~ Edgar arguing with John, ironically his last words before John has him killed. |
Edgar Janssen is one of the overarching antagonists (alongside John Bailey-Brown and Devlin) of Series 1 of the Apple TV+ British drama-thriller miniseries Hijack.
Edgar is the co-leader of the Cheapside Firm, alongside his partner John-Bailey Brown, which is an international crime syndicate based in London. He also sends hitmen to kill not only those who cause trouble in their plans, but also their families, including those of their own employees. When the syndicate is busted and the 2 men are imprisoned, Edgar has Stuart Atterton and his accomplices hijack Flight KA29 to blackmail the U.K government into releasing them.
He was portrayed by Simon McBurney, who also played Atlee in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, Kreacher in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1, and Oliver Cromwell in Wolfwalkers.
Personality[]
Even before his onscreen appearance, Edgar is described as a powerful and ruthless crime lord. His co-management of the Cheapside Firm, alongside John's, has made them fearful in the U.K and the criminal underworld. Even Stuart and his accomplices are afraid of them. Once he appears onscreen, we see even more of Edgar's ruthlessness. From the minute he is released from prison, Edgar is shown to be both ruthless and uncompromising, as he threatens the police to not follow him, otherwise he will have more passengers killed on flight KA29. When he sees Daniel following him, he calls him to let him know that his actions have resulted in the death of a passenger. Edgar then sends a photo of the dead body to Daniel, showing that he means business.
Edgar is also shown to be highly intelligent and manipulative, as he planned a route that he and John would take once they were released. While he was wrong to assume that the police purposely blocked a road, he quicky deduced that they were stalling them so the plane could land, ensuring the safety of the passengers. When Edgar and John go to an airfield, military personnel come out to confront and attack them. However, it is revealed that they are look-alike decoys, and that the real Edgar & John change vehicles in the woods. He then sends a message to woman on the plane, Amanda, saying "NOW'. Upon recieving it, she takes a gun, shoots and kills Captain Robin Allen, and shuts the cockpit from the inside. It can be presumed she was a sleeper agent for Edgar in case the hijacking went awry, as not even Stuart and his terrorists were aware of her.
Despite being a co-leader of the Cheapside Firm alongside John, they do not get along. John is clearly the more sensible of the two, as he doesn't want the plane to crash, and isn't nearly as greedy as Edgar, as John wants to close the trade ASAP and give Amanda an answer via text so she can land the plane. However, Edgar refuses, and protests that they lay low until the plane crashes, and rack up as much money as they can. Ironically, Edgar's greediness is what gets him killed by John.
Biography[]
Past[]
Very little is known about Edgar's past. However, we learn that Edgar & his colleague, John Bailey-Brown, established the Cheapside Firm at some point. They ran rings of drug trafficking, prostitution, and illegal arms dealing. Edgar also sends hitmen to kill not only those who cause even the slightest bit of trouble in his plans, but also their families, including those of their own employees. Because of this, Edgar is feared in Britain and it's criminal society. At some point, Edgar even had Stuart and Lewis' father, Peter, executed, because Peter grassed on the syndicate. A while after, the Firm was busted and Edgar and John were given a sentence of 35 years. As such, Edgar had Stuart and a few more of his agents hijack flight KA29 to demand the release of him and John.
Hijack[]
Comply Slowly[]
Edgar and John are released from their sentences as per the hijacker’s demands. Janssen makes it abundantly clear from the get-go, if anyone tries to follow them or stop them, then innocent passengers will be killed. Of course, the UK government ordered Daniel and his team to follow after the criminals regardless of these threats. They also track them via a hacked GPS and then follow them from the air with a drone, as they want to save the passengers and thwart the criminals' plans. Daniel and his team follow from a safe distance, observing the criminals as they drive along their pre-planned route.
The criminals stop suddenly on a bridge. Janssen then confronts Daniel, reiterating their rules. Because they have broken their agreement, a passenger must now die. Janssen sends Stuart a message, asking for one of the passengers to be killed and then a photograph to be sent as proof. Stuart prepares to kill the nearest flight attendant, before Sam suggests him to send a photo of the passenger he already killed. Stuart does, and sends the photo to Edgar. Daniel and his team continue to follow, even after Janssen’s threats. Janssen then sends them the photograph of Sheena to prove that they aren’t messing about. The photo is quickly passed on to the government. They now realize that their actions do lead to these horrific consequences.
Janssen’s journey is then interrupted by a road blockage. He suspects that the police are purposely delaying his route and tells David to clear it up unless he wants another passenger to die. While David protests that they didn't set up the road block, Janssen retaliates, and orders another killing. The criminals then change tactics and continue off-road toward their destination. It becomes clear that they are heading to an airfield with plans of escaping the country. Military personnel are positioned at the Fernhill airfield. The soldiers are ordered to attack and confront the criminals. But the criminals have used lookalikes as a decoy. They are actually elsewhere, changing into a different vehicle. Janssen then sends another cryptic message from his phone. This message was presumably sent to Stuart, as well as Amanda, a passenger who reveals her true nature by taking a gun, killing Captain Robin Allen, and taking control of the cockpit. It is presumed she is also an agent under Edgar.
Brace Brace Brace[]
Edgar is seen with John at a shack. Edgar is watching the share price of Kingdom Airlines drop, while John is insisting they go and update Amanda. However, Edgar is insistent on getting his money, and insults John to not go soft on him now. However, John, tired of Edgar, has is henchman at the shack help him leave to meet Devlin early. John's subordinate then shoots Edgar in the head, leaving his dead corpse at the shack while he and John drive away, telling Devlin to make the trade.
Trivia[]
- Despite being one of the two leaders of the CF, alongside John, Edgar definitely seemed to be the more powerful of the duo. He seemed to be more feared among the hijackers, with Jamie saying "Edgar asks, Edgar gets."
