NOTE: For the sake of this wiki, this page is mainly about the more antagonistic counterpart of Edelgard as her Flame Emperor persona and as the Empress of Adrestia in other routes aside from the Crimson Flower and Scarlet Blaze routes.

Villain Overview

Halt. You're having a bit too much fun.
~ The Flame Emperor stopping Death Knight, and their most famous quote.
People believe that Crests are blessings from the Goddess, that they're necessary to maintain order in Fodlan. But the people are wrong. Crests are to blame for this brutal, irrational world we live in.
~ Edelgard von Hresvelg speaking with Byleth.
Must you continue to reconquer? Continue to kill in retaliation?
~ Edelgard rebuking Dimitri and his grudge against her, probably her most infamous quote.
These fools are caught up in the sacrifices that are at hand and can't see the future ramifications at stake. We must bury them! We must trample the past underfoot and move on to a brighter tomorrow!
~ Hegemon Edelgard

Princess Edelgard von Hresvelg, also known as the Flame Emperor, is the secondary antagonist within the Fódlan Saga of the Fire Emblem franchise.

She is the princess and heir of the Adrestian Empire, the house leader of the Black Eagles, and the leader of the Flame Emperor Army. She works reluctantly with Those Who Slither in the Dark against the Church of Seiros, but is shown to have her own agenda of wanting to demolish the Crest System and restore peace in the land of Fódlan. She is also the stepsister and arch-rival of Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd, as well as the arch-rival of Seiros/Rhea.

In Three Houses, she is the main antagonist in the Azure Moon route, and the secondary antagonist in both the Verdant Wind and Silver Snow routes. In Three Hopes, she is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Thales) in the Azure Gleam route, and the secondary antagonist of the first half of the Golden Wildfire route.

In Japanese, she is voiced by Ai Kakuma. In English, she was voiced by Cristina Valenzuela in the E3 2018 trailer and Tara Platt in the released game and all other appearances.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Edelgard has pale skin, purple eyes, and long hair with ties to the side. Her hair was originally brown during her childhood, but due to her Crest experiments, it was turned to white. She wears a red cape, the color of her house, on the side of her uniform.

In her Flame Emperor persona, she wears black armor, a black robed surplice, red-feathered shoulder pauldrons, a helmet with a large red plume, and a white and red mask that conceals her identity and distorts her voice.

In the five-year timeskip, she puts her hair up in Odango buns and wears a red ballgown. In Three Hopes, Edelgard wears a red-grey armor, a red cape, and a yellow crown.

Personality[]

Edelgard is a calm, dignified, high-minded and solemn person who coolly evaluates her surroundings and those around her before she acts. However, Edelgard will allow herself to let loose or act casually occasionally, and yet she will only reveal this side of herself to her most trusted friends.

Because of her childhood tragedy of losing family, Edelgard despises Crests and the Church of Seiros, thus becoming an extremist secretly planning to remove the system run by the church. She hates any idea of relying on the Crest's power to reach their goal. Once she is revealed to be none other than the Flame Emperor, Edelgard's secret side is revealed to be a ruthless person who will backstab and manipulate allies in order to reach her goal, even though she honestly tries to bring peace upon her land and end the corruption. She also shows great contempt for how far Those Who Slither in the Dark would go, not afraid of voicing out all her disgust right in front of them.

The post-timeskip Edelgard's personality fully depends on the player's choice. In the Black Eagles route, because of Byleth's continuous support and teaching, Edelgard begins to see the error of her ways and becomes much less deranged than in other routes. She also manages to redeem herself from her villainous path, mourns the death of her sacrificed comrades, feels sorry for her former classmates (if they become enemies on the battlefield) and Dimitri, and tries to bring genuine goodness upon Fodlan that eventually results in a prosperous golden age.

In other three routes, without Byleth on her side to guide her, Edelgard eventually becomes a full-fledged tyrant, planning to conquer every enemy faction no matter what the cost. This reaches an extreme in the Blue Lions route, where she takes a more monstrous form to fight Dimitri, causing him to lament what she has become and scornfully call her pathetic.

In the other routes, however, Edelgard still shows some empathy in spite of becoming an unfettered extremist. In both the Church and Golden Deer routes, she laments not being able to stand side by side with Byleth. Her vassal Hubert also takes steps to ensure that Byleth can defeat Those who Slither in the Dark in case she is defeated, presumably on her orders.

In the Blue Lions route, it is speculated that Edelgard's failed stabbing of Dimitri is actually an act to goad him into killing her, since she knows she will die soon because of the Crest's side effect, making her death even more tragic. Another interpretation of this scene posits that she genuinely believed that Dimitri was worthy of leading Fodlan into a new golden age and considered her death necessary to ensure it could happen.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Edelgard both appears as a background character in the Garreg Mach Monastery stage and as one of Byleth's DLC spirits. She starts out as a Advanced level spirit, under the Attack type. In her spirit battle, she is represented by a super-armored Byleth in their alt themed around her. She is fought on Castle Siege, with a lava hazard added. The Edelgard spirit is enhanceable to her timeskip design, a Ace level spirit with the Armor Knight effect.

Quotes[]

Flame Emperor

You are the one person I did not wish to make an enemy of...
~ Flame Emperor when fighting Byleth, a bit of foreshadowing to their true identity.
You wish to interfere? Then your life is forfeit.
~ Flame Emperor.
They must be allowed to keep it, for now. I do not have enough information about the professor to act.
~ The Flame Emperor talking about Byleth.

Edelgard

Yes. In fact, I gave the order. I am the Flame Emperor.
~ Edelgard admitting she is the Flame Emperor (Black Eagles route only).
The leaders of the church have misused its creed to fulfill their true desire—to rule the world. They have fooled the people of Fódlan. Long ago, they divided the Empire to create a Kingdom, and then...divided that Kingdom to create an Alliance. They did all of this to make the masses bicker amongst themselves. They caused instability in order to reinforce their own authority. They gathered gold and lived in extravagance. How? By preying on the devotion of those who wished for the goddess's salvation. Those corrupt hypocrites cannot lead Fódlan to true peace. Their foul belief system must be torn asunder so that true wisdom may finally prevail! And so, I have decided... by order of the Adrestian Emperor, Edelgard von Hresvelg... The Empire hereby declares war on the Church of Seiros!
~ Edelgard's speech to the Imperial soldiers.
I wish you were someone whose heart could be swayed by my words and deeds. If it were so, I would have done anything to make you my ally...
~ Edelgard vs. Byleth in Garreg Mach.
Edelgard: So, House Nuvelle has chosen the path that will lead to its ultimate demise. How pitiable.
Constance: As you say, I have forfeited my claim on being a noble of the Empire. That is why you must permit me to challenge you in combat, that I may establish a new House Nuvelle.
Edelgard: As you wish. Let's see if your resolve is a match for my own.
~ Edelgard vs. Constance in Garreg Mach.
Even though our swords may cross as they do now...there's no denying that our chosen paths never will. Good-bye, my teacher. When next we meet, one of us will breathe their last.
~ Edelgard to Byleth in their reunion in Silver Snow/Church route.
Edelgard: Lysithea... You and I are so alike. We could have walked the same path.
Lysithea: We're alike?! You don't mean to tell me... It can't be!
Edelgard: Yet now, we are at a crossroads. There's no turning back. Must we fight each other for the things we believe in?
Lysithea: That's exactly what's going to happen. And I will defeat you, Edelgard!
~ Edelgard remarking how similar she and Lysithea are during their battle.
If you strike me down, they will return. I cannot permit what you desire. You are a child of the goddess. You must not be allowed power over the people!
~ Edelgard fighting Seteth/Flayn.
Ugh... This pain is nothing... compared to what I have already suffered...
~ Edelgard during her transformation into her Hegemon Husk form (Azure Moon only).

Hegemon Edelgard

They are here... But my progress cannot be stopped, no matter how many people try. The war's end will spell destruction for one of us. There can only be one ruler of the world...
~ Edelgard, after she transformed into her Hegemon Husk form.
Facing you... I grow weak...
~ Hegemon Edelgard fighting Byleth.

Trivia[]

  • "Edelgarde" is a female German name meaning "noble protector", while Hræsvelgr is a figure from Norse mythology who is a giant that takes the form of an eagle.
  • The Japanese name of Edelgard's Flame Emperor identity is called Entei. The Entei (炎帝), or Yándì, was an old title of emperor from prehistoric China, who supposedly passed down his title of ruler of the tribes to other people long before the Dynastic era.
  • Throughout the entire game, at least one of the duo of Edelgard and Dimitri will die if the chosen route is not their own. It is impossible to make both of them survive. This contradicts Claude, who can be spared and thus survive in all of the routes including those who are not his own.
  • There are certain elements that foreshadow that Edelgard is the Flame Emperor. For example, both Edelgard and the Flame Emperor wear red, and Edelgard holds the title of the future Empress of Adrestian Empire. Edelgard is also absent when Byleth faces the Flame Emperor face to face, and appears once more as soon as the confrontation is over. In addition, Edelgard is skilled in using axes, and her axe used in Fire Emblem Heroes is the same axe used by the Flame Emperor. Additionally, if Edelgard is chosen to fight the Death Knight in any map he is in, the dialogue shows them questioning each other regarding their being there in a manner that heavily implies that they know each other.
  • In the Black Eagles route, Edelgard can be romanced by either gender of Byleth once they reach S-Support, making her one of the few bisexual playable characters in the game.
  • Initially in the English version, Edelgard was voiced by Cristina Valenzuela in the original E3 2018 trailer for Three Houses, whom she shares with Tatiana from Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, as well as the Fire Emblem Heroes appearances of Lachesis and Athena.
  • In the Crimson Flower route only, Edelgard becomes the first playable character capable to earn an Emperor class in the main works of Fire Emblem series. Previous Emperor characters are all non-playable bosses in their originated works, including those who only make their playable debut in Fire Emblem Heroes, which is a spin-off.
    • Edelgard, as the Adestrian Emperor post-timeskip, is also the first female character who fits the Rudolf Archetype (tyrannical emperor) of Fire Emblem villains, and is also the first (former) Martial Lord character who becomes this.
  • In "All In", the penultimate episode of Amphibia, an imaginary version of Sasha Waybright in Marcy Wu's fantasy dresses up in Edelgard's Post-Timeskip outfit.
  • In Fire Emblem: Engage, Byleth's paralogue chapter titled "The Instructor" recreates "Throne of Knowledge", the battle against the Flame Emperor in the Holy Tomb where they are revealed to be Edelgard. However, she was absent, Byleth takes the Flame Emperor's place as boss. The paralogue even contained a side mission where the player protects crystals, in place of Crest Stones, for extra rewards.
