ecliptor is helpless and swiftly lobotomised by Darkonda under Dark Specter's orders; erasing much of his personality and leaving an almost mindlessly obedient robot. Ecliptor later captures Astronema when she infiltrates the Dark Fortress to try and destroy a meteor headed for Earth and watches her lobotimisation. Unknown to Dark Specter however, the brainwashing makes Astronema even more evil so she wants to overthrow him and rule instead with Ecliptor obeying her with complete obedience. He helps her to execute many schemes which include the Psycho Rangers (who later betray Astronema and beat down Ecliptor) and the Secret City but all of them become failures.

At the end of 1998, Dark Specter initiates his massive invasion of the universe with Ecliptor and Astronema launching the massive Quantron invasion of Earth. Although Ecliptor witnesses Darkonda's betrayal and murder of Dark Specter, and accompanys Astronema to Earth when she demands that they surrender the Space Rangers, Ecliptor does not play a major part in the invasion until Andros infiltrates the Dark Fortress to save Zordon and tricks him and the Quantrons out of the command chamber. When he finally breaks back inside, he finds Astronema supposedly dead after being struck down by Andros which manages to break his re-programming as he flies into a rage. He attacks Andros but is struck down and cripplingly injured before Andros destroys Zordon's tube with his Spiral Saber which releases a powerful wave of good energy. Unable to do anything else, Ecliptor shields Astronema with his body but is turned to dust by Zordon's Energy Wave and becomes its first victim.

Why it didn't spare him when it did others like Rita Repulsa, Lord Zedd and Divatox is unknown but he likely intended to attack Andros no matter what. Despite Ecliptor's death, his best efforts to save Astronema prove to be successful in the end. Astronema is purified by Zordon energy wave, and returned back to her heroic self "Karone", which brings her to the side of good once and for all.

Lost Galaxy[]

Due to being dead for over a year, Ecliptor does not physically appear but is recalled by Karone when she fights a projection of her former self. The illusionary Astronema forces her to confront her past which includes working with Ecliptor but she overcomes her past after some encouragement.

Dino Fury[]

Twenty four years after his death, Ecliptor is seen again when Solon tells Ollie Akana about how Zordon only managed to defeat Lord Zedd using his Energy Wave and the Legendary Ranger Database shows Ecliptor being vaporised.

Personality[]

Unlike many other villains in Power Rangers, such as his rival Darkonda, Ecliptor was a complex being with many different facets to his personality. Initially, he appeared to merely be another brutalistic if somewhat honourable thug of a general, loyal only to Astronema and Dark Specter but he showed a more fatherly attitude on a regular basis and clearly cared for Astronema. He cared about her enough that he would fiercely protect her interests even if it put his life at risk (usually putting him against the extremely treacherous and manipulative Darkonda) and loved her so much that he later sacrificed himself to give her a chance at redemption arc in the episode "The Rangers' Leap of Faith."

After being lobotomised by Darkonda, most of his personality was erased beyond mindless minions to Astronema although his loyalty to a fault remained; willingly to help her betray Dark Specter and exiled Darkonda without question. Despite these, when he saw Astronema supposedly dead in the Dark Fortress, he broke free of his re-programming and tried to murder Andros which led to his death.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Power: As Astronema's second in command, Ecliptor was immensely powerful; stronger than Goldar, Rito, Rygog, and Elgar as well as on par with Darkonda and much more powerful than the Space Rangers.
  • Strength: Ecliptor could knock down the Space Rangers with single hits, pick up and throw Andros with one hand and knock back the Astro Megazord with single slashes.
  • Durability: Ecliptor was stabbed in the shoulder by the Spiral Saber, slammed into a wall, struck by the Astro Megazord Saber finisher, exploding, many hits from the Quantrons and the Spiral Saber energy slash finisher but survived them all. It took being completely disintegrated by Zordon's Energy Wave to destroy him.
  • Teleportation: Ecliptor could teleport to any location at will in a flash of green lightning.
    • Energyportation: During his first appearance, Ecliptor could teleport to turning on the spot before turning into a black energy streak that would then vanish into the air.
  • Eye Blasts: Ecliptor's signature ability where he could fire devastatingly powerful green lasers from his eyes that could cause large explosions and take down all five Space Rangers.
    • Cyber Shadow Generation: Ecliptor could generate a large blue projection of himself by shooting blue lasers from his eyes. It could project even more powerful versions of his eye beams.
  • Tractor Beams: Ecliptor could fire red lightning from both shoulders that could wrap around his enemies, lift them into the air and drag them around, and throw them down.

Arsenal[]

  • Sword: Ecliptor's weapon of choice was a razor-sharp green and black sword that he could use in combat.

Quotes[]

Hm, the Power Rangers. What took you so long? Hm hm hm.
~ Ecliptor's first words when meeting the Space Rangers for the first time outside the NASADA Mega Shuttle silo.
That was good but not good enough.
~ Ecliptor after being knocked out of his mirror attack and his final words before his apparent death.
Red Ranger, I'll see that you pay for this if it's the last thing I ever do.
~ Ecliptor after Andros seemingly killed Astronema and his last words.

Trivia[]

  • Although Ecliptor's backstory was never fully explained, then head writer Judd Lynn wanted him to be a creation of former Blue Ranger Billy Cranston that turned evil and led to him becoming the Phantom Ranger. Due to David Yost's very negative departure from the show, this idea never went anywhere.
  • The fight against giant Ecliptor from "Never Stop Searching" came from the same episode as the Zord fight from "Save Our Ship", occurring first.
    • This was why the small sized Rangers seemed to easily make him retreat in the former episode despite his power (he was only winded in Megaranger) and why the shot of the Sattelasers enlarging him was clearly one of him already giant. In Megaranger, he could grow to giant size unaided.
  • Ecliptor first form and final form suits weren't adapted for Power Rangers In Space, thus only exists as super sentai footage exclusives.
  • Despite being similar to his Super Sentai counterpart, its worth noting his paternal instinct was mirror to Dr Hinelar and not Yugande.
  • Ecliptor is one of villains who didn't die for good in first time, instead returning without explanation. Others would be; Elgar, Deviot, White Dino Ranger Clone, and Zeltrax.
