White male. Forties. Suave, confident. More Bundy than Dahmer. He knows how to use his looks and his charisma. On men and women. Uh, he's wealthy, well-connected, but he didn't start that way, he grew up poor. It's a far cry from the fancy life that he lives now. Let's say Deep South, uh, Midwest, maybe. The man we're after is exceptionally brilliant. But his intellect masks a deep insecurity. He worships other, more impressive serial killers. Desperately wants to be a part of their club. I know him better than he knows himself. He wants to be a legend, but all he's doing is making pale copies of the real ones. He even made a scrapbook, like a little groupie. We gave him a nickname. "The Fanboy."
~ Cross' profile of Ramsey

Ed Ramsey, also known as The Fanboy Killer, is the main antagonist in the first season of the television series Cross.

Ramsey was a serial killer in DC who altered the appearance of his victims to match that of prolific serial killers. His methods and signature of forcing his victims to become the physical embodiments of serial killers, including reliving their last day of execution, made him greatly unique. He idolized the serial killers he was recreating and documented his efforts in a scrapbook that was his most treasured possession.

He was portrayed by Ryan Eggold, who also portrayed Walter Breachway in BlacKkKlansman, and portrayed by Matthew J. Lindblom as a younger Ramsey.

Biography[]

Ed was born in Indiana to a single mother and was her whole world until the birth of his sister. Ed became jealous of his sister and felt he lacked control in his life. He told his mother that he wanted to be an only child - and would have done anything to get that back again. His sisters death was ruled accidental caused by carbon monoxide poisoning, though she was Ed's first human victim. He was also obsessed with photography and would document his surroundings - and people - in surprising detail.

After the death of Ed's sister, Eleanor distanced herself from Ed and cut him out emotionally, so Ed lashed out to get her attention. He mutilated birds in the neighborhood and kept their feet as trophies under his bed. Their corpses were littered around town which caught the locals attention as the corpses became chronic enough to be an issue. He took a break from killing birds after his tonsillectomy. His childhood neighbor Dex surprised him with soup and saw the birds feet laid out on the bed like baseball cards. Dex didn't tell anyone about what he saw because some of the photos Ed had taken were of Dex's father having an affair. Eventually, the bird killings stopped, so Dex believed Ed had grown out of the phase, unaware that Ed had graduated to larger animals and more vivid fantasies of murder.

As Ed grew, as did his fascination with murder, serial killers, violence, and fame. He graduated high school and moved to Philly, though he tried to keep in touch with Dex by sending him detailed letters about his life, though Dex never responded. Ed attended concerts where the lead singer White Mike performed fake sacrificial killings. Ed thought White Mike shared his impulse to kill and tricked him into killing one of their friends, Rodney, as Ed videotaped everything. White Mike was repulsed by the ordeal and cut contact with Ed, who later mailed him the knife they used to kill their friend. Around this time is when Ed stopped talking to his mother and began to tell people she was dead, making her a lynchpin in his personal mythology. He couldn't leave Eleanor behind so he symbolically killed her in his mind so he would be free to become the man he wanted to be.

Ed wanted more power and prestige but lacked the educational and financial background to otherwise climb the social or political hierarchy. Part of his elaborate story to present himself in a specific image was by lying that his mother had died. He lied about attending Wharton School of Business so he could intern for influential people. When his secrets were discovered, he used the secrets of the upper-echelon to blackmail his way into power.

Once Ed was in a position of power and surrounded by like-minded individuals, he began to enact his lifelong desire to join his idols in serial killer infamy. His particular signature was abducting people and using various means to make his victims look like other renowned serial killers before murdering them. His efforts went beyond superficial, as he forced his victims to recreate the killers final moments before they were executed. He fed them same meals as the killers they now resembled. Ed focused on abducting low-profile individuals who wouldn't otherwise be missed by society, which was how he went undetected by police for so long. However, killing alone wasn't enough for Ed, who craved attention and credit. He founded a live-steaming platform on the dark web where he shared his darkest fantasies with others. He wore a mask to conceal his identity.

Ed's circle of allies grew with his exploits, including having hired former DCPD detective Bobby Trey Abellard to resolve situations for him using illegal means. Bobby cleaned up after Ed whenever he made mistakes. Ed's plastic surgeon Dr. Daine shared his twisted nature and would help him alter his victims appearances either surgically or by supplying the materials he needed to fulfill his vision.

Personality[]

Ed Ramsey is a born psychopath who is incapable of true human connection, emotions, and morals. He craved attention as a child and when he had to share the attention with his younger sister, and wanted nothing more than to be an only child again. He was jealous of the attention she was getting and held a general disliking for others. He lashed out by killing her via carbon monoxide poisoning. As a result of her death, Ed's mother Eleanor became emotionally distant from him to protect herself from the loss of her daughter, a diagnosis Cross explained as "pathological bereavement". He cited it was devastating for the child left behind, unaware at the time that Ed had killed his sister. Cross believed that Ed told Eleanor about his mutilation of birds in the neighborhood to seek her attention, but Ed never did, he only expressed his desire to be an only child.

His mutilation of animals from a young age demonstrated a callous disregard and complete lack of empathy for living beings. This progressed into full-blown sadism as he fantasized about murdering people. His viewed the serial killers he obsessed over as artists that he wanted to celebrate. He envied them and craved their fame. As such, he turned his victims into living reenactments of infamous serial killers, perfectly recreating every detail of their lives from physical appearance, their last meals, and the conditions in which they were killed. He tortured his victims endlessly to achieve these goals, becoming incredibly hostile and abusive when they acted out against him. He viewed his actions not as senseless murders, but that his victims were art pieces in his final showcase. As such, he cherished his scrapbook where he documented all his "transformations".

Ed concealed his psychoses behind layers of a perfectly crafted facade as a suave, intellectual, and charming businessman who wanted to help others. His backstory of a dead family, combined with his philanthropic work, lent to the grace others gave him. He became incredibly wealthy through calculated means of exploitation and blackmail against those he sought to diminish. His quest for like-minded individuals was successful, as he crafted a web of helpers and workers that would do anything to help him achieve his "artistic" mission.
