~ Dillinger to Flynn. |
Edward "Ed" Dillinger Sr. is the overarching antagonist of the 1982 film Tron.
He was portrayed by David Warner, who also played the Master Control Program and Sark in the same film. He also played The Evil Genius in the 1981 film Time Bandits and Ra's al Ghul in the DC Animated Universe.
Role in the film
He was the president of ENCOM at the outset of the story. He only cares about his position and is determined to keep it. He also created the Master Control Program in order to ensure that he maintains control of ENCOM. His ultimate goal is to use the programming abilities of Space Paranoids (which was created by his former employee Kevin Flynn) to get rich, even firing Flynn from ENCOM when the latter objected to the thefts. However, Dillinger starts to have second thoughts when the MCP plans to control all of the world's systems and even blackmailed him into helping it, otherwise his thefts would be exposed.
Eventually, the MCP was de-rezzed by Kevin, who finally obtained evidence of Dillinger's thefts of the game. As soon as Dillinger returns to his office, he learns of the MCP's de-resolution and the evidence being shown in every computer of the entire ENCOM. Realizing now that he has been exposed, Dillinger drops down in his chair in defeat, and he presumably goes to jail for his crimes while Flynn takes over as the new president of ENCOM.
Trivia
- He had a son named Edward Dillinger, Jr., who is currently working at ENCOM in Tron Legacy.
