The Economic League are the main antagonists of the BBC drama Peaky Blinders. They are a far-right branch of Government with most of the Police and Judges in their control and commit crimes such as murder and blackmail to achieve their goals.
History[]
The Economic League is first alluded to in season 2, When Winston Churchill saves Thomas Shelby from assassination and has him informed that he has a job for him. In season 3, Tommy is made to provide weaponry for the surviving members of The Russian Royal family to aid in their campaign against the Bolsheviks. The organization’s representatives, Father John Hughes and Patrick Jarvis repeatedly force Tommy into meetings, having him arrested on one occasion and threatening his son, Charlie by placing a message in his crib, showing they can reach him at any time.
Tommy, Hughes, Jarvis, and the Romanovs then meet to plan a robbery of a soviet train. However, Tommy deviates from the plan to ensure his own safety, he later informs the Romanovs that Hughes is passing information to the Soviet Embassy. When they give permission to kill him, this attempt fails, and Tommy is brutally questioned by Hughes and Jarvis. They confess to their treachery, but force him to claim to the Romanovs that he was wrong and apologies in front of them.
Afterwards, Tommy warns The Soviet Embassy, who know of the robbery, that this is what The League wants, as when soldiers are sent to protect the train, British citizens will die and force the government to break off all diplomatic relations with Russia. When The Economic League learns of Tommy’s betrayal, they kidnap his son. Hughes meets with Tommy and informs him he will die unless Tommy blows up the train himself, killing at least 6 people, Tommy goes ahead with this, but also informs his people to find Charlie. While he is saved and Hughes is killed, they are too late to inform Arthur and John, who blow up the train. Afterwards, they burn all documents they were supposed to plant that would implicate the Soviet Union.
In the aftermath, The Economic League have Arthur, John, Polly, and Michael arrested and set for hanging as revenge. However, on the day of their execution, Tommy presents papers to a government official, implicating King George V in the conspiracy. He promises to burn the papers if he and his family are pardoned, this is successful, with everyone receiving their pardon seconds before their hanging.
In season 5, Tommy asks Colonel Ben Younger to investigate Oswald Mosley, who is fast approaching a fascist policy. His investigations are unpopular within the British government, including the Economic league, which he refers to as Section D. Afterwards, he is killed by a car bomb, which is covered up as an IRA assassination of a British Army minister.
