The whole narrative makes it clear Edgar is a massive hypocrite who uses his authority and power to satisfy his own enjoyment of glory and hatred of criminals, he does make some good points here and there but the story outright by the end he just in it for himself, and him being honorable is made completely moot by betraying John after he did literally Edgar wanted.
